It features circus and trapeze acts, as well as carnival games, at its Carnival Midway. The resort also includes the Adventuredome, an indoor amusement park. BUT it's also not been getting very good reviews on Tripadvisor! Is it that bad .... let's find out!

I spent ten years in hospitality, and so much of this could be addressed with just having enough housekeeping and engineering on staff. Things that are obviously very dirty not getting cleaned (despite maybe taking a minute to do it) suggests that the hotel staff have just given up. Maybe the renovation that they announced in July of last year led them to telling staff not to worry about it, but that's a terrible route to go if you want any return business.

That's the problem of many big hotels these days - it's just hardly feasible to invest into refurbishment which costs absolutely huge money. Also the staff. Temporary contractors are very expensive, and on the other hand the in-house maintenance team is usually very small and on close to minimum wage - they can't be expected to bother too much. Often it's easier and cheaper to build a brand new hotel than refurbishing an old one.

We stayed in Circus Circus about 15 or so years ago. Even then, it wasn't high end --- but it was kept clean. Considering how high the resort fees have gotten, there is just no excuse. I think the smell you noticed was stale cigarette smoke. Many of the "old school" Vegas casinos are absolutely infused with it. I'm not sure they can get rid of it, short of tearing out the actual walls.

As someone who has worked in housekeeping, this is 100% a management/staffing issue. The only way to even approach fixing this is to hire more on-site handymen and maybe double the housekeeping staff. In my experience, hotels are more worried about having more "clean" rooms on hand for last-minute reservations than a good quality clean for guests who have booked in advance. Not only that, but i would assume they're cheaping out on laundry services and cleaning products. It's really sad to see such a fun and interesting concept for a hotel and staple of the city fall into disrepair :(

Vegas native here! It's Phil Ruffin, the owner of the property. He's a glorified slumlord. He's also the owner of Treasure Island and that property isn't exactly high-class even if relatively well maintained.. Plus he owns 50% of Trump tower which... I mean... Trump tower... Phil bought the property in 2020 and has done almost nothing since. However, Adventuredome has been cleaned up and is apparently far better than before. Before that MGM Grand owned it since 2005 and planned a renovation until the recession hit, then kind of just abandoned the place. And before that Bill Bennett and William Pennington owned it since 1983 and were responsible for it's massive expansion from just a small casino to a hotel, adventure park, and bigger attractions.

I'd claim that she was vulnerable when she signed it or in a vulnerable state such as depression, anxiety, anything that could make her vulnerable and unable to make an informed decision at that specific time such as a limited capacity which would make the signed waiver redundant ... asbestos lung cancer is a mesothelioma. There are loop holes in everything. All risks should be made clear with health and safety advice issued both verbally and in written form. The company should have sealed off specific areas to try to contain as much air borne asbestos as possible when working with it and staff should not be allowed into sealed areas.

@@christopherswanson1628 signing waivers doesn't really exempt a entity from liability. It makes it difficult, but the establishment/individual is still responsible for safe practices. For example a Zoo. Everyone knows there are dangerous animals. It's the zoo's responsibility to keep its staff/guess safe. If someone breaks in or surpasses the safety protocols put out in place. The individual is responsible for any damages. However if the guest or staff is hurt in any way that could be preventable then the Zoo can be held liable. The same concept applies here. If you sign the waiver then the establishment is responsible for your safety by providing the proper measures for preventive harm. Especially if it's stated you are in a dangerous area.

I think the circus theme is really cool and unique there's tons of potential there, someone just needs to take over and redo the entire place. Deep clean everything, replace carpets and fabrics, brighten up the common spaces with new (and brightly colored!) paint and wallpaper, polish up the fixtures, renovate the rooms- a muted retro feeling pastel 50s or brownish 60s theme with updated fixtures would be appropriate here, so guests can relax after the circus themed chaos outside! It’d take probably more cash than it’s worth but it’d be a neat retro theme hotel. Especially if you put old school soda and burger shops (in the style of Winstead’s) and maybe like make the parking lot drive-in movie theater themed? Keep the arcade and casino areas bright and flashy, keep the circus shows, maybe have a few characters or clowns running around, and theme the little convenience stores like a circus concession stand. Seems like you’d pick up the niche market of grandparents staying with the grandkids while the parents went off and had Vegas Fun elsewhere. Maybe have a clown do the weddings in a big top themed wedding chapel just for the unique photo op!

Circus Circus was the first hotel I ever stayed in. I'm 67 and was around 13 or 14 when I went with my best friend's family to Las Vegas. It was the ONLY hotel in Vegas that had any activities for children besides a pool. The circus acts over the casino floor were fun. The arcade games were fun and free. I actually got to see Elvis on that trip. He didn't impress me as much as the water pistol shooting into the clown's mouth arcade game did. (I was a Beatles fan).😊 It's sad that it has become so run down. Perhaps they should implode it and build another family/kid friendly hotel in it's place. Vegas tried for a while to induce families to visit, but has gone back to adult only themes. It's not really a kid friendly place but there should be one hotel where kids can play too.

Yeah I’ve been going there for 40 years. My dad would stay there because of what you said, it was “family friendly”. Also… if you don’t stay at the Circus Circus Motor Lodge, then you stayed at the “fancy” part. What always strikes me is the ultra thick carpet and other fabrics and materials that have been soaking in the “flavor” of millions of people over many decades. And remember how much around the clock smoke and buffet and kids smells… you can actually taste it. Compare it to modern places (and everywhere I stay overseas) who use very little carpeting or textiles that will hold odors. My favorite places in SE Asia make great use of finished concrete for floors, minimalist bedding where they just keep it cleaned and bleached and places are really cheap, sterile feeling that i find comfortable. It’s really spoiled me. Totally the opposite of a 80 year old US casino. 555

@@Hestia134 well , it is a building by building case. Concrete ( I assume yiu see more wooden structures ) , has an estimated life span of 70-120 years. It requires maintenance against rebar rust, water seepage. Good old buildings with proper periodic maintenance can sustain longer life span. Also, brick walls need consideration. Clay bricks always beat cinder blocks. They have excelent refractory properties , and tend to resist humidity better. Older buildings tend to feature brick walls. My last stateside sale, a three family in East Boston , the buyer , an investor/ partner wanted to see the property, which was derelict. He went past cosmetics , and asked to see the basement , which was structurally intact. They made an offer in the same day. A few years forward , I brokered a fee simple building in São Paulo, Brazil , by the Se Cathedral Square. Beaux Arts , corner building , miniscule floor plate footage, circa 1926, about 14,000 sq ft., 14 stories with the corner store . Very low price, a gimmie. We traded numbers with the eager seller , and the buyer asked for a second viewing after we settled on the figure. Since he went solo, I asked him to take snapshots of the basement and bring them to me. After I realize the structural damage I told the buyer we only would proceed if he hired an structural engineer to write a report and vouch for the go ahead. He is due to spend more on repairs than what he paid for the acquisition. I told him so. Done deal. Lastly , older buildings tend to have high ceiling clearances and larger window frames. When originally built , this was a trick by architects to keep interiors cooler on hot summer days. Back in those days , air conditioning did not exist , so architects had to be more resourceful. I hope it helps.

The "grits" was actually "hash" - corned beef and potatoes (which looked pretty good). If they had grits it would have been with the oatmeal, which I didn't see. On another note, my first of over 40 trips to Vegas was Circus Circus in the late 90's and it was a dump back then. Because of that experience, that was the first and last time a travel agent was used to put a package together for myself. Bless the Internet for being able to book everything on your own.

@karlwithak. That is 100% not grits he was eating its corned beef hash. If made at home it is corned beef and potatoes leftover from the day before, chopped up and refried. Hash in the US usually refers to a style of preparing breakfast potatoes, or a type of drugs I'm sure you're familiar with. I LOVED the children's arcade, the teddy bears you could win were high quality (and easy to win, no scams). I just passed one of the teddy bears I kept onto my 3yo daughter. Very happy memories. It was always one of the cheapest & most basic hotels on the strip, but for families it was ideal & it's so sad they haven't kept up with the cleanliness & hygiene of the place.

When I went to the Circus Circus I was just there for the rides. I was an amusement ride operator at another park and wanted to get on their roller coaster... Vegas was on my drive between home and university and I popped in to get on some rides. I was actually pretty impressed with the quality of operations, cleanliness, and safety at the theme park. Maintenance was working on a ride whose brakes wouldn't cooperate, but that happens more often than you'd think. Also, it was clearly caught by ops during their opening checklist, and the fact that they were listened to when they brought up a safety concern made me feel safer about everything else in the park. The other rides were in great condition. Really interesting lineup of flats in addition to their main flagship coasters. The ride at 9:57 is a Zamperla NebulaZ, which was only introduced in 2019, so that thing has to be basically brand new. Being an indoor park means some parts of the rides are going to be easier to maintain than at my own outdoor park, but I was still really amazed with how well their rides were running, especially the old ones. Canyon Blaster is one of the better-maintained out of other rides of its type, it's a little rough in some parts but all Arrow loopers are. With that said, though, the rest of the hotel felt really filthy even to just walk through to get to the Adventuredome. I'm glad they're putting their money towards safe park operations, because that's the kind of thing that can kill people if they mess it up. But I swear to god, every ride enthusiast I've ever talked to who wants to go to Vegas to hit up the coasters, I have to talk them out of staying at the Circus Circus just to get on the coasters faster. Maybe I'll just send them this video lol. I think the rides here get a bad rep for a couple of reasons. One, Vegas has a spotty history with coasters, if you've read about the history of Big Apple Coaster (and Togo's history in general) you'll know what I'm talking about. (Personally, I didn't think Big Apple was standout-shaky, and I've been on much more beloved rides that are shakier, but it's a shaky ride for sure.) The other is that the whole hotel is in such disrepair that people expect that to extend to the rides, and it just doesn't. The park gets a pass from me for safe maintenance and operations, and it's amazingly clean for a theme park, let alone when you compare it to the rest of the hotel. Really great video - it's interesting to see how many cool ideas this place has outside of the rides. It's a shame it's too unclean to really capitalize on that.

Great comment! I was also surprised by how clean the park looked. Went to six flags magic mountain in summer of 2023, which being from SoCal I used to go to all the time growing up and was taken aback by how poorly maintained a lot of it was. From a non-enthusiast perspective I didn’t notice anything wrong with the rides but the park was really dirty, lots of stuff not open, all the attempts at theming were really rundown. It’s never been the cleanest park but it definitely wasn’t that bad in the 2000s and early 2010s. That said I was just surprised that the park at circus circus of all places looked so much cleaner and better maintained than a well known amusement park. I guess it being indoors and much smaller compared to a park like magic mountain would make it easier to maintain though. Still with the way they treat the rest of the hotel it was surprising. They must be putting a lot of effort into that park / banking on it to be big draw for guests.

Door plate won't keep you safe if the door opens and someone wants in. That is called "security theater", like the TSA, or a chain on a door. People think it makes them safe or keeps people out, but all it takes is one person that doesn't abide by society's rules, in order to get in once the door is opened. That is why you never open the door in a situation like that, if it is the middle of the night & someone you don't recognize (who isn't definitely from the hotel) comes to your room. They won't be able to kick in the door with the little extra lock and you can communicate through the door. Some people may think that's goofy, but you need to be aware of when danger most happens.

Stayed there in '73, it was spanking new feeling, I was about 11 - 12, on a trip with other kids. We had the hugest blast. Running all around while acrobats sailed thru the air...there was a blingy restaraunt that was dark and misty with plats and little pods where you ate, filled with tiny bridges and waterways, it was hidden from the other attractions, sort of around the corner from the carnival ~ it felt like a secret.

Ya wow!..... I remember CLEARLY being in the military in the mid-80's and would LOOOOVE riding my motorcycle to the strip and stopping at the Circus Circus and eating at their Buffett. This is what I clearly remember.... The prices of the Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner has changed a bit. I remember standing in front of the price poster of the meals, here's what I remember; All you can eat -- Breakfast - $1.49 Lunch - $2.49 Dinner - $3.49 Those prices were CHEAP even way back then! Just know, these casino's Buffett's can focus on one of two things, "Quantity" OR "Quality" ..... Circus Circus NEVER had ANY focus on Quality!!!..... The food "looked" good but all tasted like cardboard and just plain YUK! But being in the military, we ate about anything.

Minor technicality, but the movie Casino (and the book, "Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas," from which it was adapted) was actually based on the Stardust hotel, which was located near Circus Circus prior to its implosion in 2006. Circus Circus was, however, used extensively in the James Bond film "Diamonds are Forever" in addition to "Fear and Loathing." - Cheers

Being from Southern California, I have gone to Vegas many times. Our family stayed at Circus Circus a few times when it was new, and it was THE place to go. It was crazy when you walked around the arcade area, because it was familiar to me, 50 years later. I remember running around there and playing those same games when I was a kid. These days, we don't even bother going that far down the strip and prefer to stay in the center where we can walk just about everywhere we wish to go. Not in the summer, of course! BTW, aside from its age and lack of proper cleaning, my guess is that a lot of the stale odor comes from the decades of people smoking cigarettes anywhere and everywhere in the hotels. That, thankfully, has changed.

Former MGM employee here, back when Circus Circus was owned and operated by them. They don't invest in remodeling, refurbishing, or staffing because, as is, its a very profitable casino. Why bother if you're consistently in the green and enough people come anyways? The back room employee area looks like a set from the walking dead, excluding the hallway with the EDR which was fairly nice.

While I would like to see SOME sort of updates - I have tried to tell people this. Circus Circus knows what they are, so don't freaking touch it. Great review! What makes Vegas interesting is that it has a mixture of five star properties and also some dumpy properties. If you can put up with it, you can save a lot of money at the lower end properties. Next-door to Circus Circus is a small casino called Slots-A- Fun and it’s sort of dingy and old but it has a lot of character and I always go there every time I go to Vegas

When I moved to Las Vegas in the mid-90s, Circus Circus wasn't too bad. It was the only family-friendly hotel on the Strip and you could get a clean, decent room for a bargain. The Adventure Dome and The Steak House were popular for the locals as well. Over time, it got so seedy that I refused to go near it. By the time I left Vegas in 2015, most of the original Strip hotels had been imploded or highly renovated. I can't believe this one is still standing. It's beyond salvaging, imo.

Just a nope for me. My parents took me and my brother in August of 1993, right when the Adventure Dome opened. No lines, everything well built and clean, cheap prices, unlimited amounts of rides. My brother and I rode that roller coaster over and over for a full hour because no one was in line! It only cost $20 to enter the park and ride all the rides. Then, we paid $2.99 for a steak and eggs breakfast at the Golden Gate afterwards. Then we got a free shrimp cocktail later from the Riviera. Man, I miss when Vegas was good and cheap...and the Rio hotel was in operation. MHO, the Rio was the best in all of Vegas and always will be.

I LOVE hotels. I even work at one as a housekeeper. I'm very good at my job and I love doing it. But this hotel makes me very sad. It's such a historic place but they left it to dilapidate for too long. I see not a single cleaner anywhere in this video, either. No housekeeping staff, no custodians, no janitors, no one. Which is depressing because I'm sure that if they had a dedicated and complete staff keeping the place clean and pleasant to be at, this place would be the most enjoyable novelty hotel on the strip!

We were talking about how interesting Vegas was, and the woman said she was horrified by one place... and three other people piped up along with myself and said "CIRCUS CIRCUS!" The carpeting at that time had cooties. One of the teachers on the plane that spoke up was a James Bond fan and had always wanted to go... and he said he had to take a shower after visiting. I hope that things get better for the place. I hope the carpeting is nicer? But, it could be a fun place to visit with the James Bond tie in, and kids would enjoy circus acts....

Growing up, my family wasn't poor, but we couldn't afford to stay in the main building of the resorts. We often stayed at places like the Manor, which many of the older hotels had, like the Stardust and the Aladdin. I think back then resorts like the Circus were not yet overshadowed by the ultra luxurious mega resorts like the Aria and Bellagio. So they were able to keep their room prices relatively high. My parents think we paid around $30-40 a night for the Manor rooms, which is essentially the same cost of the standard tower rooms at Circus today on off season.
