The reason I will never read Attachments is because of the stalker element. Like everyone on booktube is "so feminist" where they want to erase the damsel in distress trope (which is my brand of trash, I am completely trash for the damsel in distress so when people try to get rid of it it pisses me off, I'm not trying to get rid of your favourite bad trope) yet everyone loves a love story about a literal stalker? It makes no sense to me. Also, I HATE the plain girl trope. To dress up for an important event or date she does one coat of mascara and puts on some lipgloss and it completely transforms her because she's wearing so much makeup. Give me an MC that wears a smoky eye on the daily, for fuck sakes.

A great stalker novel is You by Caroline Kepnes. The female that is being stalked is in no way a damsel in distress and in many ways so unloveable and horrible it's interesting. It's definitely refreshing.

Damn, please do a reasons for disliking YA video. I feel like so many people around here are too nervous to move away from YA books because nobody says anything negative about them! Shout them truths!
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox 6 жыл бұрын
I'll edit my comment since the other person deleted hers. I think the problem is that a lot of publishing companies are pushing YA books to be reviewed :/ We see them everywhere and everyone seems excited so we get them and then... most of them aren't that great! That's all I've been offered as ARCs so far and 99% of them I wasn't interested!
@PlotsAndPoints
@PlotsAndPoints 6 жыл бұрын
BookswithEmilyFox 100% agree. I don't even hate all YA books (I just say I do for comic effect). The truth is they're the popular thing so everyone gets all hyped up about them, it doesn't bother me that people really do enjoy YA books. It's just fun to see some 'controverisal' videos and I think you'd make a great video on the topic :)

I also heard from a Booktuber that they get fewer views if they don't limit themselves to good reviews of YA. Is that a pressure point for you?
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't been giving them good reviews as a whole so far (some were great and are in my best of coming Friday!) and I think my views are doing just fine! I get that their main audience is younger but it's a two-edged sword. The more positive reviews you do about YA books, the more you'll attract younger viewers and the more younger viewers you have, the more positive reviews they'll expect. My audience is like 80% 18-34... I think no one expects me to be positive if I'm not which is great! Also this channel is a second channel so I don't have too much pressure for its growth :)

The reason people say that ACOTAR is a beauty and the beast retelling is because that's what Sarah J Maas was saying when it was being published. I can see the elements she pulled from Beauty and the Beast, but she honestly didn't do that great of a job. She should not have claimed it was a retelling because I agree with you, it's not. Also, I hate Tamlin, and I continued to hate Tamlin throughout the series. Great Video!

I remember when people were talking about how Dimple is always hitting Rishi and defending her by saying, “Oh, she’s just a teenage girl!” If it was the other way around NO ONE would be saying, “Oh, he’s just a teenage boy!” They would (rightfully so) be freaking the hell out!

It didn't make mine but I thought it was okay at best. Even if I had wanted to read it for the romance, which I didn't so there's that, I thought it hit every possible cliché of the genre and was way too predictable. And the ending pissed me off. Overall: not too bad, but definitely not worth the hype.

I'm 16 and I've read like 50 YA books this year and after 30 I already was done with them, especially with YA contemporary, I have the feeling I'm reading the same book every time. Ofcourse there are exceptions but I'm kinda done with only liking 1 YA book out of the 10 I read.. I love the fact that you actually dislike a lot of YA books too and talk about them, because sometimes it feels like every booktuber only talks about YA and how great it is(like, how can you read 300 YA books and still end up loving them all?!)

I have to agree with the "try to avoid YA contemporary"... it's won't end well. (Maybe only the ones which sound super unique) And maybe try to read some more adult books in 2018. YA just gets boring after a while, since you read recycled books and ideas over and over. I, for example, like to bring variety into my reading schedule by mixing in adult fantasy (high/epic fantasy), classics and poetry.

It's unfortunate that people don't trust partnerships. I've done some on my beauty channel and only ever accept things I love with companies I love. I'm not sure how different things are with books but I'm not planning on raving about books I don't like. If that costs me sponsorships then so be it! (I'm not accusing anyone of lying but I do think some might be "easy to please readers" and it would be nice to get more critics. However, I don't know how publishing companies react to that)

I don’t trust partnerships because of this reason. There have been so many instances when a lot people disclose their partnership and rave about books but when people who are not partnered review the book they always say that they don’t get the hype and book is mediocre or really bad. And it’s always the latest “it” YA book.

Throne of Glass. Honestly I did not get along with that book. I didn't care about Celaena or the two love interests or the champions or the weird things happening. I just didn't care. I'm told it gets better as the series goes along so I may push through with the others to see if I can get along with the series overall. Aww The Gunslinger is a bad start to the The Dark Tower series though IMO. It gets so much better in the second book, but I can see why a lot of people stop reading it because of the first one. :(

I've read a few of these and loved them, and also really want to read a few of the others you mentioned, but I LOVE how passionate you are in your dislike for these LOL I respect how honest you are. You made some really good points with all these books and I can totally see how you dislike the ones I've read too. Looking forward to that YA book rant because I know there will be quite a few books that I'm sure I've read and enjoyed before, but look forward to hearing your thoughts xD

Exactly! And it bothers me to see that some people try and push their ideas onto others when the beauty of the book community is how different our tastes and perceptions of books are.

Emily, have you read The Throne of Glass series by SJ Maas? I'm new to your book channel & am binging your videos, so sorry if you've already spoken about it. I was kinda bored/unimpressed until book 3, but once the magic showed up I was hooked. IMO each book has progressively gotten better, bc they've also gotten faster & more exciting. Since then I've read books 3-5 at least 2x a year (once each new book comes out). I tried to read Chaol's book (I hate him, but tried anyway) but was so freaking bored I couldn't make myself read it. RN I'm waiting for Heart on Fire by Amanda Bouchet to be released on Jan 2. It's a light-hearted, easy fantasy romance series (so warning if you don't like romance) but I find it so fun bc it's got the old Roman Gods/Goddesses, Magic & a smart-mouthed heroine. Def wins for being fun, unique & addictive. Until then, idk what I'll read. 🤔 I’ve read an embarrassing # of books this year (>300🤓) so I may need a break Bc I’m getting bored & just want fun RN.

BookswithEmilyFox I completely get what you’re saying. The only reason I trudged through the first couple books was Bc I had friends who were nagging me to read them so we could talk. 😜 I’ve only read those books 1 more time since then, usually I pretend the series started at Heir of Fire. ☺️ Same with ACOTAR. I HATED Tamlin & the way Feyre acted with him. So I just re-read book 2. Merry Christmas Eve! I assume y’all have a bunch of snow up there? We got snow down here (Missouri) for the first time all year & I’m psyched! We haven’t had a white Christmas since 2010.

I'm an avid Stephen King reader and it took me a couple years to actually continue the series after not enjoying The Gunslinger. After being encouraged by multiple people that the second book is very different, I read it. I'm on the fourth book now and I definitely agree that it gets better after the first one. I wouldn't rush it though, there are so many other great King books to fill your time 😊

The dark tower was recommended to me a few years ago and I had a rough time with the first book too. I'm currently at the beginning of the second book, but so far I'm still not impressed. But, I will try to continue, because i really value the opion of the person who recommended the dark tower to me. If it gets better I'll let you know.

I finished re-read of The Wrath and the Dawn today and I lowered my rating on Goodreads. I didn´t like it as much as the first time. A was not planning to read it again but I finally got the second book and I found out that I can´t remember a lot from the first book which I was reading in April. Thanks God it is just a duology. My worst books of 2017 : 1) Neal Shusterman - Unwind 2) whole Selection series (5 books) 3) E. Lockhart - We were liars 4) Courtney Summers - Cracked Up to Be 5) J.K. Rowling - The Tales of Beedle the Bard 6) Victoria Aveyard - Red Queen + Glass Sword 7) Lars Kepler - The Rabbit Hunter (Swedish crime novel/detective story) 8) Samuel Bjork - The Owl Always Hunts at Night (Norwegian detective story) 9) Rainbow Rowell - Eleanor & Park 10) Tokyo Ghoul vol. 1 and some more.

I will say that when I read the gunslinger I was also luke warm on it until I read the drawing of the three which is unfathomablely better than the first one, to the point that I doubted the fact that these books were written together, and then, I went back and reread the gunslinger and for some reason I now think its brilliance incarnate perhaps its context perhaps I finally got in the right mindset for it.

I have to say that Dimple meets Rishi synopsis just directly threw me off cause I felt so strongly that is was going to end "well" and just wrapping it up like "oh but finally the guy my parents choose is great" and is so bad because people are really forced into marriage and making it seem like "oh but.." and I'm not sure how much the author knows about the situation and maybe is just using asian/indian people just for diversity and representation without understanding the cultural background.. I'm maybe wrong but that is what I got from only the plot and watching reviews i feel that i'm not far from the truth.. I have to disagree with Mara's level of spanish it was said that she used to be good, but with the stress of the teacher (wich happens i went trough that situation) she shuted herself down. That romance tought... beuuuuuurk. Is it tripping by saying that the trilogy could have been one book if you skipped that romance wich is.. no words

actually sandhya menon is indian american herself and so knows a lot about that situation i guess? but i agree with u. i'm desi myself, and i was SO excited to have a strong female character who didnt agree with tradition of arranged marriage but like!!!! she completely ruined it! having her fall in love with the dude shes being forced to marry is literally what our culture pushes. we are supposed to marry exactly who our parents want bc they know best and dimple, for all her woke personality, succumbs to the tradition im SOO TIRED
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox 6 жыл бұрын
That was my issue too! When I expressed it in the past I got a few comments saying I was too negative about arrange marriage but... Dimple DIDN'T want one! It would have been nice to actually see a girl choose her passion instead of doing what her parents wanted :/

Ellie I wasn't sure about it, thank you for making a point ! Yeah it deranges me a bit I just don't understand why she pushed it that way... I know that some arrange marriage do end well and people love and respect each other for the rest of their lives but the fact that there is such a counterpart next to it..
@Elliterally
@Elliterally 6 жыл бұрын
the truth is in indian culture there has never been a popular story of a girl fighting against tradition. by the end, she admits that her parents were right and i was just so excited for this, you know? it's FINE to have *one* story where the girl chooses who she wants to marry it won't end all indian culture ever. esp in this world where we're surrounded by people who aren't all indian like obviously theres going to be times when we're going to be into people who don't look like you and that's cool, too
@someonerandom8552

I like that there's an automatic assumption that just because the arranged marriage works out, the author doesn't understand the culture. That IS the culture. There's arranged marriage and forced marriage. Not every arranged marriage is forced but all forced marriages are arranged, if that makes sense? Stories that put arranged vs love marriages in a battle only to agree with the arranged aspect are pretty much dime a dozen in Bollywood. Because that's what audiences like I guess (to be fair, I haven't seen a Bollywood movie in a while so that could have changed. I dunno.) But I do agree with you on the ending. Why Dimple? Just....Why?!

I would love to see a YA rant video. I have watched so many videos praising books and then critiquing books that are basically the same type of book (i.e Attachment) and would love a video about that! Also, I think it would be cool to see a video where you take some popular YA books and show an adult contemporary book that is similar or like a "if you like this book read this one"
