What I love about this movie is Alberto's relationship with Massimo. At first he looks like a tough man but he's a big guy with a soft heart and he took Alberto under his wing. Alberto might have lost his real father, but he found Massimo, the father he deserved. Also Massimo won't be lonely anymore when Giulia's not around.

I thought "Bruno" was Alberto's father. The reason Alberto associates his dad's name with hesitation/inhibition is probably because perhaps while Bruno did like the surface as much as his son, he was probably more "careful" about it, and would probably end up punishing and lecturing Alberto about being reckless, and so Alberto would end up associating his dad's name with annoying hesitation.

Can we talk about Alberto’s very small suicide attempt? It was heartbreaking to see that Ercole threw harpoons at him and he didn’t swim away, he was just slowly walking away. My got Disney, you got dark there.

When Alberto says “maybe he’d change his mind” while he’s crying, that got me. I started crying too. I honestly don’t think his dad was killed or taken, I think his dad wanted to solve his own problems, or like you said, didn’t want the responsibility, therefore leaving his own son. This may have put an image in Alberto’s mind that he left because of him and it just hurts thinking about it like that. Thinking his dad chose to leave on purpose, maybe, just stabs me in the heart. But who knows, there are also other possibilities. Just makes me cry every time 😂😭

Alberto displayed toxic and insecure behavior that many scared and abandoned children display. Broke my heart.

I'm also thinking that when Alberto gave up on the Vespa, he let go of his dad. It felt a bit lika a "I don't need him/to be like him anymore, i've found my family." And i think that's really sweet.

This movie really touched my heart because it was so beautiful and moving, definitely different from Pixar's past films

I seriously love the ending how Alberto said, “you got me off the island Luca, I’m okay!” and everything after that

my first thought was bruno was alberto's father. the moment he mentioned bruno I thought, he has to be the father no doubt about it. i kept waiting for him to explain why he called it bruno. when they had a fight, luca saw the tally marks on wall and when he went up to alberto i thought he was gonna ask "alberto, who is bruno?" but noo

Albertos father was so selfish, Alberto is just a kid and it traumatized him into being overprotective of his friends because he didn’t want to be left alone again! 💔

It's just sad (Of course tears came down on my eyes) that Alberto has been alone this whole time, the fact that he wanted Luca to be in his side the whole time and as well his jealousy towards Giulia's bond with Luca. He has the freedom to do anything, but what's missing is that acceptance and someone there for him like a father or a friend. In the end Alberto decided to stay with Massimo because in the film you can see how much Alberto looked up with Massimo and slowly form a father to son bond together. In the end I'm happy that both of them Luca and Alberto are happy for what decision and path they have chosen. 🇮🇹💙

What do you think would happen if Luca’s uncle went on land. Would he have turned into a normal human or would he have looked very pale.

I don't know whether I would want a sequel to Luca to be about to Alberto's father or Luca's time at school.

I have a theory, maybe just like how Mebh's mother was taken captive by the Lord Protector when trying to find a safer place for their pack to live, mayne Alberto's father met the same fate, if not worse We know that he and Alberto lived in an abandoned tower on an island, something that'd be dangerous for sea monsters, that they collected things and have more interactions with human than other sea monsters do What if: after being seen by some of the fishermen, Alberto's dad told his son to stay while he draw the attention of the hunters sent after them, knowing that he can't risk leading them back to the tower and to his son, Alberto's father chose to lead them as far away as possible, but was ultimately caught up with and killed

I think the Alberto’s dad was actually a sea monster too but he fall love with a human and he was ashamed of his son being both so he left them behind left him behind

I love this movie, don’t get me wrong, my heart just breaks tragically for Alberto. He is really a great friend and did not deserve such a tragic past that left him so traumatized he gets so insecure. I feel so bad for him because I also can relate at times. I felt like his dad left him because he felt it was his own fault (hence the quote “…and I’m just the kid that ruins everything.”) which is so untrue. Man, I have never met such an animated character as tragic as Alberto (besides Ian Lightfoot). I love him so much and wish I had a friend just like him. ❤️✨

Mini theory: What if his dad was actually human and his mother was a sea monster that died during child birth due to unnatural reproduction. I feel like Alberto's father truly loved his mother and saw Alberto as "this kid who ruined everything" when she passed away; which is why he was resentful towards him This can also explain why his father has been to the human town often, but never brought Alberto with him. Or why he chose to raise Alberto on this abandoned island instead of under the sea like all the other sea monsters (cause his dad can't breath under water like sea monsters do). He never wanted sea monster child, or the responsibility of keeping Alberto a secret/safe from humans that could harm him. He just wanted to go back to his normal life, before Alberto was in the picture, which is why he abandoned him to start a new life; away from sea monsters. i feel like he had that "i never asked for any of this" mindset some parents have, but out of respect of his mother, didn't abandon Alberto on the spot; but raised him to the bare minimum for him to be on his own; until he was 13

I feel like what happened was that theory his dad met someone in town and wanted to start a new life with them. But of course he has a son. Thought it’ll probably be easier to hide the fact that he’s a sea monster himself than having to deal with hiding himself and his son’s sea monster forms. So he abandoned Alberto to start a fresh new life with probably a new partner (possibly human), far inland away from the sea. It’s sad because that actually what happened to my grandpa and his brother when he was young but with his mother. Both sent to live with his grandparents in Texas while his mom started a new life with her new husband and new half siblings all the way to California.

Ahh!! Thanks for uploading on such a timely manor, I’ve been dying inside with these same questions!! I think that alberto’s mother died giving birth to him and that made his father resentful towards him. And wanting to run away from the pain, he left Alberto to travel the world. I also think Alberto’s grandfather did the same thing to his father and he’s just recycling his trauma. My two cents. 🪙🪙

I low key wonder how long Alberto has been abandoned. The tallies on the wall were like...372ish? At least over a year and he said "I stopped counting after a while. " My theory is because of a woman , either finding a new one and not wanting baggage or because Alberto reminded him of his wife. Either way, my guess is that since Alberto is very careless and adventurous the dad was afraid of him blowing their cover so he just dumped him on the island and told him he'll be fine there (especially since humans steer clear of it) It's so heart breaking that he actively let Alberto know he was abandoning him instead of just leaving and not coming back.

Alberto's father, didn't want the responsibility of raising his son, possibly because he didn't have the ' skills,tools, or knowledge'..to raise his son 'properly'.....he did what he felt was 'best' for both of them, regardless of the emotiional pain.......but Alberto as 'turned around' as we saw when Luca asked him, 'how will i know you are ok?',he responded..'Luca, you got e off the island....I'm 'ok''.......tearjerker moment.

Idk I just read the whole story with Alberto's father as a metaphor for how LGBT kids get renounced and abandoned by their parents.

I think his father wanted to make Alberto independent enough before the father had to leave for reasons beyond his control. I am thinking his father had a fatal illness and didn't want Alberto to have to watch his get sicker and sicker, so he left once he knew Alberto would be okay on his own. Or maybe he had to leave for other reasons, go somewhere that Alberto couldn't go, or wouldn't have a quality of life. I don't think a father would tell his son he is leaving for good because the child was old enough now, parents and children always stay connected. If his father was a "jerk" or a "bad dad", then he would have just left and not said anything, or let his son think he died. But by preparing Alberto, and telling him he was leaving, you know the father cared about him and wanted what was best for him. At least, I hope that is why.

I wish that in the end credits Alberto was in the tower and had a bucket of water and he splashed it on the wall of tally marks so they washed away and he started packing up his poster and grabbed his turtle and climbed out and Massmimo asked him “ do you have everything you want to take home, figlio?” And Alberto says “yeah I’m ready to go home, dad”

So here is my theory: - So yes his mom was caught in a net but she turned human so his dad has no clue that she is a seamonster when they have Alberto - She dies in childbirth :( -His dad is heartbroken and to make things worse, when he has to wash his newborn kid, he's a ✨seamonster✨ - His dad freaks out and even becomes neglectful and resentful to his kid because he is worried he will get them both killed - He eventually decides it's him or his son and it's NOT gonna be him so when Alberto turns 12 he leaves -When Alberto is 14 the movie starts and he meets Luca and Giulia - Now by the end of the movie Alberto has found his TRUE dad, (not his biological dad but a GOOD one) Massimo. 😭

And, if you think about it, if sea monsters do live in communities like Luca's, then they're a predominantly pack, or pod, minded species. Being alone for that long, when it wasn't even his choice to be alone, caused Alberto to have some negative pod mindset where he thought he had to be possessive and persuasive to keep whoever came into his life. And because Luca was so much more naive and inexperienced, possibly as Alberto had once been, Alberto mentally and socially added Luca to his new pod. His jealousy of Giulia stemmed from seeing her as trying to break up his pod. The fight that he had with Luca was him fighting to keep his pod together. And when Luca continued to act human, Alberto saw it as his pod being taken away again. Alberto's father leaving him to start a new life with a group of adults rather than just his son seems plausible. So now Alberto has done the same with Luca, Giulia, and Massimo. Now, I'm going to go dry my face from the tears.

This movie also teach adults to take care not only of their own kids but other's people kids even more when they are orphans or they need help to reach their dreams.

I think Hector from Coco could possibly be Alberto's father. Time lines up, could've gotten drunk and cheated with a woman in Italy on tour... a sea monster wanting some adventure and liberation would have easily slept with a land musician. The personality of the way the tower's decorated and even of Alberto seems kind of similar to that of Hector, and in an abusive relationship with Ernesto, he could've taken some time to raise Alberto, keeping him locked up out of confusion while Ernesto toured Europe, and been whisked away on the road again when Ernesto ran out of material. Alberto would obviously make an effort to forget his father, and Bruno could be a fake name assigned to him as a way to not even think about the real man.

I have a weird feeling that Alberto actually did experience humans as a young kid. Why would he be so insistent to Luca about how others will react to seeing his sea monster form if he hasn’t actually had something like that happened to him already...? I have a theory about his past too: 👨‍👩‍👧 Alberto’s parents lived on the land as humans (maybe he even had a human mother who met his father on the beach) but at school his peers discovered he was a sea monster at a young age and bullied him because of it (he has scars on his body, like that scratch on his arm near where Guillia touched when she discovered his secret) I think this would explain his interest in humans, because of his mother, but also explains his initial mistrust of humans 💔 Maybe his mum vowed to keep him safe at home and home schooled him instead, but then she ended up getting sick and passed away. The dad probably blamed the son for overworking her and stressing her out, making Alberto blame himself too (which he explains when he says to Luca that he always makes things worse and everyone is better off without him) when in reality she just had a terminal illness like cancer or something. 🌊 Alberto’s dad was too depressed to stay inland where everything reminded him of his lost wife, so he found the abandoned broken tower to hide Alberto away in. After a few years he was bored and wanted to go back to land, but he saw Alberto as too much of a liability so lied to him and said he’d be back when he really just abandoned him. 🔎 So Alberto lived alone for a few years, collecting human memorabilia to try and keep a connection with his human past, and mother, even though he realistically probably wouldn’t actually remember that much from his childhood and those more traumatic times in his life... Until he met Luca and the story continues. That’s my theory based on those little tid-bits of his dialogue and actions from throughout the film 🤷‍♀️ Edit: Although, it would be nicer if his dad wasn’t an arsehole, so maybe other people’s theories that he was captured or killed by fisherman while trying to find food and supplies for them both is a bit nicer...
