I unwrap the handlebars on a vintage Schwinn Continental bike and rewrap them using the same factory pattern using plastic handlebar tape.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this video - I thought there was a slim-to-none chance this very specific type of tutorial would be online, but bingo, here it is! Thanks RJ!!!!!! This tutorial rocks!!!

This isn't the correct way to install the tape. And I'm not sure of how the bars get "factory wrapped", since every one of the thousand or so Schwinns I put together out of the box had NO bar tape, I had to wrap them all myself! (age 70, own too many bikes to count, and worked at four Schwinn dealerships in all, from 1970 at age 16 up to 1996, when I went into another line of work.) Anyway, before doing any wrapping, you cut about 3-4" of tape from each of the two rolls. This gets wrapped onto the brake lever post (a little clear adhesive tape helps), around the backside of the handlebar, so that it covers an otherwise-bare spot on each side of each brake post's base. Then, when wrapping the bar, a loop of the main roll goes around the circumference of the post, which is sometimes called a "Schwinn wrap". There are literally hundreds of photos online where examples can be seen. Now, no one has to wrap them this way just because I'm saying so, but if someone wants their old Schwinn to look truly original, it's just best practices I'm only sayin'.

Can confirm that contemporary English bar taping practice was just about identical. My 1967 Hercules Hustler's bars were certainly factory-taped in a very similar fashion. When I came to redo them, you wouldn't believe how much tape was stuffed into each end - must have been over a foot.

I always cut the tape at an angle so it looks neater but also it is not to big at one end, when you try push it in the hole.

I just bought a 74 Le Tour that still has the original tape on it. Words can not describe how unpleasant feeling it is. Zero padding whatsoever. 5 miles on that thing I was giving thanks to the cork gods. Other that that it's a cool bike. Steal certainly is real.

I have an old new to me Schwinn, and want to re-wrap the bars. Was thinking of going to cork tape but now am thinking of trying to find some vintage style tape. Do you remember where you found yours?
@RJTheBikeGuy

Ebay or Amazon I am pretty sure. Don't wrap top down with cork type tapes. The tape with roll at the edges.

Hey rj,I have a vintage road bike..I'm planning on putting a trigger shifter from a mountain bike,are the diameter of their handle bars standard? mountain bike and road bike? Trigger shifter are way cheaper than sti shifter,I just want to hack some shifter to it so I could enjoy my bike more..
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 5 жыл бұрын
I am assuming you mean put them on drop bars? Don't do that. It's very ugly. The brake levers will be poorly positioned. You will need to change the front derailleur. It's a crappy hack.

Have you noticed any difference in the way the spokes are laced into the hubs compared to modern hand lacing techniques?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 8 жыл бұрын
+John H I don't understand your question?
@OjStudios
@OjStudios 8 жыл бұрын
+John H There is a difference. Older style is under-under-under and new one is under-under-over. I don't really understand why because it just adds unnecessary sideways tension.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 8 жыл бұрын
I see a lot more 4 cross lacing on older bikes as opposed the 3 cross now.

+RJ The Bike Guy I'm trying to replace the spokes in my 73 Super Sport. The hub is worn(rub marks on the flange) where the old ones were laying. Using the videos I've found on the internet, with a 3 cross method, I cant seem to get the spokes to line up with the old rub marks. In researching I've read that production builders lace all the spokes into the hub at once. I was wondering if this could be the cause. I haven't tried yet but if half the trailing and crossing spokes are spun in an opposite direction from the opposing side would it matter? Perhaps I'm over thinking it. Thanks for all the great videos. =)

I have no idea how production builders lace wheels. It could be they were laced 4 cross. I am not an expert on all the methods of wheel building.

If you add dawn and hydrogen peroxide in to a zip lock bag you can clean and refuse the original bar wrap as long as it is not torn.

Modern tape is thicker softer and tends to roll up at the edges when wrapped top down. Older plastic and cloth tapes did not have that problem. I thought I mentioned that in the video.
@servan79
@servan79 8 жыл бұрын
+RJ The Bike Guy yes but you only say how that is reversely taped at 0:40 but you don't say that it doesn't roll up at the edges doing so. i was wondering if the same problem would happen here. thanks for the answer...

Why did the way of wrapping the bars change?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Because they went from stiff non-stretching tape to softer, cushier tape that will roll at the edges under hand pressure. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7WiftOryp-cmpc.html

RJ The Bike Guy my Tempo has a white tape that isn’t quite as cushy as tape today but it’s definitely not like tape you’re using here... it’s definitely a step more comfortable but who knows if still available... it looks like they started wrapping at the top... it’s original and it’s never seemed to get funky from usage... does that sound right? I like the no electrical tape look especially with white wrap... what to do?! ....
