World War One Zeppelin raids on London

The First World War was not confined to formal battlefields. Bombing raids meant that Londoners faced death and destruction on their own doorsteps. The first zeppelin raid on London during World War I took place on 31 May 1915. Raids would continue on the capital until 1917.
Interviewees recall taking cover as a zeppelin appears over the Thames, being carried down to a synagogue (shul) basement during a raid as a child and a devastating raid near the London docks as a schoolchild.
A huge thank you to all of the interviewees who agreed to share their memories with the Museum of London.

My nan born in Peckham in 1910 remembered waving at the Zeppelin while she and her friends stood in a stream playing. It was on it's way to bomb London. Nan said the kids all waved as they'd never seen anything like it before. She also said the people on the Zeppelin waved back.

I remember my grandmother telling me how she hid under the kitchen table with her mother as a Zeppelin passed overhead; during WW1. She said they were quite terrified.

Not sure if it's a good or a bad thing that not until a video game set in WW1 (named Battlefield 1), as something that was made for entertainment these days, I didn't know that german Zeppelins were bombing London in WW1. In the game a part of a story revolving around a young aviator includes a fight around and in a german Zeppelin that is over London. Anyways, must be a good thing since I learned something new today. Cheers from Germany

Very much like the other poster( smaniz), I did not know that London was bombed using Zeppelins. I watched the film "The Man Who knew Infinity" the other day and there was a scene in the film that showed a Zeppelin bombing a college. I was really surprised. I grew up until I was 18 with my great-grandmother who had been born in 1896 and thought she had told me lots about the World Wars but I don;t ever recall hearing about Zeppelins. I have even been to the IWM in Manchester... The scene in the film was quite frightening, as one of the ladies says in the video above, it was huge..HUGE.

The North Sea Blockade of Germany - for which planning began in 1904 under PM Balfour - was invoked within 24 hours of the Brits declaration of war on Germany in 1914.......nearly 700,000 German men. women and kids died as a result of the blockade....with millions more Germans to suffer lifetime health issues because of it...now do you unertsnad why the Gertman population was less than enamoured with the international Zionist bankers behind WW1......hmmmmm...feeling duped are we? Going through articles passed down from family I have just come across a small pamphlet that is titled 'The great air raids on England, Spet 3rd, 23rd & Oct 1st 1916'. Souvenir Photographs and official reports. The first page shows a Zeppelin and underneath is written 'The German Baby killer on its mission of "Kultur".

My grandfather was killed on 13th June 1917. A bomb fell through the roof of his office in Fenchurch Street, killing him and killing and maiming some young office girls. My father was in the street with his mother, and they saw the whole scene. During WW2 my father would never hide in a shelter during the raids. He preferred to be n the open as the bombs fell. On that day bombs also fell on a junior school killing small children. Not really a subject for a computer "game" IMHO.

@BIZGIZ Hi, my grandfather was killed on13th June1917, which was the first raid on London by Gotha Bombers, which replaced the Zeppelins. I understand that when the Zeppelins flew over, they would stand in the streets and look up at them, rather than take shelter.

You know, one day WWI and WWII will be forgotten and a worse war will plague mankind.
@SillyMoustache
@SillyMoustache 4 жыл бұрын
@@Emanuela9 IF WW1 and WW2 ARE forgotten, it will be due to the failure of education, and the worst thing that could happen. as they are lessons for the world. However, we still recall the many invasions of the Roman Empire across Europe North Africa, and the middle east, and the impact of the invaders from Scandinavia, and the Norman invasion, and the Civil war(s) in the 1600s, so why two world wars should be forgotten would be through crass ignorance. "Those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it".

@@jpkcoffvevo nah they had specific loads that they'd drop from huge hangar doors. don't be misleading. They also had no intention of hitting civilian targets, they meant to hit military ports and harbors, but the bombs were really inaccurate at high altitude.
