About cookie cutter builds: Druid is the same. Tons of builds you can make work and adapt to varying situations. What partly drives the cookie cutter builds into the minds of players have recently come from the popular KZfaq channels covering beta. I constantly see people trashing my discussion on variant builds (builds highly popular and tested on pservers for years) on forums such as reddit, because some KZfaqr didn't cover them. There are a lot of "internet master" players who have never actually played the build and class they talk about. I like how Esfand stresses that variation is allowed and even nurtured in Classic on some classes; you only need to learn to adapt and keep an open mind.

Definitely rolling ret because of you now. I rolled Ret as my main back when I started at Cata launch and I've played it ever since. I really wanted to bring my main back with me to classic but I've been searching for a reason to believe it's not a waste of time. You are my reason. Thank you for showing me you can Ret in classic.

Absolutely incredible and fair assessment of the written guide.. Whoever has questions about the class really just needs to feel out the class and find out what jives with you. Took me over 2 years to kinda get the hang of things playing a paladin.. They are so unique and definitely will keep your brain occupied tgeiryucrsfgjbh/theory crafting all sorts of crazy combos.. On lights hope.. Off tanking as a paladin alongside a 2h prot ret build with consecrate in UBRS was a sight to behold.. Granted the guy was decked out with MoM but it comes to show.. You just have to think outside the box a little bit.. This same paladin taught me the 21/0/30 spec with divine favor and vengeance.. I personally main ranked every 5 man dungeon as a paladin with this spec or and improved lay on hands with imp bow 20/0/31 spec... Tanking as a paladin in blues with 0 in prot sounds crazy but the synergy is there as long as you can cover your hit chance or come close... I hit 60 2 months before the server is set to be shut down but the tanking experience was invaluable when you had your dps with loot from AQ/naxx.. And you are in greens /blues Some tough lessons learned but hard work pays off.. Don't forget about those stoneshield potions if you tank as a paladin.. I would never take the 21/0/30 spec and tank in an actual raid but the spec can tank, dps, and heal. The dude that taught me this spec full clears naxx and aq40 in this very spec and all you need is a quick visit to the bank teller and your g2g. I don't want to sound pretentious but I found the 21/0/30 build trivialized healing.. Paladins are insanely strong healers and your gonna have to find a way to entertain yourself because it's just too strong. Maybe I'm comparing it unfairly to the APM and calculations to be made when tanking but I just got bored healing.. Nonetheless.. You'll do just fine with this spec and no one will mess with you out in the world.. Your just not worth the trouble...

ironic that i don't have aspirations to be a full ret pally (holy/ret hybrid at worse) but i still enjoy listening to this and feel like im still learning stuff about pally. that's what i like about them, even if they're just auto-attack to win they have so much diversity in their potential with gear and specs.

Great guide, love these deep-dive videos. Would you consider doing a video talking about other classes how you feel about them. Maybe a pvp guide and tips/tricks vs other classes? What classes are hard/easy in 1v1 etc. Never played paladin, but ret seems really fun. Here is a serious question, i know pallys are not the optimal DPS class, but how do you think about other non-optimal specs, will you take arms warriors as DPS? SL Locks? I think a lot of pvpers who play these specs would love to raid if they could without spending hundreds of gold each week respeccing. Also regarding MC gear, i really hope they have the full loot-tables in phase1, like bracers and girdle.

SO question about Seal Of Command. does its DMG scale of Spell power or/and attack DMG?

I played Mage in Vanilla and most of BC and only learned of the glory that is ret close to the end of BC so I am planning to try and play classic as Ret start to finish.

Watching your videos because I had a question about something WoW classic related. I played a paladin back in the day up through Legion and Vanilla was my favorite time for ret in PVP. What I found was about 25% crit was nice and then you focus on other raw stats. Strength is better than AP because if/when you get blessing of kings or other buffs it will enhance you more so I literally focused on raw stats.

Telling people to get 9% repeatedly, should really be stressed hard you only need measly 3% Hit from gear if you are a human paladin wielding sword/mace with Precision talented.

something you didnt mention is that mention was the ret pallys have more health so lay on hands heals more since its max health

Actually a ret paladin can be useful utility in raids, back in the day we ran 2 ret paladins in raid where one would judge wisdom and one would judge light which dps casters loved and even healers becaise they could throw a dot on a boss amd get free mana and heals. Especially when you get to Naxxarams where all the mobs and bosses are undead so paladins can rotate in exercise for extra burst damage.

Something must be wrong with me. I have absolutely no intention of ever playing paladin in any of their specs. They are one of 4 classes I have no interest in (the other 3 being hunter, shaman and druid), but here I am watching this 102 minute long video on retri paladins from start to finish. I regret nothing!

With how the spell power coefficients seem to work on beta, thanks to the recent data mine, ret paladins might actually be better than on pservers.

Clapping to open video is a good thing, it makes sure your Audio and video is matched up when reviewing the footage for editing you MAY want to cut it out in edit though ;)

SotC is bugged and fixed in TBC, therefore it's useless to use the improved talent. I'd rather get parry haste for leveling

I would like you to review the BIS list for Rets Phase3 and 4 that is listed on wowhead classic. For weapons most places list UTB as BIS, which is subject to a proc to be good, also only 1 has it as Ashkandi which is flat damage. Which one would be an upgrade? if I already have BRE which is super good but is more for PVP.

At 28:44 I have an idea about how much crit chance you should have, the vengeance is 8 sec buff, a 2hand attack speed is 3.60 or some so you can attack 2 times with judgement you have 3 attacks in 8 second of vengeance so 1 out of 3 needs to crit, so 30% crit chance is what you need to keep it up, but as a vanilla paladin it's been a long time ago but 30% is purity hard to get as I remember

Most of these guides only really apply to the hardcore min/max people. This is a minority group of players. If you are level 60 and have a pulse you wont have trouble getting into a raid. I vividly remember 40man pugs being formed in chat all the time taking pretty much anyone willing. Lol people need to relax and just play the game.

Cool stuff for sure - nice after you've raided as holy for a year and have picked up the necessary pieces to respec and just have fun outside of raids. Sadly - I have never heard of a single guild saying they wanted a ret. paladin in their raid composition. Awesome if you're able to use your stream to help make ret-raiding a reality, though.

I'm betting your initial "clap" is from a sports background. I do the same, and can remember many of my hockey and soccer coaches doing the same when they're prepping for some sort of speech before practice/game. It's a decent authoritative attention-getter in a louder environment, but tends to occur as a matter of habit.

Reckoning is useless in pve (raiding ofc because we talking about hit cap and max lvl stuff), you should never get hit by a critical strike, there are tanks who absorp that, so you never get an extra attack since you won't get hit. I don't remember if DoTs from bosses crit even so you still waiting for a DoT on you that have a chance to crit to prog reckoning. With the explaining of you what reckoning does in classic you don't get an extra swing you melee hit get prio to swing emediatly

Is there a source someone could link for weapon skill being worth 3% hit? Only thing I've found was that specialization only negates the 1% hit removal from the code.

Why would a hunter want Ashkandi? Literally wearing 2x Dawn's Edges with 15 agi on each is better than Ashkandi with the same enchant. Even Barb blade is better than Ashkandi as a stat stick.

Do everything you can, spend 15+ hours a day working on your gear, read every guide, master the ret paladin and you MIGHT just be able to out dps the tanks!

I don't believe you can stack food buffs with each other or elixir buffs to more then 1 in actual live wow. I believe that was part of the private server broken code. So you shouldn't be able to stack a dps flask with a spell power one neither dps food with spell power one.

Is classic ret fun though? I never actually played a paladin during vanilla although my main in TBC was a holy paladin and I did play ret sometimes but I know ret doesn't have crusader strike in classic and it seems like you just kinda stand there auto attacking and judging. But they look so cool ... When did pally get avenging wrath? Was it during bc or at the end of bc with the wotlk prepatch? I can't remember if I had it at 70 or if it was like Titans grip where you got it at the very end of TBC. I am excited for classic but I'm WAY more excited for TBC/wotlk classic which blizzard says they'll release if classic does well. But I am still pretty excited for regular classic because I never hit 60 during vanilla so I never did the old raids or dungeons. I'll probably be playing a warrior(specifically an arms warrior, fury for pve though, maybe arms in 5mans) although I do want to level a reckoning pally and then raid as a holy paladude like my old bc days. I wish ret was more interactive in vanilla because my current main is a ret and honestly it's insanely fun. Ret is one of the only speccs in modern WoW where they actually did a really really good job with it. It's more fun than warrior now. Modern fury warrior is just super clunky and arms is really underpowered compared to how it once was. Damn shame. Edit: I just realized how long this comment is. I typed this in like 20 seconds.
