Documentary review of the first ever World Rally Championship event - Rallye Monte Carlo 1973 - reported by John Davenport. The entry list for the classic event featured such rallying legends as Björn Waldegard, Sandro Munari, Jean-Luc Therier, Bernard Darniche, Ove Andersson, Harry Kallström, Jean-Pierre Nicolas, Jean-Claude Andruet, Jean Ragnotti as well as the Flying Finns line-up with Timo Mäkinen, Simo Lampinen, Rauno Aaltonen and Hannu Mikkola.

Magnificent...nice blend of documentary and action, fantastic to see the A110, Fulvia and 240Z in full slide mode ;) The final result saw an impressive five A110s in the top six! Thanks very much for uploading.

The best historic rally film that I have seen. Interesting camerawork, great music, those fabulous 70s rally cars ( although We never see much of the Saab contingent) plus the relaxed, knowledgeable commentary of the superb John Davenport, perfect!!!

The best part of the video is 12:52-13:20, 17:24- 19:29, and 21:07-22:03. This is what the WRC needs today

Great stuff. Some real drama. I loved the camera car sequences following rally cars racing. Great soundtrack. I would have loved to see an original version. Thank you for uploading this. Who did the soundtrack?

I never understood, what is the point to driving fast in these old rallies if you have to arrive NO SOONER THAN a specified time? Seems to me the event was more about precision than speed? What's stopping drivers from just driving super fast and then pulling over a couple turns before the end so they check in on time (like what current WRC drivers do on the liason sections).

It was not very well explained but take a look at 4:19 - 4:27 .You'll see a list of drivers starting from different places all over Europe to get to Monte Carlo where the real rally starts. So Lancia and Fiat started from Rome (Italy), others started from Francfort (Germany), Glasgow (Schotland), Athenes (Greece), Varsovie (Poland), Oslo (Norway) etc. Those routes went over public roads with other traffic and local traffic rules like maximum speed etc. All cars would come to Monte Carlo and then the 'real' rally would begin, so from there on it's closed roads, no other traffic and going for the quickest times. So some drivers did allready drive 2000 KM before the start of the actual rally !
