I ate many of these as a kid in Arizona there were apache Indians close to where I lived and they taught us kids what we could eat in the desert.

They are a good fruit to eat. Even the newbe cactus stems are good to eat but have to be well cooked.

@@moreadventuresmadefromscratchThere are videos on KZfaq on how to make cactus smoothies. *Does your family ever grow cactus inside? It's a fun hobby of mine. The trick is putting them in a window with the most intense sunshine and don't over water them. My Mother (94⅘) has blooms several times a year. 👍 I enjoy all of your videos. It's nice to see someone on KZfaq who respects God.

I was gonna say those little spines are called glochids but see you already know that. If I remember correctly, Opuntia cacti grow wild in the 48 in every state but Maine. I've seen them farm them in southern California, they get pretty big.

I remember when I was 10yrs. old my dad Would take me and my brothers hunting for them. But my dad would call them "tunas". Some were as big as figs and they were delicious. Good memories.

Old gloves and lots of duct tape on them and I pick them by hand. Of course, ours are much bigger. We use a propane torch to burn the spines off and a razor blade (or sharp knife) to slice them open. Haven't done it for years but like you said, it's a lot of work.

I have lived in Southern Calif since 1950. In the 1950's, we lived near a huge prickly pear cactus patch. The "apples" were much larger and redder. I preferred to eat the young pads that had immature soft needles that could be easily scraped off. Was good with a little salt.

I enjoy your C&C videos, I bet a lot aren’t willing or knowledgeable to pick some “wild” and just eat it. You should see the people when I pick berries from old homestead tracts long forgotten. Now just walking or biking paths! That’s ok more for me.
