I live in Oregon and there are some nice downtowns in the state (Jacksonville, Oakland), but I was blown away when my wife took me to where she grew up in Iowa. The little town is named Pella (where Pella windows are made). Pella was settled exclusively by Dutch immigrants in the 1800s. The downtown buildings are all Dutch front architecture. They have the largest windmill in the country. They also have this glockenspiel clock with Dutch figurines entertaining the townspeople at the top of each hour in the afternoon. Each year they have a tulip festival. You'll feel like you're in Holland if you ever visit the place.

I’m shocked Pella didn’t make the list, it’s the first town I thought of when I saw the title of this vid. The Dutch letters…so good.

I'm also surprised Pella, IA was not mentioned. Galena, IL is also a pretty downtown area. With the exception of Elizabethtown, KY, it seemed like only the coasts were represented in this video...Fly over country, is still flown over!

Lots of art, shops, dining, entertainment etc. Last full weekend in September is the BBQ on the River. Yummy! 50k plus folks come in from everywhere. Book your rooms early.

I would add New Hope, Pennsylvania and perhaps its sister town across the Delaware river, Lambertville, New Jersey. Weekends are incredibly crowded but the main streets are just amazing. I live in Hallowell Maine. It is a small town just south of Augusta. There are no chain restaurants or stores here on main street (Water Street). All businesses are locally owned. It is on the Kennebec river. In the summer there are bands everywhere, many playing outdoors on patios. There are street musicians too. There are musicians playing here year round. There are buildings here over 200 years old.

I know it's considered a state park but Market St on Mackinac Island, Michigan is great during the summer and Halloween weekend. (I think Market St is the main st). No motor vehicles allowed besides emergency vehicles. Only horse/carriage, walk, or bicycle.
@qwkimball
@qwkimball Жыл бұрын
You may be thinking of Main/Lakeshore Drive/M-185. It has businesses on both sides of the street. Market is a block over. Although about 80% of Mackinac Island is Mackinac Island State Park, the downtown area is not. The Governor's Summer residence is in the Park. So, if you visited The Pink Pony or the Butterfly House or Ryba's Fudge, you were on Lakeshore Drive/Main/M-185. M-185 makes a full circuit of the Island. Like almost all locals who don't work there, I only visit the Island (and it's just called "the Island" here; if you're referring to the other islands of the Straits, you name them, like Bois Blanc and Round) when someone who visits ME wants to go. It's worth a single trip, for sure. My grandfather, in the 1940s, wintered the horses from the Island on his farm in Presque Isle County.

I grew up on the Monterey Peninsula in the central coast region of California. My favorite "main street" is in Pacific Grove, just south of Monterey or north of Pebble Beach & Carmel by the Sea. Pacific Grove's main street is called Lighthouse Ave., where most of the shops & restaurants are located. It is just a few blocks up from Oceanview Blvd., which runs along the waterfront & is famous for all the Victorian style mansions (a few have been turned into B&B's). Pacific Grove's nickname is "Butterfly Town USA" because it is one of the stops along the California coast where the western U.S. population of Monarch butterflies migrate to every winter. Have you ever been there? 🦋🦋🦋

(BTW, Briggs made a mistake in referring to the Danish town of Solvang being "Dutch" - it's actually "Danish." And then others chimed in about Holland/the Netherlands, etc., but... It's actually Denmark. It's easy to get those 2 countries/languages/names confused. My wife is Dutch - otherwise I wouldn't know either! And we now have some friends who're from Denmark - they speak Danish and are referred to as "Danes." The Dutch speak Dutch and are referred to as Dutch, but there's controversy as to whether or not their country should be called the Netherlands or Holland. 😂)

Have you been up here to highlands area lately? Im in franklin, use to live in bryson city. Use to go to highlands cause it’s right up the road and scenic drive. Bumper to bumper now! Scary on that road . They did close it to big trucks finally but you get huge motor homes and dump trucks etc still. Land and homes in this area are still selling overnight, sight unseen. We have like 8 grocery stores now, Aldi, chick fil a etc etc etc Like 7 roundabouts and traffic is awful. Seems we are now the new florida. Not happy about it at all and probably selling and going somewhere away from east coast. As much as I’ll miss this place, it’s now walleyworld. Cutting off tops of mountains and building houses .

There are two other small towns worth checking out: Murphys, CA and Saratoga, NY. Murphys has a crazy amount of wine tasting places all within a few blocks, reasonable costs, and it’s super cute to boot! Saratoga, NY has a ton of Revolutionary War history and the Main Street is very cute with lots of restaurants and shops. It also has a historic horse racing track open for 8 weeks per year (end of Jul to beginning of Sept).

On one hand, sometimes the themed towns like Solvang can be a bit kitschy. But I would say that combining Leavenworth, Washington’s main street with Leavenworth’s backdrop… THAT is something else. I’ll respect that this video is about main streets… to a point. About Jamestown… take the drive on California 49 (route number is not an accident, it’s Miner 49er country). Probably from Placerville to just past Sonora and Jamestown, and I believe Mariposa has been mentioned. There’s several towns like Jamestown that hug the old highway and ooze rustic charm.

Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin (Door County) 3rd Ave (as the name suggests) is the Main Street and only two blocks from the water and the iconic Old Steel Bridge; a channel large ships use to connect to Green Bay without having to go all around the peninsula. Some really cool ones, Solvang being my favorite on the list, but that's because it's the only one I've been to! I grew up in So Cal in a town called Claremont, and I think it could qualify. The buildings aren't fancy but it's so charming and fun to roam around. The "Village" hasn't changed much in the 70 years but they have converted old packing houses into more shops, places to eat, etc and the homes surrounding the town are to die for. It's like being in New England, but out West. And then surrounding those homes are small private colleges, all with huge trees, vines and flowers everywhere you look. Come Fall, the downtown area actually turns colors, given the types of trees and the fact it's up against Mt Baldy. The only other suggestion is Carmel by the Sea. Love this theme!

Thanks Briggs, I enjoy your videos. I am an Army BRAT, I've lived in 4 other countries and 12 different states. I've been to every state, I used to travel for work and have moved 49 times. My favorite place was Okinawa, Japan, where I learned to sail and Scuba dive. But I have broken way to many bones in my misspent youth. I really like drier/desert towns. My 2nd favorite place was Austin, TX. The music scene and often warm & dry wind from the west agreed with me. I would drive to San Angelo, TX riverwalk, when Austin got to humid (Gulf Hurricanes). My 3rd favorite was Sierra Vista, AZ. My dad was stationed at Ft Huachuca, AZ. Small town, low crime and my kind of weather. Also, the best school I attended, out of 13 schools. Buena High School had 2000+ students and was more like a college on course selection.

SLO, CA should probably be on your list. We have buildings older than the United States and quite a few from the early 1800s. The whole DNA of the town has changed very slowly in the last 200 years which is rare for California. It's easily one of the most beautiful missions in California with a park and a creak that runs under and through the town. Charming victorian and mission revival architecture everywhere mixed with a lot of more "east coast" looking buildings. It's a cute, very pedestrian friendly "downtown" with one of the largest farmer's markets in the state that pops off every Thursday night -- 10 to 20K people show up for that without fail. Higuera and Monterey streets are absolutely charming. It's the northernmost stop on the Pacific Surfliner line that runs all the way to San Diego. The downtown is surrounded by beautiful mountains, there's hiking, quick drives to amazing beach towns, wine just 8 minutes south of downtown and of course it's home to Cal Poly. Is it cheap to live here? HELL NO. Ever since Covid we've been invaded by silicon valley and that's driven housing prices through the roof. This is why I'm finally mentioning SLO, because the damage is done BUT it will always and forever be a beautiful place.
