WOW Founder and CEO Jude Kelly CBE sat down with Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss to discuss their new film TÁR. They talk about how the film explores power: what it means to want it; what it means to wield it; and ultimately how easy it is to be corrupted by it. Set in the traditionally male-dominated world of classical music, their conversation takes in hierarchy, marriage and accountability for oneself and others.
Todd Field's film introduces us to Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), the groundbreaking conductor of a major German Orchestra. We meet her at the height of her career, as she’s preparing both a book launch and much-anticipated live performance of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. Over the ensuing weeks her life begins to unravel in a singularly modern way. The result is a searing examination of power, and its impact and durability in today’s society.
WOW will be exploring all of these themes - and more - at the WOW Festival at Southbank Centre, which will take place 10-12 March. Details at thewowfoundation.com

That's because Nina Hoss isn't as famous as Cate Blanchett, people are so used to talking to Cate. You can observe Cate trying to shift the focus more to Nina in several other interviews

and hold it tightly so as if it is her most precious support on earth, a colunm of cold (the coffee) resistance. But nevertheless, she is diving deep into the texture of the story, brava.

Cate saved a very dreary film (for me, anyway) and I consider her, perhaps, the greatest actor/actress in the world. And she is so intelligent, empathetic and articulate in real life. Nina offered good support, but in the end, the story - as written and directed - didn't do much for me.

Blah, blah, blah. I've been a big classical music buff...especially Mahler...for more than 50 years. But I have no interest in watching this overly-long movie. Cate Blanchett is apparently brilliant in portraying an out-of-control female conductor actually becoming violent. I'm sure she's brilliant in the role. But there are far more important things going on in the world than this overblown psycho-drama. Portraying a woman of power in an unsympathetic role...especially when there have been many so male conductors of the past, and much more recently, who were abusive...there is nothing...zippo... in this that interests me. Yes, it may be a equally brilliant film. But I have better things to do with my time. Many others may feel the same. It certainly does nothing to advance the apparently diminishing interest in classical music....And poor Gustav M. in particular.

As someone who is also a fan of classical music and has watched the movie, I disagree. Tar is a very complex character and the music in itself but also the importance of music to Tar is one of the top priorities of the movie. I would also disagree that her role is unsympathetic: that was for me one of the most interesting things of the movie - Tar's crimes are never portrayed in an obvious fashion, one might even doubt what happened or if it happened although it is relatively clear. but as a viewer one gets mesmerized with the character either way and kind of just hopes she will figure it out. Of course - if you got no interest in the film at all you dont have any obligation to watch it but it is so much more nuanced than "me too". As Cate said in this interview: Everything is ambigous (except the movie where Tar is always very clear and precise).

I see why you'd assume this, but there is nothing formulaic about this film. As for putting a female in the role of one who abuses power... generally this movie isn't about gender (which surprised me), but if they made the character a straight, white male, we'd be a little desensitized to the problems because, as you mentioned, we've already seen that story too many times. As for this hurting classical music.... if people think this movie represents the entire reality of the industry, those already aren't your people who will "save" classical music.

This movie is all about Cate Blanchett’s acting. The whole plot makes little or no sense, its not interesting. No eyes wide shut …

Say you lack an attention span from watching 500 tik toks a day, without saying you lack an attention span. Yes, the movie is long, but very fast paced in its actions. It is a very ambiguous movie and something for strong minds. If that’s not your thing, don’t hate it.
