I'm going to start mtb I already have a hardtail, and I use clipless on my road bike, should I use clipless on mtb or start with flat pedals?

Definitely start in flats, it will help you progress and improve much easier.

Yeah, starting with flats means that you won’t develop bad habits such as pulling up with the clip in shoes etc.

I've only ever used flats. if you want to learn jumps/tricks flats are your best option.
