So I decided to return to the film "Life" to ponder some more questions regarding Calvin that was inspired when I was reading some comments on the last video about this movie. I do plan on making more content again and perhaps branching into my other interests and doing more on movies as this is quite enjoyable. I hope you all enjoy this video and let me know your thoughts and ideas in the comments! I had a great time reading them for the last one!

If that information was being passed down to Earth then perhaps it could work. I don't think anyone besides the crew knows Calvin's rate of growth and development after it seemingly died. I don't think they had a chance to contact Earth after it began its attack, which is when its development drastically changed. Maybe Earth could assume it's bad given it immediately f#$ked the s@&t outta those two astronauts lol.

In real life though when an alien organism is introduced to a new atmosphere or environment, the bacteria in that environment now pose a threat to that organism. It doesn’t matter how big and powerful Calvin can get he is still vulnerable. Even in the movie a change in atmosphere cause him to go dormant. And the bigger he gets the more gravity plays a role. He can only get to a certain size before gravity takes a toll on him (if I understood that correctly). Not to mention that he was able to succeed in the ISS and space because of the lack of fighting power/defenses of the astronauts. Space is not our environment therefore we are not as efficient and dangerous in space. But on earth Calvin is going to be faced with militaries around the world. Unless he’s truly immortal, I doubt Calvin will be able to survive for long. Or he’ll realize that to ensure it’s survival it has to live in the oceans and thus retreat to the oceans.

Good point but if he could survive that flame thrower what can bacterial do to him
@jaasonmiller
@jaasonmiller 3 жыл бұрын
@@victortarimo1943 well bacteria affects the inside of your body (vital organs, etc). It could be he survived the flame thrower because evolution developed a thicker skin for him or some type of protective layer of some sort that’s only on the outside. Just how we can survive certain things on the outside of our bodies but if they were to happen on the inside we’d die. Like in the movie war of the worlds the aliens died cause of the bacteria that got inside them before that they were indestructible and immune to human weapons.

@@jaasonmiller I see this as correct. He came from Mars which has a completely different atmosphere and completely different bacteria if it does exist on mars. The atmosphere here and the change in gravity would limit his size and ability to move. Also the bacteria here like you said killed the aliens in War of the Worlds. I highly doubt he would be able to survive here unless somehow he can adapt extremely rapidly to this planets atmosphere and or bacteria ect.

@jaasonmiller
@jaasonmiller 2 жыл бұрын
@@robinlavoie3467 At the time that Calvin probably arrived on Mars the planet had (if it did) early forms of life. Perhaps small rodents or, and I’m being generous here, pig-sized animals roaming around. It for sure didn’t have an intelligent dominant species that would be able to fight it off like on earth. Therefore it was fairly easy for Calvin to wipe out Mars since it had no resistance at all. On earth however it’ll be a different story.

In my opinion it only comes down to the scene where Calvin kills the rat. I think Calvin just wanted to observe and perhaps study the rat, just to find out if it had the slightest sign of being a threat to him. As soon as he finds that exact slight sign of hostility, he eliminates the potential threat. When the lab malfunctioned and Calvin found out that he still isn't home (ancient earth) he "shuts down" because there is no reason to waste his resources: water, oxygen, food. When he gets shocked he obviously thought it was an attack and not a naïve try to help him and from that moment he recognises human life as a threat to his existence. He follows following formula: study other lifeforms -> if they are friendly, ignore them -> if they are potentially hostile, eliminate them. That combined with his intelligence, physical strength and ability to adapt to his surroundings, he could be an apex predator and perhaps the dominant species.

I'm pretty sure he gains the knowledge of the creatures he consumes. Hence him knowing how to knock out the communications and knowing how to escape the room when they tried to poison him because the first person he consumed was the engineer. I think most peoples' comments don't fully grasp how dangerous Calvin really is. He outsmarted an entire group of scientists and killed all of them but one and had that pod go to earth. Why would he want to go to earth? Because he needs to feed and he knows by consuming his victims life exists on earth. People seemed to miss the fact that he became far more intelligent once he ate inside the engineer. I believe he gained his thoughts by absorbing his memories and neurons. He was immune to the vaccuum and radiation of space as well as fire. He would cause extinction on earth and bacteria would not harm him. He's also extremely strong. Now a virus, that could possibly kill him but a bacteria, no. Each cell is a muscle, eye, brain and it's own being. He's essentially a bunch of individual life cells collected together to create whatever shape he wants to be.

@Cameron Juarez Excellent, well said. Calvin is the Apex. We don't know the extent of his Adaptability or even the limit of his Sentience. He seems to be entirely driven through his instinct however. If he gets to Earth? There is no telling if he has the ability to shape-shift and disguise himself. We don't know if he in a way could become logical and reasonable for the sake of his survival. He is absolutely monstrous but in a way he might see and observe that disguises could serve as a superior advantage to his survival versus stealth via hiding, or using Brute force. He may even adopt a bipedal form which would be useful, I think since he may figure that it is a conservative way to reserve his energy in comparison to having more Limbs. A Bipedal Cephalopod looking Calvin would be Badass. And now imagine if he could become symbiotic with his victims, instead of eating them. I mean if he can take memories, well then his neurological system could allow him to have a form of "psychic" ability. Or the ability to sense space and time, electricity, heat, and other materialistic phenomenon. Seriously, a Psychic, Bipedal, Tentacle oriented fucking Symbiote would be Badass. Now that I think about it, Calvin vs the World would be way cooler to see. What the hell would he be able to do against Nuclear radiation? Cryogenic, Pyrotechnics, and bullets? Perhaps he would adapt by changing his cellular structure to absorb more damage. He may even adopt an acidic ability, a poisonous ability and even gills to breathe underwater as well as to breathe on land too. There is no telling what he can Be, what he can Do, and even what extent he will go to, to complete his own life cycle. Does Calvin even age? If he doesn't then yea we are completely done for. Calvin is the epitome of Apex. A true specimen of Adaptability and Survival. All hail Lord Calvin. 😂

It's conceivable he could become as large as a battle ship within weeks or even days in the ocean, at which point he would pose a threat to any ocean vessel he comes across, thus making ocean crossings for the purposes of trade nearly impossible for humans Fast forward a few years, and a Lake Huron sized Calvin could be roaming the seas...

Sadistic doesn't mean evil at the same time but if you watch the movie carefully, you will see Calvin is both sadistic and evil. I don't think we are in the same page to argue this topic. Therefore, let's agree to disagree.

Normally the only movies that scare me to my core are paranormal-esk type of movies......HOWEVER......Life terrifies me and the thought of Calvin has given me some bone chilling nightmares.....he is an apex predator possibly THE apex predator....he needs to feed in order to grow in both size and intelligence....this does not make make him evil this makes him an animal....and at any animals core their primary directive is to survive/thrive....the fact that its capable of almost instantaneous healing the only thing that may be able to kill it would be a form of acid that can break-down matter on an almost cellular level....if its able to adapt and shield itself from chemical weapons...gunfire would probably be useless burning it didnt do anything even when it was tiny....freezing it wouldnt work since it survived in the vacuum of space....we are left with nuclear but it didnt seem to have any weakness with radiation we would have to depend on the sheer force of the explosion to deteriorate it (hopefully).....with all of this we have to consider its size as well because the bigger it gets while it may be easier to find its also going to become stronger and more resilient....its the perfect predator

In my opinion Calvin can't reproduce fully on earth. Like in Asexuall Calvin is multicellular organization and also Calvin is a made of specialised cells . So if he/she can broke up then Calvin can regenerate and form multiple organisms similar to it. But he will never do this by itself unless he could cut out by someone else. On the other hand this specie is very specialised surely this specie may be using sexual mode of reproduction . Because organism like specialised organism that is Calvin . Calvin never use of fragmentation to reproduce itself because specialised cell organisms are not based on fragments. He can only ues sexual mode which requires male and female both . So it does not depends upon how he could increase his size but one day he have to die.

I will say that since he started out as a single celled organism that once he reaches earth & acclimates, he might go through cell division/mitosis & create more Calvins'/Calvin juniors & then begin assimilating the planet on the slow bases over the year by year transitional decade period.... but at least Calvin is not "The Thing".

id say the biggest threat is "the blob" 😂, its only weakness is being frozen, which doesn't kill it but puts it in a solid stasis state. each little piece can be its own entity, and they can join again to make a big one. plus the smaller ones can hide inside people. if you remember "the car scene" lol just as strong as calvin, its smart and it grow endlessly from anything organic it dissolves with its digestive secretions and its completely liquid being able to squeeze through anything if it doesnt brute strength itself through it.

I’d say if it can keep growing than yea. Or if it can reproduce than yea. If no to either of those, than he’s just gonna run around eating and killing and living however it wants really. But since it’s so vague on what his limits are to his growth and whatever. Also he’s not evil, but he is predatory. There were lots of times in that movie where it shows clear predatory instinct. He’s curious, and predatory. That’s devious. He’s insanely strong, durable, he’s outer life. He’s basically a giant really smart water bear. So yea, if he can reproduce (he seemed to enter a new stage of development at the end of the movie in that pod.) so he’d hunt everything to extinction. Or maybe he can just get bigger. I’d say if he can get bigger than a car with his smarts and all he can literally just roam around for the rest of his life and kill and eat whatever.

I so badly wish that this movie ended with David successfully flying it out into deep space and Miranda making it back to earth with PTSD, reporting to some general everything that happened while she was up there. And right before roll credits we get one last look at the ISS, in the lab, where the other other samples of Mars dirt is stored and there we see another Calvin growing in dirt leaving us with at least a more comfortable feeling of impending doom and satisfaction that there was at least one survivor from the mission

Calvin’s specie’s CELLS don’t seem to die, one cell handled the extreme radiation and extreme temperatures of Mars for zillions of years. AND if they can grow into a dangerous organism that fast from one cell, there’s no reason to think ballistic weapons could completely kill them, if anything it would multiply from disintegration. Also the organism is unaffected by extreme pressure changes and extreme temperatures from fire to the cold of space. No, this species is ridiculously OP physically. We might be able to neutralize an organism temporarily, but the species likely couldn’t be killed or neutralized on Earth unless it was immediately contained.

I definitely want a sequel where Calvin learns to simulate other lifeforms instead of just consuming them. Including humans. Starting with Jordan. By the middle of the movie Calvin simulates all humans, and then for the second half of the movie we see how the world changes and remains the same. This would be an extremely thought provoking and entertaining movie. Which is why it won't happen.

Because of how tough Calvin is, I don't think anything in the ocean would pose a threat by consuming it. As an invasive species, it would have no natural predators, and would wreak havoc on the sea life. The greater threat to Calvin would be it consuming something that is a lot more toxic than your average mammal, say one of those jellyfish, or lionfish, or some microscopic life that it just cannot handle. Alternatively, it could be microplastics, or something chemical like crude oil that could do it in. Finally, I would hope that it would be sensitive to audio or electromagnetic frequencies. A tragic movie that I've watched twice, and would watch again.

I didnt see the entire video yet but i want to adress some points. Each of calvins cells are an eye a brain cell and a muscle. I believe since he is therefore a massive brain he eventually would develop intelligence. But he cant just have a system of thinking develop instantly. I believe in about 15 years he would surpass human inteligence. Since each of his cells knows how to create a calvin he could easily reproduce if he wanted to and since he cant grow to any size because of pressure cancer and inconvinience he would probably start splitting at the size of a whale. His muscles are more dense and stronger than human muscles so he can probably win an unarmed fight no matter how many humans stand against him. I dont believe he would be confined to water because he can morph his body around at will. He is however as any living organism susceptible to radiation incineration and pretty much any death via human arnament. He could adapt by using tools:armor himself up from scraps and bear arms. I believe in the worst case scenario he would create a swarm civilisation under water and then attack mainland. Thing is no ammount of armor can stop an arnament of 500 10 kiloton tactical nuclear warheads that can easily disintegrate his army. The surviving population plagued by cancer and mutation would lose its advantage really fast and probably die off. He could probably live infinitely as a biological supercomputer at the bottom of the ocean sending out scouts and stuff but that would also just get nuked. I believe we would ungun him in almost any scenario

I believe that a single Calvin would not pose a significant threat, and it's unlikely it could reproduce independently. If it had the capacity to reproduce, it would likely prioritize doing so to enhance its chances of survival. Having more Calvins or other thermal units around would be a great asset in neutralizing all the humans on board due to their potential numbers and combined efforts. From a rational perspective, it's improbable that this creature would have ever been a substantial threat on Earth. On land, it would be highly vulnerable to various fragmentation weapons like mines and grenades, which would tear its body into numerous pieces, severely damaging all the muscle fibers and limiting its mobility. I doubt it could reassemble itself quickly, especially considering there was no evidence to suggest it could re-attach or regrow a cut limb back. Consequently, I believe that this creature would face significant challenges in trying to survive on Earth, let alone dominate 8 billion of those motherfuckers lol.
