I didn’t realize the answer was that soon in the movie until today when I saw it.

This is the only movie that can work me into a fury. I despise most book to movie adaptions, but this one holds the throne in my personal hell. Such a shallow ‘adaption’ of such a groundbreaking book.

Yeah I read the book in high school over a decade ago and kind of figured a film adaption would do this. The WWZ book was really something that required a series if it were to be adapted on screen. I mean I guess the walking dead is kind of an example of that (sort of) as the book zombies were quite slow.

I really like the part when one of the dogs is in trouble and the remote handler wasn't allowed to leave to rescue it, so she domes her superior. Of course, they hang her, but they correct the policy and allow the handler to go out and rescue their dog.

This is what I kept saying, the book had far too many stories running parallel to fit in a movie, we got no lobo, no SIR and worst of all no badass Japanese duo clearing tokyo. The cannibalism for the sake of survival was really cool too, so were the sewer people. But worst of all....the wwz zombies didn't run. I swear they got halfway through the bodyguards chapter and stopped reading. The movie also ignores how the UK survived, taking weapons from museums was brilliant so too was taking over castles for bases. Essentially making England what it was once before melee focused and using big walls to keep them safe.

Mark Hamil needed to be sourced as the UN General, man I loved that in the books

If you red the book, and they make a movie about the book it wouldn't work as it's too long, it would need to be a 10 episodes 1 hour each Netflix series as there's too many stories about the virus to cover.

@@30cal23 yeah it’s also on Xbox, pretty sure it’s a permanent gamepass resident so you can get gamepass for like a buck and try it out. It’s pretty damn fun, the hordes are terrifying and you definitely need teamwork to survive the onslaught. The different global stories are neat too, like the Japanese campaign where survivors are evacuating onto a cruise ship and the horde must be repelled while survivors board, only for an outbreak on the ship to force a desperate final stand against the horde once more. There’s also the Russian campaign which is pretty nice, the campaign follows a band of survivors working with surviving Russian military, who are planning to retake Moscow by initiating an old KGB contingency which will flood Moscow with deadly nerve gas, rendering the city safe once the gas dissipates.

True, though considering Roanoke is a microbiologist and not a physicist, it's not surprising he wouldn't know the difference. Most people don't realize that nuclear reactors and nuclear bombs work in very different ways. Hell, they generally don't even use the same material as fuel. The main key difference is that nuclear bombs want to use a material that is highly reactive, so that once criticality is reached, the material releases nearly all of it's energy at once. By contract, a reactor uses fuel that has a much lower rate of reaction. In a reactor, nuclear material is held in a state of sub-criticality, though even if it did go critical, it wouldn't be a sudden release of all it's energy. Criticality is simply the point where the nuclear reaction becomes self-sustaining without any external influence. The few instances of a nuclear reactor exploding were not the result of the fuel like in a nuclear bomb, but rather the cooling medium (typically water) flashing to steam and creating enough pressure to rupture the containment vessel. Add to that the fact that water will at extreme temperatures separate into oxygen and hydrogen (both highly flammable) and such an explosion can be very destructive, but nowhere near as destructive as an actual nuclear detonation. The fact is, if a nuclear reactor was just left alone in an operational state, so long as water was still flowing through the core, the core would over time actually become less reactive, as radioactive materials always decay into less reactive elements.

well, this movie did raise my awareness for the book.

I'm on my hundredth re-read and I looooooove it so much.

What scares me about the zombies in the book is the fact that, unlike many zombies in other media who have some semblance of intelligence or memories, they have absolutely nothing in terms of either. They are driven entirely by preprogrammed sets of behaviors. They are incapable of learning or adapting in any way. they are machines, pure and simple.

Going critical isnt even an issue. Nuclear reactors are designed to be at the critical point. Supercritical is when you get an explosion. The critical point is the point where one ejected nuetron causes a fission event in one other nucleus. Thats how fission reactors work. Supercritical causes an explosion. Reactors dont explode at critical point

I loved the idea of the legionnaires taking out the infected with a simple ditch, a lot of oil, and a torch. That is some real ingenuity.

I love the zombie survival guide except the firearms chapter, that part had some really groan worthy statements

I'm not sure because I grew up on a farm so I came (and still come) across death fairly regularly, but there is definitely something telling me that something is dead or dying, even if it doesn't look obvious.

Smell of death is an actual thing! Some people have a more acute sense of smell and can scent DKA in people, cancers, infections ECT. My mom has a 'super' nose and works as an ER nurse and can reliably tell when people being brought in are fixing to go into or actively are in DKA. She also caught infections that were almost missed by doctors by smell alone~

Maybe not death but the smell of an opportunistic infection. You can often smell that on very sick people. Clearly, she wasn't dead yet although some parts of her might have been headed that way. Once when I worked in a detox, I had a patient who looked very clean but smelled very funky. Turned out one of his fingers had been stabbed with a fork ( at least that's the story he told) and he had a nasty infection. Because it was his hand, he had to be hospitalized and given IV antibiotics.

I don’t have a super nose, but I can tell when my kids are sick based on their smell. I don’t think I could do it with anyone else. But, with them, I know about 3 days before it’s even detectable to the doctors or with lab tests. It was really frustrating before I realized my lead-time, but now I know if I wait 3 days I’ll only have to go in the one time instead of twice.

The Solomon Virus avoided those who were diseased. The process of converting individual cells into their in organisms was a slow process compared to that of just fully infecting the body. There isn't any point infecting a human when it's going to pit the Solomon Virus directly against HIV. It may be good at killing humans and bacteria, but other viruses are a different kettle of fish altogether.

I got the Zombie survival guide as a kid and read it multiply times and found it very engaging. Even with it being fictional some of it is good knowledge. Plus a great basis for a young person to form their own world in such a scenerio

Not pushing all of the furniture they could down the stairwell to slow/ stop the infects at the apartment building where they pick up the boy and evacuate on the helicopter, while doing very little else to protect themselves is " smart"? Dr. trippy slipping and capping himself within ten seconds of landing was " smart"? Pitt's character not putting the sat phone on vibrate or turning it off, while in a situation where being silent was not only essential, but was stressed to him by the military guys was " smart"? Pitt's character's wife randomly calling him when she knew he was out in dangerous situations, where stealt may mean life or death, was " smart"? Believing that, because he saw the virus take only twelve seconds to affect the transformation to zombie ONCE meant that is how long it will definitely, always take, to the point of banking his family on it was " smart"? The idea that the zombies can smell infection , while running and attacking everything at full speed, even in an individual who was infected moments ago, is " smart"? Pitt leaving his only weapon outside the clean room was " smart"? Pitt pulling the metal from his injury was " smart"? The rules of the world being that is was a " disease" and not" reanimated dead" but then showing a hand, whose body had been reduced to ash, still moving was " smart and explaining the rules well"? The idea that one guy, who is not a physician/ medical researcher, while constantly fleeing for his life, figured out that the infected avoid the sick, while members of the WHO don't was " smart"? Not telling Pitt the code before he went into the infected wing of the WHO, was " smart"? Not figuring out that he could write questions about what infectious agent he should or should not inject himself with, then waiting for the doctors to answer by manipulating the gimbal on the camera he was facing was " smart"? Also. NO. Predators DO NOT avoid sick prey. They preferentially attack sick and injured prey, as it makes the prey easier to catch/ kill. Ask a biologist/ zoologist. No. Viral infections CANNOT spread through a human body in seconds. Full stop!!! Can't happen. No. This movie was far from " smart".

The idea that a virus can spread through a body in 12 seconds, which is physically impossible because that means the virus is invading cells and forcing replication of itself at the speed of light, while getting pumped through the human body at impossible speeds is smart?( No . the writers just don't know how human bodies or viruses work) The not actually planning AT ALL in the WHO lab was smart? No. This movie may have had a few smart parts, but, it was not itself smart. Also, thanks for calling me stupid. I had not insulted you, just this dumpster fire of a movie( which most agree was indeed a dumpster fire) . Way to be classy.

But, he really did just that with me. He made stupid decision after stupid decision. He got distracted by his whining daughter, who his wife was handling, while driving for his family's lives. He , and his family, made no effort to barricade the stairs at the apartment building. He, and his family, made little effort to arm themselves, until the last minute, at the apartment building. He assumed , after one observation, under a stressful situation, that the virus MUST take exactly 12 seconds to infect, even after being told by others that that was not a rule set in stone( and , supposedly, have some education about how viruses actually work, wherein he would know that a 12 second time is physically impossible). He left his phone on in a situation where he had to be as silent as can be. He pulled the metal out of his wound( Yes. Dumb. Was dumb when Irwin did it, was dumb when Pitt's character did it). He made no effort to gather as much information from the WHO staff as possible before venturing into the dangerous infected lab. He could not figure out he could write messages to the staff and they could operate the gimbal on the camera to answer him. He , apparently, didn't bring his sat phone into the lab to get advice from his base. Finally, he abandoned, didn't drop, didn't get disarmed, just put down and left his only weapon in yet another dangerous situation. And, remember, this wasn't just some average Joe off the street. This was a guy who was selected because he was supposed to be very smart, educated, and experienced in dangerous situations. If he was just " some guy" some of this could be excused, but this guy was supposed to be highly trained and effective in life and death situations. That's why he was picked to do the job.

The movie went out of its way to say they were not dead. You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of how stress and adrenaline affect your ability to think - " Oh please. I have a great idea how stress affects people. 25 years in EMS here. If I made the stupid ass decisions this supposed professional made I would have been sued into oblivion and fired over two decades ago. If the movie sets up that he is this right guy for the job they can't then have him keep making rookie mistakes. It makes no sense, but then, neither does much else in this movie. Nope. At the end of the day most of the movie is stupid and unrealistic. Sure, there are a lot of dumb decisions in zombie movies( hell, in horror movies in general) but this one billed its main protagonist as a highly trained and experienced professional, then had him make rookie mistake after rookie mistake. That would be like branding your main character as a highly qualified surgeon and then without other good reason, have them not scrub before surgery , forget what organ to remove/fix, and forget to close the incision at the end. Are any of those mistakes someone who did not know what they were doing would make? Yes. Are those mistakes you would expect a trained surgeon to make? No. Not at all. You would certainly not expect said surgeon to make all of them. But, that was Pitt's character. Forget to keep the phone from ringing? Check. Don't think of simple security measures for your family during a emergency? Check. Make stupid assumptions about an unknown disease with incredibly limited data? Check. Forget to ask pretty much any questions from trained medical professionals that may save your life and/ or the world? Check. Forget your one and only weapon when you really need it? Checkaroo. Just inject any , possibly rapidly fatal, and possibly uncurable infectious agent when you could easily write notes asking the people on the other end of the camera what ones to take, but do write a message asking them to tell your wife/ family you love them? Check-check-checkity-check-check. Seriously. for this guy supposedly being so good as things like this that they put him basically in charge of saving the world it would be like me forgetting to put my medical equipment in my ambulance after checking it at the start of my shift, then forgetting how to start and IV, then forgetting what medication to give for ventricular tachycardia, then forgetting to give my report at the hospital, all in one shift, and then you saying " It's okay. People forget things in stressful situations". Yes. People do. When trained professionals do it, all in one day to boot, they get fired, sued, and , possibly, incarcerated. Why? Because we expect more of them. The movie set us up to expect more from him( he was not the typical horror movie" Stupid teen". He was a highly trained and experienced professional) then seemed to forget who their protagonist was supposed to be and let him make normal " guy on the street " mistakes.

And dumb. Instead of a great slow burn of a movie actually creating suspense, we have chase after chase after chase with only a paper thin premise trying to make a coherent movie out of it. Read the book instead.
