Mine ran out of juice 3mi from my house. Had to tote 2 jugs of Juice, three treacherous miles. I stumbled and sloshed half of it all over my new jacket. Same thing happened when I hauled a load of sailboat fuel in my truck. I had to slam on brakes and sloshed sailboat fuel all over the car beside of me. {0.o}

a someone that is also grown up with a lot of snowmobile and I live above the arctic circle in Sweden. Just saying new machines don't have problem starting when it's -20 if it's colder than -30 you will start to have problems and failure to start. I would never bring one of these machines outside the track because you can't just refuel them, but for going on a snowmobile track perfectly fine

This is super cool! I think the one thing that would make me hesitant to buy one over a gas-powered is the lack of options for extending the range. With gas, you can just strap a jerry can to the tunnel or ride out on the back of your buddy's sled and come back with one if you run out completely. With batteries, I don't see any means of getting the sled back out without towing it.

As some that has driven snow machines my whole life 60 miles is barely having fun. So what happens when you run out juice your screwed. You can't just take a spare can of fuel and get back up and running. Cool idea but not there yet we need a better technology than lithium batteries. Also have fun getting that heavy bastered unstuck from deep snow you will need like 4 of them to pull it out.

Exactly. We typically ride 150-200 miles a day so this wouldn't cut it. Would work perfectly as a utility vehicle, or something to take you out to the lake to ice fish

I like that it has all the modern tech of an electric motorcycle. I don't know about finding a recharge station out on the trail. There's still a huge advantage to carrying a gas can while offroading.

Electric snowmobiles are by no means "no maintenance". The suspension of a snowmobile takes immense beating and requires maintenance, likely even more than its gasoline counterpart since it's heavier.

Its not much heavier than a fully gassed ICE one tho. Same maintenance on shocks and track but no engine maintince.

@@matthewdscott82 it’s less than 600 lbs comparable to fully fueled gas ones. The website specs of gas snowmobiles show weight without gas or oil… misleading

@@owentrout390 Fair enough but a Ski Doo Freeride is still only 442 lbs (according to their website). Even if you added 50 lbs for fuel, which is a huge overestimation. That's a great deal lighter in comparison. That's all I'm saying.

$20K+ Wow. I can wait to see a Jerryrig video showing all these lithium batteries being environmentally recycled? I love electric vehicles and have an Electric Truck, but like smart phones, everyone wants the best, with little to no care about the environmental cost in production and afterlife.

Lithium battery's *can* be 95% recycled. There are even 2 locations in the USA that recycle car batteries commercially.

@@lukejones7366 These are lithium-iron-phosphate batteries in this snowmobile, so no cobalt. iPhones and Android phones, however, use cobalt, if it matters to you.

Pretty nifty. Having ridden snowmobiles plenty in Colorado I really like the idea of an all electric one. However, she's a heavy beast! I can't imagine taking that thing off a packed trail. It would take 3 people to get it unstuck, not too mention how hard it would be to throw around in the pow. Props to them for advancing the technology though. It would be nice to see battery tech get lighter and more energy dense

I can see these being nice for tourist places. Growing up just outside of Yellowstone, I could see these kinds of things bring nice for snowmobile tours. Definitely have a long ways before getting into to hardcore shedding market.

They will be lighter in the future, battery tech is still advancing, and battery is most of the weight.

Still sounds like the battery will drain slowly in cold weather, even with their "thermal management system". Energy is still needs to heat up those batteries after all when the thing is switched off. I'm not a battery engineer, but I feel like it might've been worthwhile for them to use a battery that is more tolerant of cold temperatures, not necessarily Li-ion based

This is cool for casual short riding. But 750 lb is really heavy and it would be nice to see the range bumped up to over 100 miles. These would be cool for rental fleets.

It's the 60miles range that kills it for most. Until range catches up closer to what gas models can do then it becomes somewhat option. I've never went out for just an hour or so.

Yeah I assumed most people who use them are out for most of the free time they have in the day. The 60 miles sounded short to me, I also figured that being a tracked vehicle the range on a pretty decently sized battery would be so low. Tracks are less efficient than wheels, but I don't know how much. And with those efficiency loss it really shows up in the regen effectiveness as well as the rolling torque required by the motor.

I have an 800 rev with a big bore kit. It will go about 65-80 miles on a full tank. Not far off, but atleast if I run out on the trail, someone can bring me some fuel!!😂😂

issue is that a waterjet is very inefficient, so with the same battery pack as this you would probably only get like 30 miles.

Most riders stop very frequently at rest points along the trails (every 1-2 hours). If the infrastructure if in place to charge along the trail, it won't be an issue. Might be an issue with off-trail riders using their mountain sled. Off trail you don't do much mileage, but being always wide open consumes a ton of fuel

The only downfall I can see is the 60 mile range and lack of chargers on snow mobile trails. I'm guessing serious snow mobilers go hundreds of miles. Otherwise, pretty cool.

As an avid snowmobiler you are correct. 60miles of range is nothing. Sleds these days go 130-175 miles on a tank. 4 hours of charging is completely impractical. They need to be able to charge in under 45 min as that is how long we stay at a bar and eat food. This electric sled is no where near ready for the trails, let alone off trail riding.

Super cool, I'd love to be able to go out into the woods in one and not have the fumes and noise. The only question I have is the ability to move it if you get stuck in a lot of powder? I've spent a lot of hours slowly shuffling the front and back end of a machine onto more stable snow to get out. Not sure if that would be possible with how heavy this is.

ppl (read me) ride yamahas in deep snow that weigh 313kg and i manage to get it unstuck so sure!

it's same/similar weight as a regular snowmobile. 297 kg compared to around 290 to 330 kg for most other regular ones. So, it's not really heavier. That's the Nomad, the touring type snowmobile. Their Ekko that's more sporty is 271 kg, like 20 kgs lighter than a comparable skidoo.

Having ridden gas snowmobiles for the last 3-5 years. I can say this is a small stepping stone, but 60 miles and 12 hours of charging is a far cry from the 100+ mile range and 2min fill up that allow for me to go on long trail rides. This is not to mention the difficulty of finding a charger along a trail up in Michigan. I love to see innovation and am definitely intrigued at the instant torque.

@@dkn2464 Nope, 60 miles is 100% charge, which everyone always forgets to tell you every manufacture never recommends you charging that high as its bad for batteries, just like filling 100% of gasoline in your now, ICE vehicle.. oh wait lol.. so that would be for the upgraded battery version.. So 60 miles minus 20% because you should only charge to 70-80% of charge is 48 miles and let's be realistic no one is riding 48 miles on something that weighs 700 pound in the freezing weather in snow, they want that buffer so realistically your range is more like 30 miles or 20 miles. Wait, then again all these figures are perfect conditions that 48 miles is probably 40 miles at best, ahh wth am I arguing, this will fail just like electric motorcycles did.

Awesome! But once the lithium batteries are too cold to work, like in the morning, what's powering this heat management system? Is there a consistent power drain, like all night? Is there a solar charging option? And can the track belt be disengaged? So you can be towed when you run out of power in the woods.

Hi Jason! There's no problem to let the batteries cool down and there's no constant drain. When you're ready to ride in the morning, the heater kicks and warms the battery, this draws a low amount of power usage. Also, no need to disengage the belt. You can tow freely as long as the snowmobile is fully turned off.

Yep! Ride it around for an hour or so, take it back to the garage and plug it in for 12 hours. Personally I will use gasoline, but much less than Al Gore uses jet fuel to tell us not to use fossil fuels🤣

No noise and no fumes would be amazing. The lack of exhaust is what I love about our electric yard tools (snow blower, mower, trimmer, and chainsaw)

Sleds do tip over get stuck and trench( trenching is when the track digs down and the floorboards are sitting on the snowpack). Most performance snowmobiles are between the 400 to 600 pound range with the very heavy utility sleds being 600 pounds 700 pounds is unheard of in the snowmobile world.

That's how all snowmobiles are. You still need your lower body to shift weight when turning and to stay on the machine. It would still be dangerous for her to ride one because snowmobiles need more speed than an atv ride.

At 621lbs, high price, low range (100km) and hp. I don’t see these doing very well. Until battery’s become lighter and more powerful I don’t see these as viable option. I know with a N/A sled, you loose hp at higher elevations and the CVT eats up a good chunk of HP. Range is not long enough for both trail and back country and weighs way too much.

The snowmobile would’ve helped in the impossible rescue… false, they would’ve had to stop 12 times to recharge and the lack of charging stations in the wilderness makes them useless. Nonetheless it’s a sweet machine!

@@bradenmchenry995 Total polution and climate change from transportation is around 1/3 of total (I think). Of that heavy trucks are one large component and small motors like snow mobiles, jet skis and lawn equipment are another. Cars are pretty well regulated but small motors are not.

seems like a great piece of machinery, one thing i wonder about though. Is the radiator made extra super tough? If it would ever toss a rock or solid pieces of ice into a 'normal' car radiator the small 'flanges' would be bent instantly.

As with the majority of "world's first" claims these days, this is a long, LONG way from being the first. Finnish manufacturer Aurora Powertrains has been making electric snowmobiles they call eSleds since 2017. These are very cool and very welcome, but they are NOT the first.

Making? Aurora Powertrains has not made any sled, they have used an ordinary Lynx and simply replaced the gas engine with an electric motor and added a battery and some new stickers...

you probably should mention that gas snowmachines have a range of 200 miles while electic has 60. Also you can carry a gas can just in case. For a offroading vehicle, its not a good idea to go electric. Last time i checked, no tree has a tesla charger.

While the idea of this is cool and I'm all in on electric future the range is a huge issue for snowmobiles. a normal trail ride for me is a couple hundred miles through the back woods with super small pumps for sleds but no space to charge. I think hitting about 250 miles of range on a electric snowmobile will be a must as its not realistic to get charging stations out in the woods. it is exciting to see companies working on this but I think its going to be a small market for a long time.

Sled deck mount for the HumEV, and a pair of those on the back. Did you see if the backrest flipped forward like the old sleds did? That would make it super easy for Cambry to use. Brace against the backrest. Or “Jerryrig” a cool backrest, with heat. Pretty darn sweet Zack!

Don't really know what kind of snowmobiles you had, but modern fuel injected snowmobiles start very reliably and don't require much maintenance. Snowmobiles have large fuel tanks (40 liters) as gas stations can be very far apart, which is a massive problem for an electric snowmobile which severely limits where you can go. That's a problem as electric charging stations aren't right next to snowmobile paths.

The power is good, the power to weight ratio not so much. This is a great sled for staying and trails and doing work around a property. Climbing steep powdered covered mountains and weaving through the trees (not on groomed trails) will probably find you very stuck. Still I love the idea and would enjoy a day on a groomed trail with one!

It’s a good concept, but this isn’t practical or realistic for anybody besides people who have a huge property to ride on. Anyone that’s going on trails or going anywhere with it, especially in these remote locations that snowmobiles are used in, would not be able to find any charge location- ever. Im used to being able to load and throw these things around by myself, but a snowmobile that weighs like a tank is probably the worst one you could ever choose to ride on. Good luck maneuvering- at all. Anybody who’s rode for more than five minutes would realize that this tank would be an awful choice to ride on lol.

I like it! The price is high but I would think the competition is going to come and bring the price down - the competition will come. I really appreciate the vid - just a great job. A little concerned about the towing capacity - you have the weight AND the resistance of the snow - and going uphill in that terrain.
