This game is just awesome, easily the best looking Genesis game I've seen (yes, even better looking than Streets of Rage 3 and Contra: Hard Corps). Unfortunately, I think it never got the praise that it deserved. Maybe some people got driven away because there were so many movements, weapon changing, mode switching, HUD info, and on-screen action at the same time. Still, I hope that more people give it a try now that an upgraded version is part of the Sega Ages collection. Kudos!

I love it how confused the story sounds in this game. It's like: Terrorist group wants to kill *all* humans, terrorist group for unknown reasons turns on their leader, and then they decided that the new leader is killing too many humans even though they want to kill all of them, so they want the old leader back and the old leader also wants to come back and has to spend the game doing that.

@M. R.R. Well the Epsilon you play as is only half of the original being. After Xi-Tiger betrays him, he splits into effectively two beings. Epsilon 1, the Stage 17 boss is the evil essence of the old Epsilon. So depending on the version of him, he's a villain or hero.

Development of Alien Soldier lasted two years and was led by Hideyuki Suganami, who from the start wanted to make the entire game himself. Despite 32-bit fifth generation hardware already on the market, he chose to program the game for the 16-bit Mega Drive, claiming that he may have been too captivated by the idea of making an "action shooting" game. Suganami was deeply invested in the game and devoted a lot of time to developing it. After the game's release, he wished he continued working on the game, believing he could have improved on the story and graphics.[5]

Planned stuff which don't make their way in the final product is quite common phenomenon in video games history & reasons for this can be multiple: memory space constraints (especially prior to the CD era); time constraints (development time &/or the need to meet the deadline); better content focus rather than add what could be unnecessary stuff (some games don't need to be longer than what they are)... I'm not surprised that Alien Soldier' designers had more on their hands given how creative they are but I won't call it an "unfinished game", rather something that had potential for a sequel (that white giant man is intriguing tho & somehow makes me think of Radiant Silvergun final boss).

@IsaacInfernape2000 32X doom isn't that bad. Graphics and FPS are better than SNES doom. It's missing a few levels but it is certainly much better than Saturn Doom. Sound effects all being sampled at least in the original can't have been messed up really. Music might be crap though I suppose but the game is not awful. There is less difference between it and the original than there was between arcade games and many console ports at the time. 3DO doom is worse performance-wise too.

@@bangerbangerbro Yeah Treasure were wizards on the MD, check out what Mega Drive Profile has to say about the game and of course I recommend completing it yourself (if you can, it's not easy!) It's like Shadow of the Colossus but as a 16-bit run n gun, both with creative boss design. No other 2D game to this day afaik plays like it. So yeah, for me it's one of the best ever, alongside any classic on Snes and other systems.

@@retrosoul8770 Despite being a Megadrive guy, I didn't really know much about them a few months ago, pretty much dismissing someone talking about their games when giving examples of something impressive. But a week or so ago I found Dynamite Headdy (probably their best selling and most common game) for sale at a local shop for an OK price and bought it as I knew it was meant to be good. I like the visuals of it and the sound (nice sounds though I am not a massive fan of the music itself as in the composition of most of it) but I'm not the biggest fan of the game. It reminds me of Rayman in some ways which I don't particularly like either. Maybe it will grow on me. I think I'm just not really into the theme it has and a lot of the things in it I find a little creepy though I will probably get used to them. The sampling is the clearest I have ever heard on Megadrive though. Some of the bosses remind me of Yoshi's Island bosses what with the weird squashing and stretching things some of them do. In the practice target thing I was worried I was going to damage my controller. MD controllers are a bit rickety and the D-pads do that rubbing thing that is especially noticeable when you use them fast. But after getting that I started properly looking at the treasure stuff and of course despairing at the prices - maybe I was better off not knowing haha!

Personally I prefer Gunstar Heroes more. Just as much action, nonstop enemy waves, less bosses, more focus on platforming. GH is also pretty badass in itself. As for the SNES, it was built more for RPG's, which it is king of for that generation of gaming. Both systems churned out some pretty damned good platformers too. To me this game felt a little hollow, the focus was too much on boss battles, I prefer to have some fodder to destroy before I reach the boss, something Gunstar Heroes delivers in spades.

@@sluggy68 it's fluid, which means it's alot of frames, more frames is more data and these old games didn't have that much for data, I'd say it's impressive

I wonder why it has taken soooo many years to create a game like this. Is it possible that they needed all that time to realize how to use the 100% of the power of the Genesis? Imagine how good 16-bit games could have been if they created games like this 3 or 4 years before.. damn.

Man, I've played this and it is HARD!! SmokeFrostHeart makes it look easy, and, deserves some serious props. I have a quick question what does the Force meter indicate(I think it shows how powerful your weapon is, but can it be refilled, how)? Thanks! Great playthrough! I won't lie, I couldn't even beat the first boss, and I've beaten all the Streets of Rages solo on hard(not hardest but hard)and Demon's Souls(though, it, is more an excercise in patience and persistence)I also beat Ornstein and Smough(DaS)on my second try. I'm not trying to brag, just trying to show how hard this game is, and how impressive and great, of an accomplishment beating this game(and without dying once no less!)is.

talk about a late arrival lmao Anyway, Force is effectively your Ammo. The lower it gets, the shorter your weapon's range becomes (although in the case of Ranger Force, that instead lowers damage dealt and maybe bullet speed.) To recharge your Force, just select a different weapon. After a while the unselected Forces will start to regenerate (although that regeneration speed depends on the weapon: Sword Force is the slowest to recharge, while Buster Force is the fastest. At least, to my knowledge anyway.) Edit because I forgor: You can also recharge your Forces by picking up a weapon capsule with the same icon. This has the added bonus of adding 250 to your maximum ammo (to a max of 2000.) If you don't want to wait around for the right icon to cycle through, just shoot at the weapon capsule with the weapon you want to refill + upgrade. If you run out of ammo for a Force, it becomes "Null Force" which is incredibly weak and barely reaches past your hand. It can at least damage basically everything, where every other Force is ineffective against at least one enemy or enemy type. It also still triggers the "shoot-to-switch" capsule mechanic so if you need an emergency refill, you aren't forced into waiting.
