Mike Arnold flew within 10 knots of this on 65 horsepower in the early 90’s. Look it up. During the building process and before he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he step by step took us through the build and flight test and explained the drag reduction philosophies he used to break world records which still stand today. If you are a designer, you must hold this man very high for he accomplished much on very little.

@@twistedyogert Here are the best leads I can give you for searching. Mike Arnold, AR5, World record and Max Volume on Guitar. The last was his good friend who followed Mike through the whole process. What you do not find under Mikes name or the name of the aircraft, you will find under Max Volume. I have seen of all what Mr Arnold had to do with the paper work and preparation for the world record attempt. It was quite involved with teams of officials and a course laid out for runs up and back. He was limited on altitude before and during the runs. Shortly after that….weeks he had and engine out fuel starvation, I believe and put it down in the desert. Lost a gear leg and took several years to get it back to flying condition. In the mean time he became fairly known for giving talks At Oshkosh and had many visits from known aerodynamics experts who examined thoroughly his aircraft. The best one of these video is a Mr Carmichael. I’ll keep looking for the actual run. I expect it is buried within one of these many videos which documented what he did.

If you want to go faster the two improvements that would make the most difference are a turbo and a constant speed prop, anything else is going to be a knot or two at best. A turbo would probably give you 30 knots up high.

I am retired from a missile manufacturing company and we used a green duct tape that we called Mach 2 tape. I have no idea where it came from or who makes it but I have never seen it anywhere else. We had a company code for it and went to Supply and asked and it showed up. For part of my career I was on teams that fired test missiles at White Sands Missile Range. We fired a lot of missiles with Mach 2 tape on it somewhere and it always survived.

The aluminum version of that tape was a mechanics favorite item with TWA Airlines years ago. Worked for TWA in Wichita, KS (ICT) in the mid-90's. TWA had a number of older DC-9's that had issues with the engine cowling access door where you checked engine oil levels on the JT8D engines. They'd tape the doors shut because the fasteners were plum worn the hell out. LOL

We would slap that tape on everything from helo's to fighter jets.What we found was this one brown duct tape I do not know the brand name held up at over 600mph without a problem and it probably would have held up to a higher speed but that was all we could do at the time.

Jimmy, tell me how financing and insurance differs between your experimental vs. a certified plane. Is the cost more? Is the down payment more? I love the idea of a fast airplane that sips fuel like a trainer. One other idea to locate impact spots for the landing gear, go to a golf shop and buy golf club impact tape. It will tell you where anything is impacting a switch or rubs or things that shouldn't be rubbing that is rubbing. Cheers.

There’s a piece of video showing a combat repair to a Sea Harrier on one of the aircraft carriers during the Falklands conflict. The Harrier had taken a small projectile through the tail, if I remember correctly (it was 1982) the fitter used a taped repair to the skin. Perhaps someone knows where the video is, it must be on KZfaq somewhere.

Unimpressed. Three decades ago i was on Northwest Airlines flt from Mpls to SFO. It took off and landed with duct tape of about a sq foot on leading edge at pylon. Ordinary gray 3M duct tape. AND I flew my Super Cub from MN to Yakima Washington with 103 duct tape patches covering 103 hail perforations of fabric. Not a piece came off. NASA should have put duct tape on the shuttle instead of those stupid tiles.

I know you already know that You can wash and wax your plane for a couple of extra knots in airspeed. My boss used to let me fly his Cessna 182. The Lycoming IO-540 was known for drooling out an oil slick on the bottom of the plane. Washing and waxing a 182 is like washing and waxing 5 cars. It took a lot of elbow grease to get all that oil off the bottom of the plane. I gained about 2 knots airspeed when I was energetic enough to wash and wax that plane. Your video's are really cool. Good video. I suggest getting actual aircraft jacks. They are really stable and jack straight up. Jacking a $150,000 airplane with $50 jacks may not be the most prudent action. For the tail hold-down I installed a concrete anchor and then screw in an eye bolt only when needed. I keep a dowel in the anchor and tape over the top to keep debris out. This worked in both a shade port and hangar. Test the tail hold down by jacking the wings until the nosewheel is 1/4 inch off the ground and leave it for several hours or overnight. If it fails the nose will only drop 1/4 inch before touching the concrete.
@Mike-01234
@Mike-01234 Жыл бұрын
Airports allow you to use a hammer drill to drill a hole in the concrete install a eye bolt? I could see them being okay with it in a hanger you lease the land on. I was thinking the same thing would have even been better to get 12 ton bottle jacks. I was wondering where he is keeping the plane now he had that hanger before all those nice tools.
@AZFlyDive
@AZFlyDive Жыл бұрын
@@Mike-01234 I got permission all three times that I installed the concrete anchors. The only requirement was that the anchors had to be flush with the surface. I drilled the 1/2 inch holes with a hammer drill and set the anchors using a setting tool and a hammer. The setting tool spreads the bottom of the anchor. The anchors were from Home Depot.

One of his favorite things was to roll it about 200ft agl on take off. He even did it with the FAA official from Indianapolis. She didn't believe he could do it and said "prove it". So he did.
