The end credits song was originally titled '564 years', which is the amount of time it would realistically take for the son to save enough money to buy the house. Also the son starts his letter with 'Dad, today I made a plan', but the 'no plan is the best plan' bit from earlier foreshadows how his plans are going to fail. So the ending scene was just a dream.

He didn't d*e because it's a hollow rock, a fake one. We found out about it when it starts floating in the water. It was implied that the rock brings them luck since everything was going well after they received it, but it's "false hope" like how the poorest of the poor would be impossible to get that rich in just a few years without getting lucky.

He was never able to buy that house. It was just in his imagination cuz realistically, it's impossible. Also, the son developed some brain problems after the incident as u can see him recording himself and smiling for no reason. The ending was like an empty promise made by a son to his father. He wants to buy it and save his dad but he doesn't have the money for it and also his dad's now a wanted murderer. The moment he steps out of the basement, he will end up in the prison. This movie did a really great job of showing classism. The poor would do anything to make their lives a little better but the rich just don't care and see people of lower status as replaceable pawns.

Don't know if you realized that the brother is the same actor from Train to Busan. The baseball player.

So the 2 guys in the beginning the son and his college friend are both BTS V's best friends. The son was also in Train to Busan. Speaking of them 3, they have a variety show where them 3 along with 2 or 3 other people open a Korean snack restaurant in Mexico called Jinny's Kitchen.

The whole movie is commentary on the disparity between the rich and the poor in Korea. That rich family did not care about their staff; none of them. So firing the original housekeeper/nanny without knowing where she'll live is not odd.

No, you don't overthink it during the discussion. The movie is filled with social commentary, the disparity between the rich and the poor. The poor family do have skills, are street smart. The dad had a chicken joint but had to close it, the mom had a medal on their wall, and the children are smart yet they can't afford going to college. It's hard to get a job without a degree from reputable universities. They even mentioned there were many college graduates apply for a security job opening. So the poor had to 'fight' with each other for the little opportunity they have. And the scene where the family fight with the old housekeeper & the husband over that phone is like a reminder of how two sides tried to secure their spot at the rich family house. And the conversation about the smell is like no matter what you do, it's just hard to get out out poverty. It sticks with you. While on the other hand, the rich are almost oblivion to this. They're not bad people, they're just a bit disconnected. For them, their staffs are disposable, they didn't even give the driver & the housekeeper the real reasons why they're fired. Or like you said, didn't even concern about where the housekeeper will stay after being fired. And ofc, the fact that the rich dad only care about his son when the poor daughter was literally bleeding from the stab. This movie hits so hard, it makes you think even beyond the story of this 2 family, it just kinda like a reminder of the world we live in.

The use of stairs to point out the difference in social class is also note-worthy and I believe that's the reason why they won Best Picture at the Oscars. This movie is amazing and I can never get tired of seeing people react to it.

On the surface, the semi-basement family was the parasite trying to get jobs from one rich family , and then an even lower (literally & figuratively) parasite in the form of the guy in the rich house basement. But if you look further, the rich family is pretty insensitive and tone deaf about the suffereing of the people around them, the way they subtly treat their helpers as less of a person even when they can't even function without them and abuse their socail status so their helpers can't say no to every demand from them... like, who's the real parasite here?

honestly, this was a masterpiece. every frame was well thought out. from the flow of the movie and the architecture of the settings. it was all made carefully. a commentary between the rich and poor.

I feel like parasite is a movie that should be watched more than once. In the first watch there is so much to take in that you miss the intricate details and symbolism scattered throughout the movie. The social commentary is loud but is also present in the tinniest details.

i saw this movie like 4yrs ago in theater and i couldn't see any movies that beat this one since then. that's how good this is. open to plenty of interpretations. bong is just a genius.

I feel like the sister Ki-Jung (Jessica) was the only one who died because she was the one who had the most to gain if she had lived. The rest of the family was there because there was a job position already existing but she was the only one who made her role there. She seemed to be the most talented, the most aware of their circumstances and the likeliest to succeed and be rich legitimately. Maybe it was a reality check about how hard it really is to get ahead in life. Another theory, which I heard and it makes a lot of sense from a storytelling point of view: when the family was all drunk and talking about living in the house and how she says she deserves it and asking which room she would want if she could live there. In the "end", she was the only family member not able to live in the house. Mindblowing stuff honestly.

The richer you are the higher the houses and them being the poorest, they live all the way down. And also the part when his friend was convincing him to tuitor the rich girl, the director said right after the friend said the illegal part the bus pass by Choi's back. The director said it's just Choi's dream that someday if he gets rich, but when is the impossible part since they are very poor. Just a wishful dream. So the director Bong Joon-Ho (a gem btw) said that him and his team actually sat down and calculated how long it would take the son to actually afford the house, including every aspect of expenses, his criminal background, his lack of nobility in getting a job, his head injury, etc and it was over 500 years. Another one of the reasons it is implied that he will never succeed with that plan and the dad probably dies down there.

The son took the rock to the basement to kill the man. Just like earlier he took the rock to fight the man urinating. He sees the rock as a weapon (as part of himself) to help him do what he himself cannot do. The wife said the rich woman was nice because it's easy to be nice when you are rich, which is the theme of the movie.

Fun fact: the dad, actor Song Kang Ho, was also in Snowpiercer. He was the one who realized the snow was falling and things were meting outside. I remembered Daniel mentioning he watched the movie during their BTS Spring Day reaction.

Also a very interesting thing if you would like to check for yourself: throughout the WHOLE film, literal lines are used across the screen to note if a character has 'crossed the line' or not. In case this is vague, an example: in the scene where the housekeeper is trying to wake the rich lady when the brother visits them for the first time, the line of the window is symbolized as a line that the housekeeper crossed when she leaned forward to clap the rich lady awake. You can see sooooo many of these throughout the movie. If anyone can count the exact instances, please let me know!!!

I think the reason why the dad was not affected by the fumigation smoke is because every able body man has to go serve in the military in South Korea and one of the things they do is put the soldiers in a smoke chamber with masks but they have to take off the canister that the mask has, so I think that’s why he wasn’t as affected as the rest of the family. The actor that played as the son is also the baseball kid in Train to Busan AND he is V’s friend along with the actor that played the college guy that recommended the son to the family. I love all of the actors that appear in this movie

In my opinion, i think the old housekeeper went back to her own house after she got fired coz she got nowhere else to go, that's why when she came back to the rich family's house she's all beaten up, the debt collector found her there and beat her up since she can't pay for the debt. (The debt collector couldn't find her before because she usually lives in the rich people's house as an in-house maid)

The actors that play the son and his college friend are two of Taehyung's best friends, and the son was also in train to Busan as the baseball player. South Korea is a mountainous country. Even the major cities have lots of steep hills like you saw. Not too long after this movie came out, Seoul had massive rains and apts like theirs flooded. The then president and emergency services basically did nothing for those people.

If you want a similar Korean movie, please look into "Memories of Murder (2003)" from the same director (Bong Joon-ho). The story in that one is based on a real unsolved case, and it has a similar slow-burn vibe, but will keep you on your toes the whole time.

I recommend a lot of Korean movies! Especially a movie starring a Ha Jung-woo actor. For example, The Chaser, Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, The Berlin File, Tunnel, Hijack 1971, Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time. Arguably the most prime example of a group of people having their home invaded and taken away, using all the little symbolic Indian elements throughout the house used by the boy... and then using the man in the basement rise up from the proverbial grave, in literal redface, and seeking his revenge in an actual massacre... just brilliant. There are no hints to that effect, and I've never heard that interpretation. it's possible but I've never caught any hint of that. 34:35 The housekeeper was a live-in. 50:22 Note the guest that arrived in the black/yellow taxi, those color taxis are 3 times the cost of normal cabs. The cars are not any nicer, it's purely a flex. The ending is open to interpretation, I personal don't think he'll ever buy that house. That's only his plan, but who knows? The comments about the rock being hollow/fake is the reason Kevin survived, it's possible but that's just a theory made by fans. To me, however hollow it is you can see how they handle it there is heft to it. It's still a dangerous weight that can kill someone if you smash their head in with it. The theory does fit nicely with the theme of the movie, if Bong Joon Ho added that detail intentionally, kudos to him. I just explain Kevin surviving to luck. People survive crazy stuff all the time, they fall out of planes, take 10 bullets, survive bear attacks, etc. I also like to tie that in with all the bad luck that happened to them, like being so clumsy at the worst times.

Personally, Bong Joon-ho's best movie is Memories Of Murder 2003. This movie is definitely one of the best in the history of Korean movies this century I recommend you to enjoy it.

One major thing to remember when watching K movies and dramas: it's the culture of South Korea. Your thought process of what they did, or do, or offering suggestion your thoughts has to line up with the Korean culture, not the U.S. Watch the movie, and listen closely before adding your comments. Shy over a sex scene when you both are married to each with kids. It's an adult movie being watched by adults.

The reason why he killed him at the end. in my opinion. The father had had huge respect for the rich family. specially the rich dad. as you saw his lines where he says how nice the lady is even she is rich. However everytime whenever he showed his respect or trying to be close to him. the rich dad drew the line. like the conversation in the car. or in the costume. and the way how rich mom covered her nose in the car. And i think the poor family dad saw himself in the guy from basement. because they both have invested in to business and went broke ( both of them have invested in taiwan bakery business. The dad gives the look when the poor guy mentioned it.) So when the poor dad saw how he covered his nose. I guess he felt betayed and humilated cause thats how he sees him and the guy . Also about the last scene. I dont think its what happened. Cause when they had to sleep in the gym. the dad said the best plan is to have no plan. and the son in the end said he will makes a plan for it . so ya i dont think it actually happend or will happen
