What people may not remember about the Game 6 of the 1991 Series was that Kirby Puckett had already had a game for the ages: Triple, single, stolen base, sac fly, and a spectacular run-saving catch against the hockey glass in the Metrodome's center field. The winning dinger was just the cherry on top of the sundae. I remember well the burst of noise from the home crowd, the Twins celebration, the look of utter dejection on Charlie Liebrandt as he left the mound, and of course Jack Buck's call of "And we'll see you tomorrow night!". One of many highlights of the best World Series I've seen in my lifetime (of course, as a Twins fan I'm more that slightly biased).

Game 7 of the 1960 World Series had everything you’d ever want out of a deciding contest. The Pirates were massive underdogs against the Yankees dynasty and were beat by double digits in their three losses (a combined 38-3). Their three wins were mostly scrappy, lower-scoring affairs in which they never scored more than 6 runs. So the fact they had a chance to win such a high-scoring affair was notable. Even more notable is the fact that this game featured wild swings in momentum. The Pirates jumped out to a 4-0 lead, then trailed 7-4 after the top of the 8th. They then retook the lead 9-7 after a 5 run explosion in the following frame. They couldn’t close out the game, however, as the Yankees tied it in the top of the 9th - setting the stage for Mazeroski. Finally, Mazeroski was a defensive guru at second base and definitely was not known for his power. (Also home runs at Forbes Field were not easy to come by.) I feel like 1960 gets overlooked because of how long ago it happened. If a game like this were to occur today, it would be at the top of every “Best World Series Games Ever” lists.

Agree this one was the best, Carters is the 2nd best winning the World Series in game 7 and game 6 take the cake. Gibson is the 3rd best for what it was. After that all of them are pretty great (Gonzalez against Yankees is probably the weakest because that isn’t a HR in a lot of parks) and no I’m a Cardinals fan not a Yankees fan. Freese as a Cardinals fan was cool, but it’s the middle of the list overall other than the Camera work, it probably did have the best cameraman following Freese.

As a MLB purist it’s hard to see guys like Gwynn and Puckett die at early ages. Those guys were two of the best pure hitters I ever saw. I still maintain that Frank Thomas in his hey day is the best hitter overall of that era (yes I’m a Sox fan so maybe a bit biased) but guys like Gwynn and Boggs and Puckett were awesome too. I also miss the days when stolen bases were important from a strategy standpoint. Never forget Vince Coleman and Ricky Henderson stealing 100-150 bases in a year with ease. You knew when they got on first they would swipe second and third if at all possible. Eric Davis could have been in that realm too had he not gotten injured (my opinion).

The Dusty Rhodes game was the first one I could remember seeing on TV. I was at the Mathews game. That could have been a brutal loss after Spahn pitched a great game. By the way he also gave up the lead run in the tenth. But pitched a complete game. You would never see that today. He was a great pitcher and pretty good at the plate at well. Lost 3 years to the army. I don't know if he would have caught Johnson. He was 54 behind when he retired. But no doubt he would have been the 3rd best pitcher in wins.

@@daveshearer1961 I've heard, and most likely correctly, that Eckersly was extremely tough on right handed hitters, but lefties had a much better chance against him. Gibson was a lefty. However, I'd still prefer to have Eckersly pitch to a lefty, than most of the mediocre right handed pitchers out there. Eck's three quarters to sidearm delivery made him real nasty to right handed hitters, but obviously lefties were a bigger challenge for him.

Mazeroski's won the series as well and it gets a slight nod in my book because it was a game 7 walkoff while Carter's was a game 6 walkoff. If Carter hadn't hit his and the Jays went on to lose the game, they still had a game 7 available to potentially win the series. Mazeroski and the Pirates didn't have that luxury which makes it slightly more clutch. I think Mazeroski's walkoff occurring in 1960 takes away some of the glamour compared to others on the list because most fans of the game today weren't alive when it happened and thus didn't get to experience it in the moment.

Since this video was made, Max Muncy of the Dodgers added his walk-off homer in Game 3 of the 2018 World Series to end an 18-inning marathon against the Boston Red Sox. (That game saw Boston flamethrower Nathan Eovaldi enter the game in relief in the 9th inning and pitch 9 innings because the Sox had run out of relief pitchers--the Muncy home run was the only run he allowed in what was otherwise one of the greatest postseason relief performances of all time.) EDIT: I found a video of Muncy's home run (and his earlier at-bat in the 15th inning where he missed hitting a walk-off home run by about a foot, hooking it just outside the right field foul pole): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q6yPhq2GvcW4fYk.html

Flaky Bill Lee thinking it was a good idea to throw Tony Perez a blooper pitch in the most important game of the year was pretty bad. Darrell Johnson choosing career minor leaguer Jim Burton to pitch the 9th was worse. I've always believed Luis Tiant should have pitched that 9th. Yes I know he pitched Game 6 and didn't do well, and was probably exhausted. I don't care. With my balls pinned to the wall I'll trust Tiant throwing 60 mph more than I'll trust some green kid out of nowhere throwing 90 mph in the biggest inning of the year. The Diamondbacks did something similar in 2001 when they brought in Randy Johnson on 0 days rest to pitch the 9th inning against the Yankees in Game 7, and it paid off when the D-Backs rallied in the 9th for the winning runs. Yeah i realize Johnson had a rocking-chair game in Game 6 in 2001 when the Diamondbacks blew out the Yankees so it's not exactly similar, but I still don't care. Jim Burton, Darrell Johnson? Really? Like old Sparky Anderson used to say, "Make them beat your best."

Freese's HR was iconic, but Gibby's was legendary. Much like Puckett's HR, the one Freese had was iconic not necessarily because of the homer itself, but because of the heroics prior to...Puckett was great with his defense, while Freese did his damage at the plate. Gibby's AB was epic even if he hadn't hit that HR...he managed to take Eck, who was one of the best closers in that era, to a full count with one on and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th...and he did all of this on not one, but TWO bad knees.
