Years ago when combines had no GPS I was helping a friend harvest one evening when it was EXTREMELY DUSTY with next to no visibility. I could not even see the pickup header due to the grain dust just hanging in the air. I could tell by the sound of the combine that something was just not correct so stepped out on the stairs platform and eventually realized I was accordingly trying to harvest the swaths perpendicular to the direction of the swaths. Eventually quit for the night as could not see enough to correct my cross swath combining errors.

Be grateful you have a cab. All of our tractors (some 40 years ago) were open station. We had to wear a mask or bandana around our face to help with the dust. Something to say about cover crops and crimping as you are planting to save the moisture and your soil that blows away.

@ascension8811
@ascension8811 3 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminwillson4988 They won't when you crimp them. They die and they become mulch which will retain moisture, just like in flower beds. The more biomass the better and it improves soil health, adds nutrients, suppresses weed pressure and eventually your top soil will retain even more moisture instead of having runoff that causes erosion or have lakes in the field because the soil can't absorb it fast enough and drown the crop. The channel farmingwithcarp does a very good job with it. You also can cut back on chemicals and eliminate them and use less fertilizer which has been a big problem with ground water, ponds and lakes.

Mike, bolt a chain, rubber belt, or leather strap, onto your equipment that will just drag on the ground. That makes a static ground that will help keep dust from clinging to your equipment. It is really effective on combines which are great static electricity generators. Tractors pulling tillage equipment not so much unless you are roading or pulling non-ground contact equipment. We always added a short length of chain to every customer's combine as a courtesy and to prove that their windows stayed cleaner.
@richardschipper5989

really? the drill has over 84 points in the ground at all times
@bigun447
@bigun447 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardschipper5989 I did say that tillage equipment is much less. However, just a small amount of static dissipation cannot hurt. Combines, sprayers, and other non-ground engaging equipment can definitely have an advantage. Yes, I know that some will say that the spray will discharge the static. Spray is in droplets, not solid streams. Any firefighter will know that a fire nozzle with a solid stream will conduct electricity but a nozzle that has a spinner that breaks water into droplets will not conduct most electrical charges. The seed moving thru the tubes on air drills, fertilizer on dry spreaders, and planters are huge static generators. The difference is that some are grounded thru metal contact and some are not. Simply adding a static strap or chain will greatly reduce the static charge that attracts dust to windows and etc. Just run a comb thru your hair a few times and watch it attract your hair when you hold it close to your arm or head.

The Jd has an exhaust powered prefilter, makes a big difference in how long you can run before it needs cleaning. Not familiar with Fendts, do they have one too? Back in my younger days, we only had open station tractors, no cabs. Can remember having to stop if you had a tail wind, and wait till the dust cleared because you couldn't see the planter mark to gauge you next pass. At the end of the day, what we blew out of our nose went in the garden for veggies.🤪

I used to farm and seed in dust like that in Central Oregon with no cab, no AC, no heat, no cell phone, no radio, no GPS or auto steering on a D6 cat. Talk about fun.. Many times pulled my shirt up in front of my mouth to filter some dust because it was so bad.. Mud in the bottom of the shower at the end of the day. One day I went over a rock and it shook the CAT pretty hard, bounced my lunch box out on the right track and I saw it go off the end of the front of the track just in time to run over it and I was hours from my pickup so suck it up buttercup. I still had a water jug, didn't need lunch on a 10 hour shift anyways. Lol The worst thing would be if you picked up some horse Flys that wouldn't leave you alone grrrrr. Sudden rain storms or hail storms kinda sucked too.
