What you have done here is create a super-darlington triplet of transistors, and the result is a massive amount of amplification, so the tiniest amount of current residuals making it into the base of the first transistor is enough to appreciably light up the LED. The required current into the first base to turn on the LED is so little that mere capacitive displacement current from nearby events crosstalking across a picofarad or so of capacitance is enough. NPN transistors such as this will typically have gains of perhaps 200 or 300 or so, which means the combined gain would be 10 million or more. If it was any more, like with 4 stages or more, I suppose mere thermionic noise would likely be enough and the LED would be lit all the time even if it was shielded from varying EM fields. I mean OMG MAGIC THIS IS AMAZING HOW DOES IT DO THAT!?

@snackentity5709
@snackentity5709 2 жыл бұрын
@fred McMurray again, every non-contact voltage tester i've seen has an LED indicator. you'd have to be going out of your way to find one that doesn't have an LED. DIY projects are usually not designed nor tested to any set of standards/regulations that would guarantee reliable operation, hence why i make the suggestion that a COTS tester will be better. this is especially important for applications like this where you're trusting your safety to the proper functioning and calibration of the testing equipment.

Oh you can buy a made in China piece of plastic with the cheapest quality components for a few dollars, then throw it in the garbage in 4 months. It's a triple Darlington connection. There's a high DC gain, but It isn't working with a DC current. The gain is necessary in order to pick up the signal from the antenna and amplify it enough to get current from the collector through to the final emitter stage. Forward voltage drop of white LED is usually around 3V. So the circuit doesn't need a resistor, unless you're using it to detect the output of a Tesla coil, or some other high alternating voltage source. If anything, it might need a resistor in series with the LED when using a higher voltage battery.

@Ennio Ricciardi To achieve current amplification to all 3 emitter-follower stages, all 3 transistors must operate in the constant-current (linear) mode of operation. One must bias or "force" the base of input stage transistor to at least 2.1Volts. Normally, one can implement a voltage-divider at the base of the input stage transistor . However I don't see it here and the circuit still works -- I guess I must have missed something, can anyone help me out? The current driving the LED at the output is Iout = Betaf^3 * Iin -- no wonder the circuit can be sensitive enough to detect the input signal! The sensor head is basically an antenna. Incoming electromagnetic wave from the source excites electrons in the wire of the sensor head, generating an AC current at the input of the circuit (current amplifier). The circuit amplifies the current and use it to light up the LED.

The fact that he used discrete NPN transistors in a darlington configuration clearly demonstrates his knowledge is superior to yours. Here are some words you should ponder before shooting your mouth off: Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt. - ABRAHAM LINCOLN. @@WizardNumberNext It's not my fault you're too stupid to understand the first stage uses an antenna to provide a input signal to the base, nor that you fail to understand how transistor gain is achieved in BJTs. You might want to inform the other people indicating they built a working version of this circuit that they're all wrong and it doesn't work. Your command of the English language is pretty awful. If I understand what you are attempting to convey, it would seem to indicate selling "enterprise grade computer parts" in quantity makes you an electronics guru or engineer. If that logic works, attempt trading in your frequent flyer miles and upgrade to pilot the next time you travel. If you tried spreading your knowledge, it wouldn't cover a piece of toast let alone the world. Do us all a favor stay busy with your "orders" and refrain from posting uninformed comments. Actually I have programmed in assembly language and C ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect Jameco (and other companies) sell non-contact voltage sensor kits that are nearly the same circuit as the video demonstrated. Maybe you should buy one and improve your knowledge rather than advertise your ignorance. You can read more about the circuit or purchase a kit from here -> www.jameco.com/Jameco/workshop/JamecoFavorites/non-contact-AC-voltage-detector.html Even a simple Google search for something like "non-contact voltage sensor schematic" is going to yield similar results to the circuit demonstrated. Since he didn't use any current limiting resistors the voltage needed to be lowered to prevent burning up the components used in his version of the circuit. If you really want to be taken seriously and perceived as professional by other people improve your English skills. You should have used "break" instead of "brake", and "too" instead of the last "to" in the closing sentence. Sure this is neeto, but it's Nothing that hasn't been done before. The transistors are a Darlington Cascade of 3. Power to drive the LED comes from the battery. The unbiased base of the transistor means that the first stage will operate with maximum impedance for highest sensitivity. What that gives you, is the ability to see alternating magnetic fields.
@demef758
@demef758 4 жыл бұрын
Not quite true. It lets you detect AC VOLTAGES, not magnetic fields. It works by capacitance, utilizing the very large voltage swings of the AC power supply and capacitively coupling those voltage swings to the hi-z input of the 3-transistor Darlington. It doesn't take much capacitance to make it work. A pF or less will do it. The amplifier will half-wave rectify the signal, driving the LED.

Elsewhere in the comment section I found the transistor number BC547C, written as a disambiguation, so I'm guessing they knew what they were talking about. That's all I can tell you, I'm guessing you'll be able to work the rest of the circuit out from there, assuming limited varieties of led diodes. Otherwise I'm as clueless as you. Seems pretty safe to experiment with at 120VAC.
