The 1968 Camaro Z28 Convertible was a 1 off production car built for GM Executive Pete Estes. This car was pulled from the regular Camaro assembly line and converted to a Z28 to try and impress Pete Estes who controlled the purse strings for Chevy's racing program. The car was supposed to impress Pete to give the race guys the funds for their Trans-Am program. Apparently, it worked because the car survived and had been restored. Since the timing of this footage, the car has gone back underground. This might be the only actual footage of the car.

in 1968 and 69, I was working at a Chevy Dealer near my home, as a "Wash Boy / Car Porter". This was an after school job, that went full time in the Summer. I had saved all my money from that job, and in June of 1969, I placed an Order for a 1969 Camaro with 396ci, 375hp, Convertible, SS but also all of the RS Options like Hide Away Headlights and additional Gauges on the Console, called the Instrument Package. Color was "Hugger Orange" with Black Stripes, Black Top and Black Interior. The Salesman was laughing at me, saying things like "Dream On Wash Boy"... until I tossed Five Grand Cash on his desk... He nearly Crapped his Pants! The car came to a total of $4679.00 which was the most expensive Camaro they had sold there, and only like $600.00 less than a Corvette. A couple weeks later there was a problem, because they did not want to build this car as a 4-Speed Convertible... but the Owner of the Dealership stepped in, and told them it was for his Son, who had just come back from the War... a Couple weeks later the car showed up. Being the "Wash Boy"... I asked to have the afternoon off, to spend the next 6 hours Detailing the Car and giving it a Triple Undercoat on the sly... (only paid them for One Coat.) About a half hour before closing, I was about to drive the car up front, and lock up the bays. All of the other kids that worked there were Amazed by this car, and all day kept saying things like... "Wonder Who got This Car." I never told them... until I was driving it our the back door. Just before I did a Screaming Burn Out, I yelled... This Baby is Mine!! ... Save Your Money! ... That was a Very Good Day... :>)

I am from Southwestern Ohio and grew up there. I went to Cincinnati Technical College, which I studied automotive service management. In 1987 we had a class trip to the Norwood plant about a year before they closed the plant. Sadly, I hate to say it, but the employees at the time had themselves partly to blame for the closing of the plant. They had up to 40 percent absenteeism on a daily basis and there was a lot of drug dealing and drug abuse in the plant. When we took a tour of the factory I could plainly see the poor quality control there that was going on. I had several people over the years tell me if you wanted a decently built Camaro or Firebird that you had to get one that was built at the Van Nuys factory. That's exactly why that plant wasn't shut down for at least a year or two later and production was transferred to Ontario Canada. It was truly sad because it about ruined the economy of Norwood Ohio after it was shut down.

Biggest mistake I ever made when buying a muscle car.my buddy could rev the motor on Z28 to 5000 rpms and drop the clutch,it was better then sex, laid back in the seat feeling the G force.my other friend bought a 67 sting ray corvette with the 427 four speed, came by house with 4 miles on the speedometer on it. He said hop in let’s go for a ride. He floor it and drop the clutch, and it was faster then the Z28. Only if we could go back to the future!

Sorry to disagree but it was ordered through the COPO process and was built as a Z on the assembly line. That makes it as much a production car any COPO (not just the Camaros). The special options that were available with Zs but had to be installed by the customer (the cross ram, headers etc) were installed in the engineering center. Unlike the BOSS 429 it was not sent out to another company to be built.

I can't say I'm a fan of Mecum or Barret-Jackson. Model A's, tri 5 Chevys, 60s muscle cars in general have greatly declined in value with things like model A or roadsters declining the most due to age of the fans. There's something of a hard deck they don't really fall through. Even what they call square body 73-87 Chevy trucks had the bottom drop out. The key is to live forever. When the Buick grand national came out and you could pick one up for $2500 I told him to buy one . He didn’t and the rest is history. Wow! What a beautiful car that Z28 is. Originally I thought that the exterior was black, but when I saw it outside, I could see it was actually dark green. A beautiful color combination. Another thing that I thought was a little odd, was the fact that the interior was white. I had always thought that the interior was supposed to be the same color as the top. And the number of options on this car, was just incredible. That Pete Estes was 1 lucky guy. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it.

COPO was not a production division. It was a paperwork mill that was used to specify configurations not available through the RPO process and included everything from taxis to ZL1s. The car was built as a Z on the assembly line. Special optional parts available with any Z but customer or dealer installed (cross ram, headers and such) were installed by Chevrolet engineering because there was no dealer.

COPO: Central Office PRODUCTION Order If it was a COPO car, ordered through the COPO program, with COPO paperwork, then technically it would be a production car. If Estes didn't go through the official order program with official paperwork, then no, it's not production. The difference is whether or not anyone else could order a car this way, regardless of whether or not anyone else did or not.

Very interesting and well done video! Brings back memories of a good friend I had for many years out in California who purchased and sold a 1964 Ford Galaxy 500 XL Fastback with a 427 engine. What was unique about this vehicle was that it was ordered with only one Holly four barrel carb rather then the two that was common. Turns out it was one of only twelve that were produced in model year 1964! I saw a Hot Rod magazine with a picture on the front cover of one and stating that if you had one of these in the 1980’s it was worth around 85k! He paid $3500. lol

The reason no Z28 convertibles….. without the roof as structure, the unibody could not take the twist. My 69 Z and most others have small cracks in the corner of the 1/4 window sheet metal, (not only Z28s but also other high HP Camaro). They can twist so bad that when you shift at about 7000rpm the shifter can neutral lock until the body untwists.

My dad owned one that he drove, raced, ect (heard a lot of stories about that car). According to him it had an all aluminum body, 427 big block, was a beast that he said he raced on the street without being beat except one time. He ended up selling it to a man in Dayton Ohio that garaged it. I am trying to remember everything my dad told me about that car, but he has been deceased for ten years. The car I should have kept was my 69 RS SS with the hidden headlights. It was orange and white with the white interior and a convertible. I found the car on my 17th birthday at some side street car lot and literally sped on home to choked every last cent out of my Piggy bank. About 7 months after I bought the car I could no longer get insurance on it for some reasons I had my parents insurance company, Erie insurance and I received a letter that Erie was no longer insuring my model car. So the car went to my dads house it's been there ever since then in his basement collection. A few times he tried to sell it but everyone around here wanted it for peanuts because it had a little rust on the quarter panels. I guess when my dad passes the car will come back to me anyway. I still don't know if I can get insurance on the car. The rarest part of the car is under the hood is 427 not a 454. I have no idea to this day if that car came with that engine. It does have big block front suspension that was confirmed when my dad had the weakened front springs replaced circa 1988. That was when he would park it on his lawn and tried to sell it. I paid $4,500 for the car and we put over $5,000 in having it painted which we did that ourselves but we had the top replaced the seats we ordered factory style seats for it then my dad got the new carpet new trunk mats then he had it undercoated as well as the door hinges got replaced. We did not find a build sheet in the back seat someone had gotten there before I had the car. My dad did run the vin the car did come with a big block but nobody knew which engine because according to the know it alls the we were told it should have had 396 in it. For all we know the car could be another factory freakenstein.

He added a close ratio 4 speed and 4.88 posi-trac. Hey, Gas was 29 cents a gallon. His car may not have been a one off but I have never seen another one and no where have I ever found that engine listed as a Chevelle option. It was however a Vette and full size Chevy option for that year. Most 396"s were 325, 350 or 375 Horse. I have never seen but one 425 HP in a mid size. The *first split back window* Vette (1963) included the *split ass-cheek seats* on all orders with the Rochester FI 360hp engine to keep your ass planted to the seat as you blasted off at every stop light. I don't care how you word the Google search, you're not going to find a Corvette of ANY vintage with "woody" trim anywhere. They just don't exist. I'll admit that a '56 or '57 might look striking with its 'parabola' in woody trim in place of the usual two-tone. But I can't even imagine anyone back then ordering one that way: it never made any sense and I see no record of Chevrolet ever offering that option on a 'Vette of any vintage. 3.) Understand that the information was relayed thru 2 women whose interest in things automotive is near zero, the kind of person who describes a car by telling you what color it is because they all look alike in their eyes. If the woody existed, I doubt it was a Corvette.

@@paulmahon1613 I forgot to mention that on the '67 427hp, once you hit 4G's super glue who ooze out of the split ass-cheek seats, guaranteeing your ass would stay where it was supposed to. It was the NEW "space-age" seat". Chevrolet discontinued that option (wasn't available in '68) due to personal injuries 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I can remember seeing a prototype 69 and a half Trans Am with a 303 Ram Air engine in the Old Car Auto Trader here in Canada when I was in junior high. Back then very little information was available on the first generation Trans Ams and one with the 303 engine was unheard of. 15 or so years later I came across a Hot Rod Magazine article about the magazine did in fact test a factory prototype 69 and a half 303 Trans Am in eastern Canada. The 303 Trans Am wasn't as particularly quick (low 15 second quarter mile car) but the fact that this 69 and a half Ram Air V 303 Trans Am prototype did exist (and was not a misprint) was something really quite extraordinary to today's Pontiac enthusiasts. Hot Rod Magazine stated the 303 engine needed extremely high RPMs to make power as the prototype first generation Trans Am was originally designed to compete with the Boss 302s and the Z28s 302 on the track but the Trans Am 303 prototype was shelved likely due to production costs and feasibility as GM already had the Z28 302s to run against the Ford's Boss 302s.

It's my understanding that there are only two original 69.5s' (Trans Am) left in the world today...One's somewhere in Japan, Was once owned by late night host Conan O'Brian. Status of second is unknown [] Do you know this to be true or no???....

@@imanonattorneyspokesperson5568 I think there are a few 69.5 T/A running around but with the 303 engine? All I recall was seeing the 69.5 T/A with the 303 in the Old Car Auto Trader back in the early 1980s. I thought the 303 was a misprint because no information about the Pontiac 303 was even known back in the mid 1980s. The guy down East wanted $5000 for the 69.5 T/A back then but we had no way of getting the car back to Saskatchewan even if we did buy the car. I do remember the car being white with two blue strips running down the hood and the larger hood scoops being towards the font nose of the 69.5 T/A. I also did recall seeing a 69 COPO 427 Nova back then for sale in Saskatoon as well. The guy wanted $5000 for the car but we didn't even know what COPO even meant back then. Back in the early 1980s muscle cars were easy to obtain for a few thousand Canadian dollars but things went crazy when Barrette Jackson started to air and Hot Rod restoration TV shows began to air. Yes, the 69.5 T/A I saw in the Old Car Auto Trader did exist and I asked my other brother if he remembered seeing the same car for sale in Ontario (?) and he said he confirmed what I had seen back then as well. At least the article in Hot Rod magazine confirmed what I thought and the 69.5 T/A did exist and a prototype 69.5 T/A with a 303 engine was tested somewhere in Eastern Canada by Hot Rod Magazine. I should have clipped out the article but that was back in the mid 1990s that I read the article on the 69.5 303 T/A prototype road test. From what I do recall is that the 303 engine made most of its power from 6000 rpm to 9000 rpm so the car itself wasn't a quarter mile car but rather made to compete with the BOSS 302 and 302 Z28s on the track which makes sense. Even in the local Saskatchewan Auto Trader parts section, I recall seeing stuff like fiberglass 427 thunderbolt hoods and cross ram 302 Z28 intakes for sale. One of the local welders even managed to pick up a 425 HP 396 (SGI Salvage > Saskatchewan Government Insurance who got all the wrecked cars after an accident) out of a early corvette and used the engine in his welding truck.

I want to argue that the single Pontiac GTO judge wagon is more rare due to GTO production being lower than the Camero and it is indeed on the GTO production list for gm and it's one for the entire GTO production

Weird when I bought my first car, I went to the Chevrolet dealer to 'order' a '74 Nova SS 4spd and I waited on it for weeks before they told me that my car wouldn't be built because they had already began building the redesigned '75s (yuck) I never really understood why they didn't try to find me another SS but the day I was up there getting my deposit back I spotted this used car out front and I asked what is that, and the dealer said that's a '71 Camaro... and I said Wo 😲 and then I drove it and with the white high back bucket seats and the slapstick automatic and a spoiler? WTH (I didn't even care it only had a 200 HP 307 High Performance) it was the coolest thing I had ever seen (other than maybe the vettes or Panteras which were just totally out of my reach at a whopping $10,000 for the Pantera). I was only 19 and I bought that Camaro for only $2500. Like new. Kept it about a year and a half and bought a '74 Z28 Type LT (which was Car of the Year by the way) and it was... It just needed a little tweaking. A DP-Holley 650 and [black] Hooker header side pipes and a 4 spd, 50's on rear and 60's on front and still had to put traction bars on and then boom, mid 12's in the quarter. 💕 It was like the SS I had ordered in '74, only a Camaro (fortunately) instead of a Nova and even though I've always had a little soft spot for Nova's, a stroke of luck finding out about Z's and that was before the T.A. 'invasion' so that style was still pretty rare to see🤙 btw: so being what it was, my [super] Z was frkn stolen and I was 💔

@@davidh6818 well let's see, I got it at Classic Chevrolet in Houston Texas late '75 from same lot I bought my first Camaro) and I was cruising along memorial drive one night and a group of people pulled up next to me honking and waving. The guy said, I know the guy that used to own that car. His dad's a doctor and they rebuilt that whole motor but it's not near as fast as it used to be... so there's another quick little story for you. What else you want to hear? Hey, how bout some race stories... Had a guy pull up to me as we're cruising down the 'main drag' I guess you would call it, you want a real race? ok, but not for money. .. anyway, so he had me follow him to his house to get his '73 Mach 1 out of the garage and of course, it was all cammed out and I thought, well, that's what it's going to take... so we went to they're racing place and ended up, I beat him by a good Car length 👉🏼 Surprise! That was the kind of car it was. A true jaw dropper and mythical? No...but very, very memorable. I always wondered if maybe they had it blueprinted cos it took an 11 second (pull the wheels up car to beat it)... Except for that big Chrysler that day cruising down a regular street, lite to lite and he pulled away from me so that sleeper was really cool and fast! Hey, I need to tell you about the rat race against that trans am that nite... 😂

Like yoga said... there is another skywalker. Or in this case another Camaro... in 1970 one of the pilot car went down the line with an LS6. It was sent to the legendary Smokey Yunick for testing. After he passed it end up in private hands. It was shadow gray paint. I have a few pictures of it. Amazing car.

The valve springs for the first design racing camshaft were made of defective steel and would lose tension quickly. The 1966 - early 1967 Pontiac Ram Air valve springs had the same problem.

While there were quite a number of "1 of 1" muscle cars, this one was definitely an extra special one. Very cool. I really don't like the shady business regarding the paperwork... how did it "suddenly turn up" in Dana Mecum's hands? Mecum should provide an explanation, lest people think he was somehow complicit (or simply silent) in the paperwork's disappearance.
