I bought two of these and they were very different inside. There is no receptacle for the transistor. All three leads of your device must be exactly the same length and very straight to simultaneously hit the gold pads on the PCB. With some modifications I was able to achieve near perfect readings on all settings, but I would not expect the average user to be able to do these procedures. Instead I would recommend the XL830L which I have four. These don’t need adjustments and arrive in better condition.

The first one of these I bought many years ago did have a small fuse inside for the DC mA range. Later units did not, presumably to save a few cents. The 10 amp range is not fused but not to worry, if you overload it, the probe wires will melt to break the circuit 8). The probe wires are so cheap, I'm concerned using them even for 120V. Most of the time I'm just using this meter for checking 12VDC stuff, the current drawn by small devices or testing continuity. They are cheap enough to have several laying around.

The multimeter is based on the ICL7106 and variants. This IC came out in the 1980s and measures 200mV, has 3½ digits, an LCD or LED display and can be powered by a 9v battery. Disadvantage: Battery minus must not be connected to the minus measuring line. It cannot measure its own battery. The ICL7116 also has a hold function. Today the IC is no longer offered in a DIP housing but is placed directly on the circuit board under a black blob. The typical range is 0.2V 2V 20V 200V ... The poor measurement results come about because cheap, uncalibrated resistors are used. There is always a drop of 200mV in the ampere range, which is why the measuring device falsifies the measurement at small currents. On the other hand, it can only withstand 10A for a few minutes, then the internal shunt gets too hot. The multimeter does not have an overload protection. Measuring voltage over 100V with it is risky. Very thin plastic. Summary: a guessing iron The IC alone with good calibrated resistors is usable.
