Brilliant review of a difficult book. I think it bore the weight of having fascinating facts and less fascinating fiction. The beginning two sections were certainly the strongest and yet had me re-reading the jacket to make sure this was in the fiction category. Labatut is certainly making a case for questioning the limitations of our imagination and how far we should go before we destroy ourselves. He aptly questions the beauty of destruction and the pain of limitations yet does not have the prodigious imagination required to elevate the ideas beyond mere fascination with outcomes that flow from human curiosity with science, and technology when untethered from own humanity.

When We Cease To Apprehend The Moth. (Loved this, by the way- this is one of the books I've been most looking forward to, and I really enjoyed how you describe it, even if every time you say 'in The Night Gardener', my mind jumps in before the final syllable, and I just think of that creepy kids' programme)

I waited to finish the book to check your review. I absolutely feel you! I had the same reaction with Tokarczuk’s Flights. This one was a solid turn pager for me and I hated physics and chemistry classes in high school.

It's a mind-blowing set of short stories, it was hard at times to figure out where fact swerved into fiction and visa versa. Very clever, only one of the prize that was available at my local library, it will be interesting to see if it's the winning goods. BTW any ideas when they are announcing The 2021 Booker longlist? I can't find anything about dates online.

This was such an interesting review! I don’t think I would enjoy the book, but it does sounds fascinating.

This was a far out read and I loved it. Even if you can’t make it through the whole book. Just read Prussian Blue and the last story about Heisenberg and quantum physics.

I gave up on this at about the 100 page mark 🙃

I am so pumped for this book, and at the same time so afraid that is going to let me down...

Firstly, don't like the book's title. Secondly, a non-fiction novel sounds so silly lol. Great review as always.

This is my next read so imma stop watching till I am done with the book
