Hello from Colorado! This year's elk hunting camp found us in need of a chainsaw. A quick purchase of a cheap Poulan brand saw from Wal-Mart proved to be a mistake. I recalled that you were a Stihl user and, after returning the nearly nonfunctional saw to Wal-Mart, I went and bought my own Stihl. That saw was such a joy to use as it was powerful and sliced the wood up like it was cutting warm butter. What a great purchase! Thank you for your guidance, you have taught me a great deal and have not led me astray.

Excellent series for anyone who is interested in cutting their own wood.. I didn’t learn how to do any of this. I do appreciate learning new things especially now with the way things are going on in our world. I was just talking with my brother Jack about making a move to where he lives off the grid. Cody I sure need your prayers for strength and a renewal for God’s Grace. 👍

I am a native West Texan with a chainsaw (dangerous combination as West Texas has ZERO TREES). I now live on property in the central Texas region (more trees, but nothing like the PNW). Anyway, I have read a ton on proper chain tension, and yours BY FAR makes the most sense. I have seen a ton of your videos and really have found joy in them. Thanks for putting these out there.

thankyou for the advice on the ms260. I've just picked up a well cared for second hand beast for a hundred pounds here in the UK. changed it to 3/8s semi chisel skip as a project over the summer and it goes like a train even in oak. excellent videos as always and keep up the grand work.

Anyone else here watching old saw and axe videos while practicing social distancing or am I the only one? I figure since I can't go to the office it's a good time to do some of those projects around the property I've been neglecting. It's easy to be a little depressed about the lack of work and lack of $$$. Sure helps combat that to take a little pride in what the Lord has already provided. Cut up the windfall trees, split some firewood, clean out the gardens, service my saws and axes....

My father sworn by Stihl equipment. Chainsaw (024), Brushcutter (dunno, it's the backpack one)... Both still working OK after what must be 20 years. I'm working on their maintenance now, they've been neglected a bit, not rusty or anything, but dirty and some wear and tear, which is a somewhat dangerous proposition. Not the kind of equipment to be trifled with. Thanks for all the advice, they'll help.

Really good to see someone properly maintaining, and appreciating a decent bit of equipment. Only thing I do extra, and its well worth it, is to get a T27 and quickly remove the starter. You'll find a big build up of oily crud covering the coil, and impeding the air flow from the flywheel to the cooling fins. Nice to blow from the outside, but it does not remove much. And yeah, when I clean my bars I wash the sprocket tip in gas, blow it out, and squirt some bar oil in the sprocket tip....maybe I'm a little pedantic, but here in New Zealand a 30 inch bar and chain for a big Stihl runs well over $200, so its a few seconds well spent oiling it.Thanks for the videos, good to see equipment being serviced well!

It's good you take care of your bar's tip bearings. Most saws other than Stihl still have a hole or two for greasing the nose bearings. And it is important, so those bearings don't fail. (Stihl has sealed bearings, which I don't trust.) But I would like to say, I finish any treatment with a good greasing. Then I roll the chain a bit and grease it some more, to get the grease through all the roller bearings. It also flushes out anything that is in there anyway. As with all things with chain saws, read your manual. I'm sure all saws come with one, and they are usually quite thorough.

Wrangler Star, first off thank you so much for what you do and for what you stand for. I wanted to take some time to share something with you that has made my life better. I'm not sure if you have used or heard of Amsoil Engine Fogging oil but it is probably the single best product I use. It's cheap to by, and it really reduces my time bring my small engine back online after being in storage. I use it anytime one of my small engines might be out of use for more than a month. I know if I use this simple easy to use product my engines are going to start easily. You could probably winterize a chainsaw 100 times with a single eight dollar can. I have used it on my father's power back up generator, and pressure washer as well and he told me that after using his 20 year old pressure washer after fogging it the previous fall that it worked as well as it did the first year he had it. After that I was sold. I am a regular consumer/home owner and look for anything that will make my maintenance experience better, and this product well exceeds my personal criteria to continue purchasing a product. I wish you the best for the future and if you'd like I will send you a can so you can try it for your self. Best Regards, Jimmy

My neighbor was cleaning his barn and threw out 3 chain saw which I snagged. Stihl MS290, Stihl 019T and a homelite 410. I spent about two hours draining the old fuel out and adding a new fuel mix and with more then a few pulls they all started and ran good. They all need new chains and 1 bar. For about $150 +/-in parts and your good tips on tune ups I'll have some good saw for a while!! Not a bad find.

To add to Cody’s info, you can “fog” a two stroke. The fogging oil is available at any auto part store. Follow directions and it will keep the bottom end of the engine coated in oil so you can let it sit without starting it to lube.

A 260 is the way to go they are not made anymore it is the 261 never ran one and haven't heard any feed back. The 260 was originally designed for tree thinning operations they are light they have decent power and run a maxium 24 inch bar in soft woods. White and orange is Pro saws Orange Black is the homeowner saw. Suggestion for Cody can you do a video on the Stihl fuel and oil caps I don't know how many complaints I hear from people that can't use them.

not to be a wise guy or anything but you forgot to mention whyle servicing your bar, if you have a bar with those little bearings on the tip of the bar with those little tips (i know my Oregon bar has it), it has a grease hole on eather side, and its wise to get some grease inthere every time you sharpen or change your chain. You use a special tool for this, dunno what is called, but it looks like a big pen witch is filled with grease and when you push down on the tip grease comes out of said tip.

We did some thrade with other neutral nations during the cold war, but there wasnt any major foren companies present then. Also found 5 extra chains today and thanks to your videos im in the middle of "restoring" them via a gasoline bath overnight :)
@michaeldougfir9807
@michaeldougfir9807 7 жыл бұрын
BloodRaven: You are exactly correct about greasing your saw bar tip. Almost all chainsaw bars have 1 or 2 grease holes at the tip. Stihl saws have NOT had this for years. You can't maintain a Stihl bar tip. That's a sealed bearing. I DO NOT TRUST SEALED BEARINGS. If you maintain it, you should know that it is taken care of. What I like to do is, push grease in the hole till it comes out someplace else. Then I roll the chain several inches, and I grease it again. By doing this I clear out chips, grit and anything that is not good for precision bearings. And I KNOW the bearings are well greased. I have known men to replace the bar on their Stihl saw with another brand of bar, when it needed changing. Then they gained the ability to maintain the roller or sprocket in the tip.

Hey Cody, I have a question. Recently I purchased a Husky 460. When I purchased the saw I got into a conversation with the saw mechanic where I bought it. He was telling me that for my new saw I should use a 94 octane fuel that I buy thats already pre-mixed instead of buying fuel at the pump and then mixing it myself. He said that the fuel at the pump is a lot leaner than the mixed fuel that you buy in a can. For the past decade I have been running chainsaws on fuel that I mix myself and have had no problems. I was graciously hoping you could give me your opinion on this situation. Thank you, Alex
@michaeldougfir9807
@michaeldougfir9807 7 жыл бұрын
This is an expensive proposition. But you are wise to ask about it. I agree with Cody and others who now say to use the higher octane gasoline. I keep a couple of sealed cans of the pre-mixed fuel around for a big emergency, but I don't think it is so special as to be used on an average day. And if one of these is opened, I use it up and replace it. I like to keep it sealed until it is needed. Be sure to get the right mix ratio.
