I read a book a couple months back called "Feed." Basically there was a zombie outbreak but it was put under control really quickly, though they still exist and there are still places in the world that people cannot go into because of insufficient pacification. Most striking to me were the regulations. You could not enter any building without being tested, buildings cannot have windows on the first floor, etc. World War Z (the book, not the movie) is another good example of zombies just being a fact of everyday life and not a world ending apocalypse, though it was pretty brutal initially. Very interesting concepts.

The reason movies and shows start in the apocalypse is to instill a sense of hopeless and constant terror, it is arguably the scariest part of the concept of zombies. That is why showing the military destroying the undead or an effective quarantine would take away a lot of the tension.

An effective quarantine in this situation, would have involved the soldiers letting the people (who were obviously still in control of their minds) out of the building, and then transporting them to a controlled environment. Not sealing everyone inside the building and leaving them to their own devices. That not only guarantees that they all get infected, but also risks a containment breach due to survivors attempting to escape.

I think the living is the reason why the zombies took over the way it did. If you look at all the Romero films, the humans were much of a problem as the undead. In Night of The Living Dead for an example, if wasn't so much tension, miscommunication and disorganization among the group, they would have survived the night and would have been rescued my the posse and the girl would have been the only casualty.

Even in Dawn of The Dead you see there's still a lot of arguments about what to do as politicians politicize the outbreak while the lone scientist lays out what they need to do. Plus you have to think, while the rural areas of Night of The Living Dead and Dawn of The Dead would generally be better equipped to handle an outbreak, major populated cities wouldn't and the virus would spread faster and wider than rural areas. Major cities would be lost in days and then you'd have massive hordes of the undead sweeping rural zones

Without hearing protection your eardrums would be damaged, stopping you from hearing the zombie behind you. To me, it’s not the fact the these zombies are difficult to kill (because they are NOT), it’s the feeling of hopelessness in the Romero movies that, to me, would make it difficult to survive. Romero’s movies always highlighted the conflicts of the group dynamics first, zombies second. Cooper and Ben arguing about to reinforce the house or the cellar, Helen and Sarah desperately trying to remain practical in the midst of their own sorrow (Helen’s daughter, Miguel losing it), people panicking and making stupid mistakes, hordes of dangerous gangs who will take what you have at any cost. You never really know WHY the dead have been resurrected (you have ideas, but nothing solid) and that’s the huge issue: WHY is this happening? Theres no cure, no reversal, no government that swoops in to reinstall civilization, nothing. With each movie installment, you are watching the slow decay of society. In the third one, they even admit to flying a helicopter 100 miles each way and finding no one. Frankenstein (Logan) even said “[i reckon]…they outnumber us at about 400,00 to 1, I assume.” Even though the zombies are slow, lumbering, and relatively easy to kill, it’s the psychological effect that I think would devastate people. What’s the point? There’s nowhere safe and for every one I kill, there are a thousand more. That’s the whole point of the second one, they have every single supply they could ever need but the psychological toils become too much (as Peter nearly shoots himself because he can’t bear to run anymore. Out of all the effort and trust he put into this place, in the end it means nothing..) and I think that’s the big thing here; in the end it all means nothing. Despite Ben’s desperate efforts to keep everyone alive and the house safe, everyone dies. Despite peter’s efforts to secure the mall, nearly everyone dies and the mall is ransacked. Despite Sarah’s scientific research and sacrifice, it means nothing and is left behind to rot in the compound. In the 4th, the city is overrun and nearly everyone dies. Long story short, I think the zombies aren’t the issue in this series: it’s human nature itself. When there’s no point to living, why keep on? What are you looking for? “So I ask you again Captain, where will you go?”

Well, not quite. Unlike The Walking Dead, Romero’s zombies ARE difficult to kill, particularly for an average, unarmed person. A simple tap on the head with a kitchen knife doesn’t cut it in his movies. Add to that the emotional difficulties people are having dealing with the situation, seeing dead friends and loved ones returning as mindless hungry corpses determined to kill them, and you have a situation that is ‘t exactly as straightforward as this video makes it sound. It isn’t accurate to say these movies, Night, Dawn, or Day, aren’t about the zombies, and they aren’t a threat in them. They definitely ARE, but Romero was so skilled at writing realistic characters that it is only natural the humans tend to leave more of an impression.

As a die-hard Romero fan, I agree wholeheartedly. This is a universe in which zombies do not exist, so what people are witnessing are their family members attacking and eating each other. You begin to slowly realize that every single person who dies from anything other than a headshot comes back. People have to put that out of their heads and kill their loved ones. A large portion of humanity will not be mentally prepared to handle that right there on the spot because in that time they have to either run or fight or they're dead. I think knowing you will come back is another detrimental aspect. Just being alive makes you a danger to everyone else. That's heavy. Romero knew how to fill the audience with dread and hopelessness. He dangles hope in front of you in Night, but then rips it all away. Gives you a little more dread in Dawn but gives some more hope again with the mall and allowing two survivors and by time Day came out the entire world was just taken and hopelessness set in and nobody really has much hope at all anymore at that point, and the span of those 3 movies is only about maybe a year or two. Dawn is like 3 weeks after Night and Day is vague but seems to be maybe about a year in. If you ever get a chance you should definitely check out the original Day script!

It would make sense that they would be able to move faster than a shuffle, ironically the over use of musle and lack of repair would leave them more of an ankle biter issue in the future. It would just depend on the person, someone who has little muscle mass would barely show stiffness after possibly 12 hours and people with more muscle will begin to stiffen up sooner in 4 hours tops. Guerilla warfare focuses on whittling away at a target's strength till they are on your level, at which point you seize important targets. No wonder the undead corpse in NOTLD seems smarter too, that they could use a thing to broke a window when they a victim inside it. For example, Barbara tried to run and quickly got into car but then the male ghoul picked a brick to smash the car window to caught her. It was a ghoul as we recall. Even Romero has said, the treat in NOTLD was a ghoul. Zombie infection started in Dawn Of The Dead. There are difference between Ghoul & Zombie. As I say, ghoul are smarter

Also there is a child zombie that is pushing around a hockey stick pushing a puck around on the ice. Here's a thought... When a person gets killed by zombies, could they reanimate in the time it takes for them to be eaten? Also, how dead is too dead for a zombie to eat? Do they stop eating as soon as the life is gone from the victim? If not, what prevents them from eating each-other, especially in a world where the living are also infected to begin with, as the infection would otherwise be a barrier for the living? Romero was a sympathetic cynic and never made his films as dark as he wanted them to be. Just about every zombie film he ever directed though made it very clear that the primary danger was desperate people and their proclivity for tyranny and amathia, no matter how petty. Death by zombie in these films although frequent is actually secondary to the message that society becomes its own worst enemy where we cling to ignorance, prejudice, and materialism, as our fickle reality is threatened - especially the further away we remove ourselves from the natural order, as we have done so in becoming a society completely dependent on convenience. Two years ago the world became paralyzed by a bunch of flu symptoms. We'd crumble if a zombie apocalypse came along. I'd probably survive a few months after my meds ran out. That's okay though, probably proportional to the number of tins of Spam I can afford at any one time.

There is a massive difference between going on a shoot-‘em-up or hunting trip and keeping watch 24-7 in sufficient numbers and alertness to detect and repel these random and endless waves. Especially once the zombies evacuate the cities and start roaming for food. Romero zombies are absolutely something humans could survive in large numbers, but many populations would succumb. You have to get organized, erect defenses, and set up infrastructure for maintaining a community and do it fast. If you take too long then their will be a hole in your scouting or guard screens, or simply a group of zombies much larger than you expected. Not to mention food and water. You beat the zombies quickly as a society, you set up enclaves to rebuild, you become nomadic, or populations will die off.

A really good use of the "small outbreak" concept was the movie Little Monsters (2018). I also recommend it because it's hilarious.

I think the most dangerous type of classic zombie is in like the game "project zomboid" where the virus was airborne and only 10% of the population or less is immune to that strain.

I feel like the Dead Rising games are a pretty good example of what could happen. Outbreak areas are quickly blocked off, survivors are rescued and checked by the military or turned away if infected, then the area is destroyed or the zombies wiped out.

Ya know... before this pandemic, I assumed a Zombie outbreak happening in the US would be very unlikely for many of the same reasons you mentioned here. Now having watched how people handled this... I am not so sure.

I reckon Romero would've liked Fido from 2006 with Billy Connelly. It came to the same conclusion you mentioned. People adapted and eventually lived by a set of rules but nothing much changed for them. Even funerals ended with two separate compartments one with the body and the head in the other

do they need air or oxygen to exist though?. cause it's been itching me abit that if a zombie did try to cross a very very deep body's of water, they would be deprived of oxygen, which the brain needs to function

So about headshots to kill, now that I think about it people have survived getting serious brain trauma such as getting shot in the head or impaled through the brain(aka Phineas Gage, etc). So would you need to shoot a specific portion or not?

Depends on the bullet and depends on if you primary aim for the forehead/brain. Hit the brain, they drop like bricks, don't and they're still coming at you. Of course it loops back to what bullet you are using. if it's a common bullet type, like pistol or rifle, it'll take 1 or 2 to the brain to down, if not then several to pop the skull. Larger then that like .50 cal or other large bullets would do significant damage to the head even if it's not hitting the brain as the explosion of the skull fragments would vaporize the brain. Same with spinal damage too.

the R complex (deep in the centre of the brain) is presented in Day of The Dead as the area of the brain responsible for a reanimated bodies agressive behaviour. Destroy that you are all good.

Honestly I like this look at how adaptive people would really be. Honestly in real life zombies would be hunted down not just by military but by many average folk who want to protect life or flat out have a psychopathic excuse to hunt people. A lot of good zombie horrors are like Romero's where it's the people's miscommunication and issues that cause their downfall. The militant might of humanity is not to be underestimated.

@@jessesdomain444 maybe, but then being part of a group and working together is by far the best strategy for dealing with a society collapse. You need people to watch your back, watch THEIR own AOR so you don't get caught napping or bit when your pants are down. Also not playing hero with an AR and a plate carrier. Most people who are itching for a chance to engage the enemy, working alone etc would end up dead long before their personal stash of freeze dried MREs ran out.

I think this whole idea is forgetting one of the main plot points from Dawn of the Dead that the outbreak is getting completely out of control because a majority of people don't want to kill the zombies, they think they can be cured or redeemed so they are actively hiding their presence from the authorities who are seeking to round them up and cremate their corpses.

I never thought about the strain a Zombie would suffer on their legs, I'd say 80% of the population doesn't have legs that can constantly walk for hours on end let alone days. Running constantly would greatly increase that strain, most running zombies would probably end up shattering their legs within a day or two depending on their activity. Pain tolerance aside, zombies would be stacking injuries on their legs due to their inability to rest and would eventually destroy their own bones.
