The video shows the positive effects of the world's largest fog collector system built by the WaterFoundation in Morocco to supply the locals with clean water. The harvesting of clouds and fog has become an increasingly important technology in the worldwide search for new sources of drinking water. For over ten years, the WaterFoundation has been exploring the use of fog-collectors, supporting the work of the Munich industrial designer Peter Trautwein* in developing an entirely new type of collector.
The CloudFisher is the first production fog net capable of withstanding wind speeds of up to 120 kph. It is quickly and easily assembled, consumes no energy and requires very little maintenance. All the materials used are food-safe. The highly efficient CloudFisher system can supply people in many countries with cheap and clean drinking water. The water obtained in this way can also be used in farming and stockbreeding, in reforestation projects or in industry.

I have worked 30 years in Social work. I am Tired and burnt out. Horticulture has always been my first passion. Fog collecting is not exactly horticulture, but I really like the whole concept. Working outside with the elements. I am due to retire next year, with a small pension, and want to start a second career. This sounds interesting.

@@Jay_Kay666 often times people don't want to just sit around the whole time with their retirement. They've been used to working all day for decades and not doing anything at all besides simple gardening just doesn't sit right with most. That's why you often times see most retirees eventually going back to work, at least for a few years, or starting a new business. Because they just can't sit there and do nothing when they're so used to working. I know I wouldn't be able to just sit around doing nothing when I retire. Gardening just wouldn't cut it unless I was disabled.

Great iniative, however, the next step should be to build a system of swales, ponds and cathment systems to capture whatever rainfall they get this would allow them to plant fruit and nut trees along the edge of the swales. This would increase their food security and allow them to sell the surplus for a profit.

This is exactly what I was thinking. It seems very limiting to just stop at supplying water directly to households without addressing the larger issue of the barren terrain the Berbers find themselves in. I just finished watching Andrew Mollison's video series on the Paani foundation. There are some great initiatives happening everywhere.

They invented a device a few years ago which could be driven into the ground and it captured water from humidity. It could be used in deserts and capture enough water a day for a small village. Wonder what happened to that

That's not how this works. Fog are different from Rainfall. They don't get much rain, but they got tons of fogs. You can dig as much hole as you want, but fog is a better solution for them.

I have a farm in the middle Atlas mountains in Morocco , often we have fog but no rain , wonder where I can buy this mesh cause this could become a great way to harvest all that fog and use the water to irrigate the fruit trees I am growing...thank you

Trees would do a better job than a cloudfisher. Because the leaves of the trees, since they have moisture inside has a lower dew point. Which is required to turn fog into water. But for places that have no trees, you have no choice but to use cloudfisher. The basic principle is to use materials with the highest possible surface area. The higher the surface area, the more area where fog can land and collect and turn to droplets of water.

Honestly a plastic tarp would work, they just use netting to allow wind to pass through. You could probably cut some slits in a tarp to help with that. It's not a permanent solution like a good plastic net but it will get you started.

Why not promote the idea there, along with permaculture practices? Write an article for your local newspaper. Share videos on your social media. Go talk directly to farming communities. You can take action directly and make a difference yourself. Wouldn't that feel great, if you were able to help farmers be more productive and secure?

@@adilnourddine3929 Sure Adil, that will help dramatically. However, with drip system, a tree can be watered with 4 gallons per week. With the traditional method they are using, a tree requires 25 gallons / week.

Great report. The Canary PIne trees on the nearby island of La Palma work in the same way, The fog condenses on the pine needles and drips off as "horizontal rain". No problem with rain here in North Wales, UK. We get too much rain

Amazing, but why not go step ahead and plant some trees around and water them too with drip irrigation from collected water. Over time trees will create its own mini environment and improve soil conditions. Any new invention must be useful for everyone, trees, animals, birds, not humans only.

Arid lands are not fertile. The soil composition are lacking in organic materials and minerals. Look at all those bushes. Some of those are trees that became bonsai.

cover the soil around the plants with sow dust , wood chips, coconut husks, hay leaves . They absorb the water and retain it for longer period . If a plastic cover or sheet is put on top of the leaves and hay , straw, the water will not evaporate quickly .

I see SO much water being wasted here! The boy drinking out of the tap, with most of the water just passing his mouth, the people spraying it on their plants with a hose . . . Why not teach them some sensible water conservation habits?! People should be drinking from glasses or cups, so that none is wasted down the drain. Irrigation should be through things like terracotta olla, buried among the plants, instead of being lost to evaporation and wetting the surface soils far from the plant's roots.

Seems like this works as a quick, small scale solution. But arid lands like these needs permaculture or agriforestry to truly come back on it's feet. Nets that produce drinking water without any energy input should be considered as magic indeed.

If I was wealthy this is what I would spend my money on. It would feel amazing to be able to help so many people. I can't imagine being in the 1 percent and living in mega mansions and not helping people who desperately need help. Wonder if they use recycling to produce the nets? Huge areas could be terraformed if this system was done on a large scale. Very interesting. Water security would make the world a much safer place.

No, you are simply wrong about that claim. Huge areas can't be terraformed with this system, and they'd make almost no difference to the world's water supply. They rely on high atmospheric moisture levels, and in deserts that only occurs at the coast. Indeed, it's even more restricted than that, because it only occurs where there is an onshore wind. The coast of the Namib, and the west coast of the Sahara in Mauritania, Western Sahara, and Morocco might get some useful benefit, but 20 miles inland there would be zero benefit. The Sahara is the best part of 3000 miles across, so a little 20 mile strip makes no meaningful difference.

Now, the cloudfisher was successful in collecting water. Dont you think that the next step is teaching the people to utilize used waste water for other usage? Instead of dumping in the drain. The toilet waste water can be channeled to bio-digester and its outlet be used to water crops, and same with sink waste water.

Even if you decide to wash those nets once a year then what is that to all the thousands of gallons you received. Are you lazy or pessimistic ? What if...........?

sebenarnya dg byk pohon bisa membuat desa tsb byk air tapi bisa jadi sdh ditebang dan ide menanam kembali tdk ada krn merasa itu tdk berguna cmiiw
