The spikes wasnt close enough to impale you in iron maidens. They either didn't touch you or just piercing the skin... Depending on your size. The torture was leaving you there, unable to move without getting impaled. Sooner or later you'd collapse into the spikes. The whole "instantly killed"-thing is from movies and games.
