Hello everyone! Today we are going to talk about whether or not I would still go to Coding Bootcamp knowing what I know now. This video is going to talk about some Coding Bootcamp regrets some things that I wish people had told me and also just some thoughts on where I am now. Currently I am a software engineer at a fortune 50 company. So do I have regrets? Or do I feel like I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am without going to a bootcamp.
I went to Flatiron School, one of the best Coding Bootcamp in the United States, and that came with a lot of fantastic memories and opportunities. However, definitely some things have left me thinking back on my experience. If you’re considering going to Coding Bootcamp or paying for coding program at all, I highly recommend you watch this video first, because I am sharing everything that if someone had told me, would have led to some very different decisions.

Currently self teaching through Meta’s professional Front-End certificate here. I’ve been back and forth about learning to code for close to 10 years now. I bought a few courses on Udemy and all of that, but I was never in a position to quit my job to focus on a coding bootcamp. I think you were in a good position to do a bootcamp just graduating from school and not yet entering the workforce because of the pandemic. I actually think it worked out in your favor because you put in the work for those 4 months and landed a job at DreamWorks which is awesome! I think for most people already working a full time job just to survive or have a family to support, a bootcamp probably isn’t the best idea. For you though, I think it worked out fine! Also with how young you are, just start investing as much as possible as early as possible, and in the future that $18,000 from the bootcamp won’t even be a drop in the bucket. You learned way faster than someone self teaching and landed a job way better than most entry level coders. I wouldn’t regret it at all if I were you.

I found Leon Noel’s 100devs bootcamp. 100% free, he posts his twitch lectures on KZfaq. It’s part time but since he posts lectures on KZfaq, you can make it fit your schedule however you need.

Flatiron grad here. And I agree 100% with everything you mentioned! I give the exact same advice when someone asks me about attending a bootcamp.

Thanks for such an honest and thorough review and explanation. You’re so right, coding bootcamp a won’t help you get a job, the onus is on you. Also, they shouldn’t call it software engineering, they should call their curriculum web development, Flatiron School did not teach us data structures and algorithms.

I went to Flatiron and had a horrible experience. It has given me so much anxiety for code challenges that I start panicking when I code. I'm currently attending Generation USA's Full Stack Developer program. It's free and miles ahead of my Flatiron experience. I'm learning so much and best of all I am enjoying it.

Congrats Shante for real. What are some of the differences between USA full stack developer program and flat iron school? I’m a deposit away from starting classes, but I’m thinking about doing per scholas , I’m mixed emotions about it. The really big difference I can think of between per scholas and flat iron is one you have to pay for and the other one Is free.

Thank you for this, I’ve been on the fence about boot camps for a while because it sounded too good to be true. My question is, do jobs still take these boot camps seriously? Will my portfolio be enough? I’m just afraid of being overlooked because I didn’t go to an accredited Boot Camp.

In my experience, your portfolio can be enough but the hard part is getting past a "resume screen." Without a degree or bootcamp a lot of employers (especially big ones) won't even consider you. That's definitely not to discourage. Plenty of employers *will* want to interview you, provided have a well written resume and a strong portfolio. It's just that you'll have to cast a wider net. I'd focus on smaller companies. They receive much fewer applications so it's less competitive and you have more of an opportunity to make an impression. LinkedIn is a really great resource to tap into. But I do want to emphasize that imo, with no degree and no bootcamp, you *need* to have a compelling portfolio.

You wanna do things like adding great projects to your portfolio, but also being part of events like hackathons and contributing to open source projects. This will help pad your resume with true relevant experience🤓

I went to a local coding bootcamp for 10 weeks and it was an in-person cohort. I do not regret enrolling.

I'd recommend self teaching first! Check out theOdinProject.com or Codecademy if you don't like the first resource. See how you feel after a few weeks of that🤓

I have been clamouring about this in my home country for months, In Africa business-minded people use their corniness to take people’s money and I feel like going out to call out a lot of these coding Bootcamp in Lagos, Nigeria. How on earth do you promise someone to become a full-stack web developer in 16 weeks? I tell anyone that cares to listen, if you are in Nigeria do not waste 400-500k attending coding boot camps in Lagos. You will waste your time, your money and your resources. If you are in Nigeria and you intend to attend a coding BootCamp, do your background check, you are checking to see what accreditation and affiliation the Bootcamp boost of, you are checking the type of tutors that will be passing knowledge to you, you are checking for the size of each cohort past and present. I am a product of a Coding BootCamp but If I know what I know now, I would never attend a coding BootCamp in Lagos Nigeria. My advice look into Alt School Africa, they offer 1 year front-end development course. They are just in their second year but they boost exemptions in California and some other perks, DYOR Tech4dev seems serious as well. Girl code Nigeria.   Alx Africa needs a lot of put in place, I believe they could spend the grant money from master card in a more robust way, the number of students peeling out of the program is alarming and the demand for 70hrs a week for a Nigeria society where you need to pay bills and feed, considering there’s no option to choose a discipline either front-end engineering or Back-end engineering or the both combined full-stack. it makes Alx Africa more difficult, well they say do hard things.

Really think about it. The price Flatiron charges you for reaching you basic things in web development is exorbitant. You won’t learn data structures and algorithms and there will be a lot of googling and confusion on your part. There are plenty of free resources that teach you more than you will learn at FI. Really think this. Good luck with whatever you choose!
