Years ago, I took all my original pressing Beatle (and solo) records - albums and singles - and gave them to a woman I worked with. She was much younger than I, and a huge Beatles fan. She was so overjoyed, she gave me about $80. I was going to give them to her for free, since they were sitting way in the back of my closet, doing nothing. Another coworker (who was also a Beatles fan) came along, nosing around...so I pulled out a 2nd copy of "She Loves You" (with picture sleeve) and told him to go away. No regrets - I'm sure this woman gave those records a good home.

A Capitol albums boxed set in both stereo and mono versions using the real US mixes is essential if you think about it. I grew up in Britain but started collecting US imports from HMV in Plymouth In 1971. I realised then that the US and Canada market was huge and that there were say 3 or 4 times as many American copies of the US Rubber Soul for instance as the UK version. To me, American albums sound great as they are thank you. I would love a mint set with dare I say it an official "Butcher Sleeve", and a singles box set also. Capitol should have realised this year's ago.

“None of us are getting any younger”. Spot on Andrew! I can’t believe it took Apple close to 50 (FIFTY!!) years to release footage from the original Let It Be video, to create Peter Jackson’s superb (if flawed) Get Back presentation. In my opinion, there is SO much that Apple PR could be doing with their precious back catalogue, but they’ve been dragging their heels for so long now. Very frustrating!!

Speaking as a first generation Beatles fan , If Capitol wanted to blow the lid off , they would need to make the set with mixes exactly as issued first time around , not with substitute mixes , and for the icing on the cake , issue as a bonus both the separate mono and stereo butcher album covers with their respective mixes as from 1966 , I'd buy that set in a heart beat !!

I found a big cache of shrink-wrapped OG pressing US Beatles albums a few years ago at a thrift store that I love but I don’t play much because I just prefer the UK albums. Maybe occasionally Rubber Soul or Yesterday and Today. That said it’s hard to go to a thrift shop here in the US and not see a beat up copy of Help! Or Hey Jude vastly overpriced ($30-60) because people think “Beatles = value.” The only used UK album I’ve found in the wild is actually Sgt Pepper’s but the disc itself is worn down badly. Still cool to see the glossy cover and Parlophone label instead of Capitol. Also another funny story. I visited the UK earlier this year and when I went to Abbey Road, a tour guide was taking a rich American family around. Stopping traffic for the crosswalk and everything while the rest of us had to risk getting run over. Anyway, the tour guide was in the gift shop piling the UK vinyl on this family and telling them that they couldn’t get these records back home so they should buy them all now. Not true at all, I’m pretty sure you can get the UK versions at Target’s new vinyl section now, but it was very funny. He had his phone out showing the differences between “With the Beatles” and “Meet the Beatles.”

Great suggestions, Andrew, since I grew up with the Capitol albums here in the States. And, yes, I would hope the sound quality is just as just as good as the Capitol CD sets! The singles collection in the blue box is superb, as you mentioned; great sound quality, and the reproduction foreign sleeves are first rate. A similar U.S. singles box would be a welcome addition to any Beatles collection (again, depending on sound quality). Hopefully, Capitol would emulate your conceptual design for a singles box set -looks amazing!

Wanting US Capitol albums is like wanting a blockbuster film made in colour with surround sound and 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio released in black and white with mono sound in cropped 4:3 aspect ratio because that's the way it was shown on TV in Outer Woop-Woop 30 years ago.

Capitol Beatles albums can frequently be found in the wild in very good and near mint condition. I am in Canada and have built up a substantial Beatles collection by purchasing used vintage vinyl in the wild. I regularly find Beatles albums that are Capitol US and Canada releases. No ring wear. No seam splits. Very good audio. Many of my Capitol releases could go toe to toe with early UK counterparts.

I still have my original Capitol 45s in my brother's jukebox and I will say even though they are in rough condition the mixes are so HOT that you don't HEAR the scratches - I remember at 10 years old being disappointed hearing the LP mix of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" on my mono "Meet The Beatles" after being BLASTED by the Capitol 45 - other similar mixes "Eight Days A Week" "Nowhere Man" "Slow Down" "Can't Buy Me Love" the mixes are unique and made to shatter the walls!

I think a stereo-only set would be fine for most people, especially considering a few of the Capitol mono albums are just folddowns anyway. A big reason why people are fascinated by these albums is because of Capitol's tinkering with the audio, and you get more of that with the stereo versions.

True, but “Yesterday…and Today” is pretty lousy in stereo, as the three Revolver UK tracks were simply in Duophonic before 1973 and feature unique mono mixes which have never been featured elsewhere. Also, the Rubber Soul UK and Help! UK tracks are pretty rough in stereo. It would be best to include the mono versions of every album that didn’t solely consist of fold-downs such as Help! (USA), and The Early Beatles (USA).
@classic_colin

There are also many other unique mono mixes, such as the extended version of “I’ll Cry Instead” on “Something New” and “A Hard Day’s Night” (USA), “I Call Your Name” on “The Beatles’ Second Album” and the reverb-laden “I Feel Fine” and “She’s A Woman”.

@@classic_colinThe all true stereo version of Yesterday and Today (used originally for record club-exclusive pressings as well as the cassette/reel-to-reel/8-track releases) contains unique stereo mixes of “I’m Only Sleeping” and “Doctor Robert”. My copy (Apple label, Winchester pressing) has those two songs in real stereo, and “And Your Bird Can Sing” in Duophonic.

All of the Capitol albums (as well as the UA A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack…which eventually became a Capitol album) except for The Early Beatles and Help! - which only have stereo masters and were electronically folded down at the cutting stage - are essential in both stereo and mono. The whole question about a Capitol boxed set is: if it is DONE RIGHT. Really right, no embarrassing errors or foul-ups this time; no omissions. Also, to be really complete would make it expensive...but that goes back to the fact that if it was really done well, people would pay for the quality, including me! Singles set as well. Heck I wish they'd just reissue the now-outrageously-expensive mono box set, but I guess that'll never happen.

I dunno if I'd buy a box set, but having them available again coulid be interesting. Specially if the mono versions were also released. Those are harder to find in good state and price. Even if Capitol stopped producing after 87, the stereo releases were never out of print till then, so not too hard to be found. And imo, some of those reissue purple/rainbow capitol of the 80s sound surprisingly good.

I do love the Capitol albums and was very happy when they announced the box set in 2004. I was one of the ones that purchased the 2006 set with the wrong mono mixes for Beatles VI and Rubber Soul. I tried searching for a proper copy but no luck so far. I do have the U.S. Albums box from 2014 which does have the correct mono mixes for those two records but the stereo mixes include the 1987 mixes from George Martin. I did recently purchase a Capitol box from the early 1970s which was meant for Capitol employees and contains 8 Beatles album on the Apple label….Thanks for doing this one Andrew!

I have four CD’s called “The US Singles Collection Volume 1 - 4”, the first 3 Volumes Vinyl Ripped by the Great Dr. Ebbetts. Incredible sound quality from Mint, Pristine, First Edition Capital Singles with color cover artwork. I met the good Doctor at a BeatleFest in N.J. About 20 years ago. After purchasing a DVD of the 1964 Australian TV Concert, he showed me his other offerings. Wow, my eyes grew real big when he showed me the “US Singles Collection”.and my ears grew bigger when I got home and listened to them. Took me straight back to my youth in the 60’s with my transistor radio under my pillow listening to the Beatles. I would buy this collection if it was released by Capitol/Apple and was mastered for vinyl from the original US tapes with the original picture Sleeves. I don’t feel I need the US Albums on Vinyl. Once I heard the British mixes on the BC 13 Box in the late 70’s, I said goodbye to the US vinyl mixes forever. Although I did buy the two volumes of “The Capitol Albums” in 2004 & 2006, mostly because of the true Stereo Mixes on the early albums.

Actually, the 2014 US Albums set contains most of the unique US mixes, not only mono ones: it has the unique stereo The Word, I'm Looking Through You, We Can Work It Out and Day Tripper, plus the James Bond intro in Help! They missed a couple in the Second Album and the three Revolver tracks in Y&T. They used the remasters only for songs where the mixes were the same as the UK ones, and to replace fake stereo and folddown mono.

It’s something definitely missing from the Beatles catalogue. I think a set with a Past Masters-style album to include their non-album tracks would be great (I know it wouldn’t be a long album, but hey). Both mono and stereo would need to be included to fill all the gaps, but whether they’d be separate box sets or all in one, I don’t know. I’m from the UK but came to the US albums quite early on, so I have an affection for them. And whatever you think about their ‘authenticity’ in terms of sound and track listing, they are still a cracking listen. Second Album is an absolute blast, a breathless, high tempo set that never lets up.

I'm a second-generation American Beatles fan, and I can attest to the fact that the US albums (the stereo versions, at least) were still in print up until the late 1980s. In fact, sometime around 1988, they were given new catalog numbers with a "C1" prefix, but in the runout grooves you can see the original catalog numbers crossed out. I have a mixture of these, which have plain purple labels, and earlier 1980s issues with rainbow labels. (I don't know if it's rare or worth much, but I have a copy of Yesterday & Today, catalog number C1-90447, which on the sleeve purports to be the stereo version, but which is, in fact, in mono. EDIT: I just checked on Discogs, and copies of this mispress are going for $80 or more!) I acknowledge that Capitol *butchered* the catalog, but honestly, I think the US LPs tend to be better sequenced than the pre-Pepper British albums. Despite the inclusion of duophonic mixes of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "This Boy," Meet the Beatles! is a vastly better album than either Please Please Me or With the Beatles, IMHO, and Yesterday & Today and the American Rubber Soul are pretty great, too. Would I buy a new box set of the Capitol albums? Eh, probably not--I've kept my 80s LPs in good shape, and I still play them from time to time. But I'm sure demand exists for such a thing.

Yes! My preference remains to hear Meet the Beatles and The Beatles' Second Album over With the Beatles. Purely by accident, Capitol made the era stronger by separating the R&B covers onto its own album and by creating a first side on MTB that includes "Hand," "Standing There" and "This Boy" created a knockout punch for anyone just hearing of the band. I'm second generation myself, having bought MTB in March 1980 and being blown away the first time I heard the album. I couldn't believe the energy. I really enjoy the duophonic mixes, if only because the reverb and compression creates a more exciting sound. Just as how Ringo's drums on "You Really Got a Hold On Me" sound so much more powerful on Second Album than on With the Beatles. (To say nothing of the miserable flatness of the performance as presented on the mono 1987 CD of With the Beatles.) I'd buy a Mono/Stereo box if done right and priced fairly and not the usual premium that Apple puts on their items. (The Revolver box is still going for just under $100 on CD!!!)

Maybe hot take: As whatever-generation fan you'd call someone who mainly got into the band around 2008 from the US, I think it's been kinda a good call they generally bury the existence of the Capitol albums. They are an interesting and important historical piece, but would be really confusing to any new fan. In 2008 I was getting into classic rock as a whole, and The Rolling Stones catalogue confused me a lot (and tbh still does). I somehow wound up with both the US and UK albums (and both are on Spotify now) and the main thing I wanted to know was "what one do I listen to first, and how do I get one of each of their songs on my Sansa Fuse MP3 Player?", "what is this Flowers album, and why does it have half the tracks of the 2 different versions of Between the Buttons?", I think after I got them all on my PC I had "Ruby Tuesday" like 5 times. With the Beatles in 2008, there are the 14 'core' albums (Please Please Me to Past Masters), a few modern releases of 'new' material on the side like Anthology, BBC, LOVE, and LIB Naked, the obvious compilations 1, and the Red/Blue albums (and I guess the Across the Universe OST), and the 'Mono Albums' for the purist audiophiles that I rarely saw on store shelves. It's concise, easy to get into and just start listening to the important stuff. The Capitol albums for me are an interesting listen, but overall rather obsolete in my modern Beatles fan opinion. An interesting historical trip, kinda cool how they are a bit more 'rock' focused and cut out a lot of the quieter songs for some, but I rather not have I Feel Fine sound like they were trapped in a cave on casual listening lmao. I do kinda feel like they should just release a compilation of all of the unique tracks though next time they make a Beatles boxset, like a sister album for Past Masters called 'Capitol Compendium'.

The Capitol Beatles Album Yesterday and Today was produced on CD by Apple in 2014, featuring the suitcase picture on the front and the original track list on the back. The original vinyl Yesterday and Today featured Dave Dexter's duophonic mixes of the three tracks lifted from the UK Revolver album: I'm Only Sleeping, Dr. Robert, and And Your Bird Can Sing. In 1966, EMI had sent Capitol the mono mix tapes for the three songs, so Dexter did his magic to create the duophonic mixes. For the 2014 Yesterday and Today CD, Apple used the UK stereo mixes of the three songs. The difference is most noticeable on I'm Only Sleeping, its mono mix having less backwards guitar than the UK stereo mix. When I had the Capitol album in 1966, I listened to the duophonic mix. When I bought the CD in 2014 and heard the UK stereo version, I made my own duophonic mix from the mono using Garage Band.

I do like your idea of a singles box set as well, but I just don't have too much confidence in the people at Apple who are in charge of these aspects. They've missed many opportunities at times letting bootleggers beat them to the punch and sometimes proving fans with items they wished Apple would put together and release. Anyway, I hope they're listening this time around.

From the time I first "met" The Beatles in 1964 until 1988, the Capitol albums and singles were the only Beatles music I knew. As such, they are the versions I love, and no amount of heckling from the purists is ever going make me embrace the British versions to the same degree. A new, complete set of Capitol albums would be a joy, as long as the sound is authentic to the originals. What I would like most of all would be a complete set of Capitol singles with the original picture sleeves. They should offer them in both vinyl and cd formats. I would happily buy both.

Mix-ins of UK,North American, and German lp mixes are included in the Capiphone set, along with later fades on certain tracks,Singles and EP sets with ALL TRUE mono mixes, including the With the Beatles titles that were ending-shaved on the 2009 remasters.2 tracks that were shaved are now restored to the original fadeouts and on the EP sets.

Back in the day, when the mono cd releases were announced but not yet released, Capitol US did flood the market with the stereo US Lp albums. I bought some to refresh my collection thinking they never would be issued on cd. Then we had the Capitol Master series arrive after a time. If we can stay alive long enough we can enjoy all the mixes from every country in the world. They will be offered someday. My collection is mostly complete due to shady imports and used record store finds. Hope this helps you!

I would like Universal/Apple to release in each country where Beatlemania was important, a special box set with the official discography of that country up to the edition of the red and blue albums in 1973. For example, in my country, Argentina, the box would contain: "Por favor, yo"; "Con Los Beatles"; "Yeah Yeah Yeah" "Socorro!"; "Los Beatles" (1965 argentinian compilation); "Rubber Soul"; "Revolver"; "La banda del Sargento Pepper"; "Los BEATLES"; "Submarino amarillo"; "Abbey Road"; "Hey Jude!" "Let It Be"; "Por siempre Beatles"; "1962-1966"; "1967-1970" + an exclusive "Rarities" for each country with the songs not included in albums, for example, in Argentina we didn't have "Bad boy" until 1976.

The chief reason we got fake stereo on so many of the tracks on the Capitol albums is that, for every new British release, the mono masters were available to Capitol sooner than the stereo masters. So just drop the same recording into both channels, crank up the bass in the left channel, crank up the treble in the right channel, add a little - or a lot - of reverb - and call it Full Dimensional Stereo! It's a bit odd that in 2023 some fans are saying they'd pay good money for a vinyl box set (let's say around $200) that includes "She Loves You" in fake stereo while other fans are ready to shell out for a demixed/remixed version of "She Loves You" in true stereo for the first time ever. Sure, I'd buy both packages. But it galls me that a Dave Dexter-ized package could receive the same amount of prestige as a Peter Jackson-ized package. Chalk it up to nostalgia.

I'll say this having grown up as I guess a 2nd generation fan in the late 70's as a child hearing the music for the 1st time here in America. At the time, there were commercials all the time on tv for those Capitol compilations like "Love Songs", "Rock And Roll Music", and I do remember seeing one for "Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl" when that was released. If Capitol wants to do it right, it'll be massive...but worth it. Somehow make the box with both Mono and Stereo using the TRUE American mixes that everyone knows then absolutely they should put it out. Oh and you can count me in for an American Beatles Singles Box set too again with the true Mono mixes that came out as The Beatles were releasing them. That would be great with the packaging and recreating the Sleeve art and Record label art.

A US singles box and British EP Box yes...However I might be in a minority but I’ve got a bit of Box Set fatigue! And they are beyond my budget. I collected about 80% of the 2014 Mono individual albums (couldn’t stretch to the box) but actually found that fun and extended my enjoyment of them..... My preference now would be for flip back/laminated represses of the stereo analogue Albums, along with the Monos released individually. Oldies too! Same with the US albums. This will never happen but I cannot believe they would not sell shedloads. You only have to see what people are prepared to pay for tatty old copies.. I don’t think Apple fully understand Beatles collectors or what they want.. Keep up the great work Andrew

The answer is a resounding YES from me. I get why people don't particularly like the US albums, but those albums were what the teenagers here in America bought. They didn't care about sound quality or the shuffling around of the tracks because the UK albums were virtually unheard of here in the US for almost 25 years. After the catalog was standardized to the UK releases in 1987, the original Capitol albums, aside from the releases mentioned in the video, were shoved to the side. A vinyl box set would be amazing, especially if they used the original Capitol tapes (if they still exist). Doing so would preserve many of the unique mixes Capitol did, the reverbed I Feel Fine/She's A Woman single being one example. ETA that I would totally buy a Beatles US singles box set too.

Between a couple friends and myself we had a bunch of Beatles stuff on tape and vinyl back in the day. Of course it was Capitol (or UA for AHDN). I had "Revolver" and the White Album (XDR prints) on tape; "Yellow Submarine" (Apple label) and "Yesterday and Today" (rainbow label) on 33. A friend had the White Album (Apple label) and AHDN (UA black label) on 33 and "Sgt. Pepper" (with the sides flipped!) and "20 Greatest Hits" on tape. Another friend had "Meet the Beatles", "Rubber Soul", "Sgt. Pepper", "Yellow Submarine", "Let It Be", "Live at the BBC", "Rock & Roll Music Vol. 1" and "Past Masters".

Another top shelf video. The remastered Red and Blue albums to me are a waste of time. The tracks on the blue album have been 90% remixed already. The problem with the pre Revolver albums is that The Beatles didn’t spend much time in the studio so outtakes are not plentiful. A capitol albums box would be great instead of what’s coming

I didn't grow up with the original Capitol albums, but did buy the 2006 Vol. 2 set. I loved it then and still think the mastering Ted Jensen did stands up well. I would love a new Capitol albums vinyl box. The vintage copies that exist here in the US are almost always dogged to death and most US record stores charge inflated prices for records in poor condition because of the nostalgia factor. Nothing could be worse than a groove worn copy of a 3rd generation mastering of a Beatles record. Give us something like the Vol 1 and 2 Set in vinyl form and you'd have an interested customer!

The only 3 Capitol albums I would consider buying would be Magical Mystery Tour, Meet The Beatles and The Beatles Second Album (the latter two would be in exchange for a UK With The Beatles) but this would be if I go for a near-full discography set. And in case anyone was wondering what a near-complete discography set would look like for me, It’d have PPM, MTB, TH2ndA, AHDNUK, I Feel Fine/She’s A Woman, BFS, Help!UK, WCWIT/DT, Rubber SoulUK, Paperback Writer/Rain, the two albums I already have (Revolver and SPLHCB), US MMT, Hey Jude/Revolution, White Album, Yellow Submarine (album, I enjoy the instrumentals), Abbey Road and Let It Be. Meet The Beatles and 2nd Album are mainly there so I don’t have to get I Want To Hold Your Hand, She Loves You and the better 2 songs on Long Tall Sally separately. Also, does anyone know of you can carefully damage a record so that it permanently skips a song (so I can have Help! always end on Yesterday)

By the time Apple gets around to issuing the original Capitol albums on vinyl, most of the original buyers of those albums in the 1960's will be long gone. Same for a home video release of "The Beatles at Shea". The quality of the film is obviously good enough to present in high definition, but there must be either licensing issues or just that the original soundboard recording isn't good enough. We all know there were many overdubs done post-production. Heck, they even completely replaced the performance of "Act Naturally" with the studio version!

FIRST NOTE: If the Japanese boxed set was available with "all rights" pressings of the Capitol LPs, and with orange labels, then it continued to be available through at least 1976. Also, there seem to have been TWO sets of LPs available through the club with the same outer box. While it is true that the "decade" boxed set was available only to people connected with Capitol, the Special Limited Edition from late 1974/early 1975 was probably available commercially; it was a ten-record set. A Capitol albums set? Sure, but I would rather see the singles set (with all the Capitol picture sleeves). The singles boxed set would contain reissues of the standard singles (25 singles), plus the reissues of five of the six Star Line singles from 1965 (5 singles), plus reissues of the two Capitol EPs, plus the singles that were released (or were scheduled) between 1976 and 1990: "Got to Get You Into My Life," "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" (numbered sleeve), "Girl," "Sgt. Pepper," "Movie Medley"/"Fab Four on Film," "Love Me Do," "Leave My Kitten Alone" (7 singles), plus a reissue of the rare "Beatles Talking" promotional single, plus "Baby, It's You," "Free as a Bird," and "Real Love" (3 singles, with the original mixes of the latter two songs). That would be 41 singles and two EPs. Yeah, that would do it. Even better, how about a worldwide album set? They should release a set containing repressings of ... A Collection of Beatles Oldies (UK Parlophone) Yesterday...And Today (US Capitol with butcher cover) Long Tall Sally (Canadian Capitol) Leurs 14 Plus Grands Succes (Their 14 Greatest Hits, French Odeon) The Beatles in Italy (Italian Parlophon) Hottest Hits = Greatest Hits (Danish and Swedish Parlophone) Beatlemania (Brazilian Odeon) Los Beatles (Argentine Odeon) The Essential Beatles (Australian Apple) Beatles Greatest (Germany, Holland) Beatles No. 5 (Japanese Odeon) Beatles Story (US Capitol) Por Siempre Beatles (Argentine Odeon "Pops") Big Beat of the Beatles (South African Parlophone) Para Ti (Uruguayan Odeon) Surfin' con los Beatles (Surfing With the Beatles, Venezuelan Odeon) plus poster covers of LPs from all around the world where different covers were used: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Peru, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela. This would be one crazy set, but it would teach people that the standard catalogues of most recording artists were different all around the world. It was NEVER true that Capitol/USA was messing up their catalog. What was ALWAYS true was that each EMI affiliate had the right to determine what songs to include on each album (and sometimes what cover to use) -- in order to best market the group to their own countries.

Back when they came out, I actually did buy all of them, separately, at Wal-Mart over the span of a few months. I assumed they were all still in print individually. But it looks like current prices and availability on Amazon vary greatly, depending on the title. Some titles, like The Early Beatles and The Beatles' Second Album are still available for approx. $15 and $22 respectively. But the Yesterday and Today CD is $129 (!), Hey Jude is $80, and Meet the Beatles! and Rubber Soul are unavailable. Interesting. I mean, the box set is available and only costs $134. Maybe the individual discs having those little UBI inserts, that go over the spine of the covers, made them collectible. Otherwise, there's no difference between the individual discs and the discs in the box set, as far as I know.

As such, I can't imagine I glean anything from a US albums box set which would, for me, amount to an expensive fetishist curio and an Apple cash grab.

I love the idea of a formally re-issued but limited edition Capitol album and singles box set, but it would be purely for fans or collectors beyond the US at this point. If one goes searching around in the states, there is so much Beatles product on vinyl ranging from the original Capitol rainbow pressings through the 1988 American releases in good to excellent condition that one can build a nice collection for a reasonable price on their own. The Canadian re-issues from 1978 on also sound excellent for what it's worth and are relatively affordable. I'd likely buy a re-issued Capitol Beatles box set on vinyl purely for nostalgic reasons, yet if The Rolling Stones ABKCO pressings can be re-issued on vinyl in the 2020's, so can The Beatles on Capitol. Thanks for another excellent video, Andrew!
