I stay in The Royal Hotel Scarborough owned by Britannia Hotels and it's the Tenth consecutive year that Britannia has come bottom of the pile in the annual survey by consumer group Which?
It's received some very bad reviews on Tripadvisor and some bad press over the last 12 months, BUT is it as bad as some people say? Let's find out!
The chain has 61 hotels across Britain, including Blackpool’s Metropole and Norbreck Castle, and Scarborough’s Grand Hotel.

Been in worse, mainly aboroad. Of the UK, memories of one hotel in Melksham will always be with me, including having to kill the fleas on my clothes and bag afterwards. Also nearly getting into a argument with the hostile manager. He had long hair and was balding which is not a good look.

The rates have to be so low to be competitive in areas like Scarborough, Skeggy, Blackpool etc. I know there are a lot of rooms but I'd be surprised if there was much profit after staffing and building costs etc. You would think if they invested and sorted these places out that Britannia could charge more. Then again, it wouldn't turn the places into luxury, just a standard to be expected from a hotel.

not much they can do, most of these big hotels are from an era before package holidays abroad became a thing, they probably don't have enough customers anymore to do up the place

I used to work here years ago - it's quite beautiful on the surface but underneath there's a whole derelict catacombs where the old kitchens used to be. Easily the scariest place I've ever seen. Also there was a rumour the old pool and spa were haunted as we always saw strange figments on the CCTV... we all got used to them.

As a Scarborian, this doesn’t surprise me. There’s only one place even worse than this, and it’s the Grand Hotel that you show in the start of this video. Ironically, also run by Britannia. This town has suffered immensely at the cost of the council. The locals get it worse, believe me. There’s bugger all here for us and communities. They’re so focused on the holiday seasons, yet it baffles me how what used to be the two most prestigious hotels here, are now run by kids and the standards are barely passable, if at all.

Honestly for 47 quid a night; that is an amazing hotel….even for an old hotel, it’s really not that bad…apart from the cobwebs (which are unacceptable) I really don’t see what’s so bad about it. However £12 for breakfast is expensive, and personally I think using the pool should be free…but okay; for £47 a night for a room, I guess it’s to be expected that not everything is included. Bah! Nothing! Not as bad as a hotel I stayed in near Cairo, where the concierge threw somebody's clothes out of a room and, without even changing the filthy bed sheets, gave it to me. He also showed me the toilet. Pushing in the door, we came face to face with a man standing on the toilet brim having a dump because there was no seat and the bowl was filled to the top with pee and turds. Or how about the Al Sewrah, Aleppo, where I killed a cockroach behind the bedroom sink to find it still there a year later? Or some hotel in Luxor, where what I first though was pretty floral wall paper were the many bloody remains of mosquitos squashed on the wall. The Royal Hotel? What's your problem? Luxury.

I worked in this hotel about 17 years ago (2006), while I was a student at the University of Hull’s Scarborough Campus - which has now shut down. The hotel was under English Rose, not Britannia back then and was better, but still had some maintenance issues. The owner at the time, lived upstairs in a converted apartment on the top floor. She had died now and her son sold it on. I went back with my children in 2021 and stayed in one of the suites. It was so disappointing. Filthy windows, rotting window frames, French doors which did not close properly and had a gaping hole where the handle should have been. From afar, things looked good - but close up, it was absolutely dire. Housekeeping had not cleaned the room well at all, but the bed was clean and comfortable, I guess…

A good tip for if you're staying at a hotel with spiders is to leave an open block of cheese in the room, something with a strong odour, cheddar or Stilton. The smell will attract the spiders in the night and prevent them from drinking from the corners of your mouth while you sleep. Top tip: then in the morning the cheese can provide a cost effective replacement for brekfast or you can just leave it in the room when you check out as a thank you to room service.

Wow well Tim I was wondering how The Royal Hotel in Scarborough would compare with The Grand Hotel that you showed us in Scarborough. I was very pleasantly surprised! Although as there was Damp issues, to be honest my Bathroom damp isn't much different just not black yet but I can see it. And I've suddenly developed Black Mould all around my double glazed windows in the Kitchen it's a cold kitchen so I nearly always keep windows shut & I got rid of the big hole in the wall where the extraction fan was, thats when the mould formed. Although I love old buildings because of there charm & character since moving into my Victorian Terrace built in 1900 I've come to realize it's very difficult not to get damp & condensation problems even when the building is being looked after. New builds do have their virtues! I liked your room it was nicely laid out as you said with TV in good placement. I rather liked the little Utility Room it was rather interesting I wonder if back in the day it would of been where the guests Lady's Maid slept?! The room really did need a good clean it would only take a few minutes to get rid of the Cobwebs, the splattered spiders hadnt even been removed! And those Net Curtains were awful! Kettle & Hairdryer weren't good either. The Bathroom was rather nice without a grotty shower curtain 😂 but needed a good clean & all those drawers! I never take that many toiletries away with me🤣 Those Glasses are just like the glasses I had at Primary School, I remember the Dinner Ladies serving hot milky coffee from big Galvanized Jugs in to glasses like that! That dark room with the chair holding the door open in the corridor was odd that was abit spooky & I found that Letterbox & the smallest hallway ever seen fasinating! All I can think is that back in the day there was Hallboys there & a sorting office collecting Mail for the Guests or Hotel Staff?! I thought the Hotels vibes were rather friendly & welcoming compared to alot of the Worst Rated Hotels. The lovely Ballroom style reception is amazing & they've really gone to town with the Christmas Decorations the Christmas Trees really were first class👌 The dining area & ballroom were still grand. The staff weren't Teenagers! I think this hotel is probably the best of the worst rated hotels in my opinion. The Britannia Hotel in Manchester comes 2nd best & The Grand Hotel in Scarborough is the 3rd best. This The Royal Hotel is opulence abound! Really enjoyed this! Thanks Tim for a very interesting vlog as always.

I have an old book on hotels, it mentions this hotel was owned by Tom Laughton, brother of Charles Laughton, Hollywood actor who starred in The Hunchback of Notre Dam. Orchestras used to play to guests.

What a perfect storm. A hotel that has guests who show no respect for the rooms they stay in and a management that thinks cleaning and maintenance have no part to play in their business. It`s amazing to think that anyone actually pays to stay in this building. Where are the health authorities that are supposed to see that hygiene and health standards are maintained in such buildings? I wouldn`t go within a mile of a place like that.

Stayed at the Royel for a night a few years ago as my friend had his wedding reception there and I had no complaints. The reception food was very nice indeed and our room was absolutely fine. This including the Grand (which I preffered) are not even close to being bad hotels in my experience in fact I would say they offered very good value for money.

I didn’t stay at the royal hotel but went for a meal there in June this meal was prebooked and was a in a private room. I honestly was completely amazed at how bad it was! It was so bad that I didn’t eat any of the main course at all. The first course was supposed to be a melon fan but which I had assumed would be honeydew melon but when it came was a chunk of water melon. The cheesecake when it came was obviously frozen but not as good as ones I’ve bought from a supermarket. The people I was with staying at the hotel were not impressed with the rooms.

Hi, thanks for your hotel video. I've stayed at Wortley Hall in Sheffield once that was before they had it had fully refurbished. Had leaking coming from ceiling and poor paintwork on walls. Even though we had the better bedroom the views we had was back of the kitchens windows would not open, bed was uncomfortable and breakfast very greasy. I know they have Christmas markets their. Would be interested how it looks now.

I enjoyed a five day break in March at this hotel. The room I had was not grubby and had a view of the gardens opposite and sea view. This place needs standards to be lifted for all rooms. I enjoyed my stay and would go again.

Not as bad as I expected. If only the room was cleaned properly. I’ll have to go for an explore myself next time I’m back there. Few little areas that you didn’t see like the ballroom, small dining room/ function room on corridor to the ballroom. Bar was a room under the stairs. Downstairs (different to the pool) has 2 function rooms which the Round Table used to book all the time. Great video, took me back.

Honestly wasn't bad, we were on a national holidays mystery experience so we didn't know we were staying there until we got to scarborough but I have heard of it before then, I think because it's so fancy looking people are expecting a 6 star experience, but as someone who can only afford 3 stars at best it was probably one of the better looking hotels I've stayed at. Obviously it's be nice if they'd put more effort into it, but it's not any worse than hotels I've stayed at in blackpool.

You really need to do the Clifton hotel in Scarborough. I think personally it makes the royal and the grand look like Hilton hotels as you get a idea of how bad that one is by just walking in the front door and no stunning foyer like this one . Also you will have done all 3 brittania owned hotels in Scarborough

Around 14:30 showcases just how disgraceful it is that Britannia have let all these hotels fall into disrepair. If they put a bit of effort and money into their hotels, they wouldn't be the worst chain in the country - they'd be number 1 by an absolute mile! From the outside, the architecture is exquisite, and inside - here and there - this place is stunningly beautiful. As we've seen in your other videos, the same goes for most of their other hotels...which is so, so frustrating. With a morsel of effort, Britannia could be a byword for the very best in British hospitality. Instead, they just don't care.
@Silanda
@Silanda 10 ай бұрын
@@Phantom0309 Exactly. Britannia doesn't own all these hotels because they were doing well, it owns them because they were doing badly and were relatively cheap. All these Grand hotels that Britannia own tend to have the same problem in common: they're in locations where the large volume of high end clientele that they were built for no longer exists. Now they have to survive as budget hotels that are really too "grand" for their meagre budgets. That being said. A lot of these hotels would be vastly improved if they just had better standards of cleanliness in the rooms. That's about the cheapest upgrade they could make.

It almost seems like it was converted or partially converted into long term rentals or a boarding house style accommodations at one point but has since been reversed without renovating. It would explain the walk-in closet, abundant bathroom storage and mail slot. My friend lived in a hotel that in the off season did longer term rentals but during peak tourist season was a short term hotel/BnB. They catered to the students from a school that ran their semesters October to March but would then go and do placements the other 6 months of the year so it was win win. Gives me similar vibes.

My experience in Britain is that a majority of old hotels in the uk are like this. I lived in the uk in the 80s and they definitely were especially around south Kensington. It is hard for them to be upgraded but is part of their charm

You have to admit Tim that the Britannia chain of hotels are at least consistent! Everything looks grand from the entrance and the ground floor reception/eating areas but as you make the ascent wow does everything start to go downhill. I have only ever stayed in Britannia hotels with a coach travel company. One of the problems for these sort of old big properties is that they don't really make any money from providing the accommodation and meals from coach trips. So what happens? No money left over to do the cleaning and repairs. Barely enough to cover wages. The property virtually stands still in time. Will anything change. Tim will tell. (Sorry time will tell).
