For Confessions, it is worth noting that it was translated from Japanese, and in Japanese, it's considered rude/impolite to express big emotions when speaking to someone you don't know very well. So for a teacher addressing her students, the fact that she doesn't show too much emotion is actually probably a translation issue more than anything else--for the original Japanese audience, they'd be like "Yes, this is precisely how a teacher talks about something like this to her students."

Thank you, someone else who doesn’t understand the appeal of the “Practical Magic” book! There was SO MUCH exposition and random character profiles, and Sally falls so quickly in love with Gary. So much more seemed to be told than shown, and it made the book feel so flat and unimpressive.

I read Practical Magic and had the exact same reaction as you. And then I read a book called Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen and it was everything that Practical Magic should have been. It was honestly closer to the movie than the eponymous book.

Thank you Lianne! You saved me from reading a few books that were on my to-read list. I disliked Practical Magic too and am glad you read it. I read The Passage this year and forced myself to finish it on audio. I fell in love with the characters at the beginning and then suddenly a quarter through the book we jump 100 years into the future and those characters are replaced by people I didn't care about. Like you said in one video, "Just kill them all off, I don't care." Love you! 🧂

🧂My 3 Worst Of 2022 were "The Emperor's Blades" by Brian Staveley (fantasy, hugely misogynistic, lots of plot conveniences) "Murder at the Fitzwilliam" by Jim Eldridge (historical mystery, only 1 possible suspect, performative anachronistic male feminism) "Death in August" by Marco Vichi (translated, police procedural, unthinking toxic masculinity)

I love your salty videos :D Oh I hated Nothing But Blackened Teeth. It made me so angry uuugh! Thanks to you i have now removed Confessions and Come Closer from my to-buy list. I think my worst books of 2022 were The Ruins by Phoebe Wynn and Murder on the Christmas Express by Alexandra Benedict. But there were quite a lot of other bad books that I read in 2022 so it wasn’t a great reading year for me 😅

Your take on Practical Magic sums up a lot of how I felt about it, but at the time, I forgave it a lot--it was the very first audiobook I ever listened to, way back in the mid to late 90's, which must have been shortly after it was released on audio. I thought it was a neat experience to listen to a story while doing other things with my eyes. But I do remember the book being a lot more depressing than the movie, which is probably why I never went back and re-read it after falling for the film. 😄 The worst book I finished was probably "Sea Star: Orphan of Chincoteague," which I had read as a child and upon re-reading was reminded of why I stopped reading the "Misty" books back then. 🧂

🧂Sistersong is my worst book of the year. It started okay but then took a twist that is in the original myth which made absolutely no sense in the context of the story. Some forboding was required. Some idea that this was possible in this world! If you're doing a myth retelling, and changing a bunch of things already, at least make the plot make sense! It honestly still makes me angry. Thank you for the rant, as ever, I loved it. I hope your 2023 treats you infinitely better.

I'm so relieved to find someone who had the same problems with Nicci French that I did. Like you, I kept giving another book a chance- I landed up reading the entire Frieda Klein series, along with a couple of standalones :) Similar to what you said, the protagonists tend to say and do whatever they want regardless of logic and logistics. And they're unlikable in very...unlikable way. I didn't appreciate the way they wrote dialogue either- it always felt unrealistic, and all this meant that I never actually rooted for the protagonist. The only book I found bearable was Beneath the Skin. It is a standalone and was better than the others (but still, to me, not the best thriller). As always, you're a joy to watch!

I've not really read any books I felt were awful but quite a few in the meh category which is why I'm so thrilled to have the Discworld readalong - I just finished the first novel and started the second - I'm hoping I can read some other books too tho and I don't mind if it takes me longer than the 'allotted' (as I've said before, I don't read nearly as fast most other people!)

🧂 I would almost say The Inheritance Games as well, but I read it right after One of Us is Lying which was way worse imo. Another was The Whispering Dark, written by a Deaf author about a deaf protagonist. I’m becoming more and more involved in the Deaf Community, so I was excited about this. Turns out it was very little to do with the Deaf experience tagged onto Watpad writing. I DNFed it.

My three worst books for 2022 were all ones I went into with high hopes, and then was severely disappointed. They were 3. This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone 2. The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton (I read this one for a book club, and we all hated it.) 1. The Past Is Red by Catherynne M. Valente (I have discovered with Valente that I either love her work or hate it, with nothing in between. Unfortunately, this was on the hate side.)

🧂😃Thanks, for the heads up! The book I read that I didn't love was Bodies, Baddies and a Crabby Tabby by Sherri Bryan. It had a lot going on it to keep up with.....I mean besides the murders that took place in the book, there was the back story about the cat that shows up at the parents house that ends up involving a neighbor (not the killer) and then that person involved with the cat had their own backstory as to why the cat was involved....and then you have the backstory of the actual killer (involves a different neighbor) and the backstory of the victims that results in the reason behind them getting whacked. It was an okay read I didn't hate it but there was just too much to keep up with to actually enjoy. Just wasn't my cup of tea but it could be for someone else.

And I have also tried the Practical Magic train, and tried to read the prequel, and disliked that so much that I did not finish it. I almost never DNF, so that's saying something. The worst book that I have actually finished though was Year of Wonder: Classical Music to Enjoy Day by Day by Clemency Burton-Hill, which I read one chapter per day, and listening to the piece of classical music that it recommended. The amount of time it took for my autistic self to realize "pepperoni" wasn't actually pepperoni...jeez. LOL!! I was so confused for a moment!! LMAO For me...worst of the year: HEX by Thomas Olde Heuvelt, Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne, Nothing But Blackened Teeth, and Suicide Forest by Jeremy Bates 🧂

As always, I love your salty opinions. I have all four books in the "Practical Magic" series and have changed quite a bit since I read the first one (I haven't read the others), so it will be interesting to see how that goes. I also have "Nothing But Blackened Teeth" - it was a gift from a friend and I haven't read it yet. "The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse" was all anyone was talking about in December, so I decided to give it a go. Long story short, I am glad I found the audio book and was able to listen for free because it was a tremendous disappointment. A bunch of so-called "inspirational" quotes that you find on those memes posted here and there that leave you wondering why the heck you follow that person. There's no depth, no originality, and it's trying far too hard to be "The Little Prince". Trust me, go read (or re-read, as the case may be) that book instead. You'll be better off.

🧂 worst book of the year was … hang on while I look up my goodreads 1 star reads…Portrait of a Thief by Grace Li. It should have been a dnf as 50%.

The worst book of 2022 for me is a draw between The Maid by Nita Prose and Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. I am a chemist myself and I DNFed this one.

Lessons in Chemistry was one of my favorite books of the year, so I would LOVE to hear why you hated it.

@@catynatt8198 The main one is that I am a qualified chemist and Elizabeth is a person who would be absolutely hated in the chemistry lab. The start of the book was extremely graphic with the constant grapes and abuse, and abuse of younger people was that really needed?. I have never used a cyclon in a chemistry lab and still use salt and vinegar even as a chemist. She could've done better research; many of us scientists are not happy with the book that Bonnie wrote. An incident I remember is a conversation when Elizabeth mentions that she doesn't eat a can of soup as it is full of chemicals. A true chemist like myself knows everything is made of chemicals. How did you love it so much?

@@ametrinemoon I had the same thought about the can of soup! That did bug me. I am not a chemist or scientist of any kind, so I wouldn’t be able to spot the inaccuracies. I was focused on the interpersonal relationships and feminine empowerment. Plus there was a dog and who doesn’t love that? It did end too neatly and a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief was needed, but the world in general has been so bleak for years that I didn’t care.

How to kill your family was my most disappointing book of 2022 - but mostly because of the ending not the main character!

🧂🧂🧂 now we just need some lemons and tequila. 🤣 Had to check my GR but apparently I had only 2 books I gave a 1 star rating to. One was It Didn't Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark Wolynn. That book was quack which was disappointing because the topic is really interesting.💩 The other was the first volume of a Japanese light novel series (娘じゃなくて私が好きなの!? aka You Like Me, Not My Daughter?!) where the cover screams "men's wet dream" but people assured me it was a wholesome lovestory and women would enjoy it to. No, no, no. That book is not just a man's wet dream, it's an incel's wet dream. 💩💩💩
