The Wright R-1820 Cyclone 9 is an American radial engine developed by Curtiss-Wright, widely used on aircraft in the 1930s through 1950s. It was produced under license in France as the Hispano-Suiza 9V or Hispano-Wright 9V, and in the Soviet Union as the Shvetsov M-25.
The R-1820 Cyclone 9 represented a further development of the Wright P-2 engine dating back to 1925. Featuring a greater displacement and a host of improvements, the R-1820 entered production in 1931. The engine remained in production well into the 1950s.
The R-1820 was built under license by Lycoming, Pratt & Whitney Canada, and also, during World War II, by the Studebaker Corporation. The Soviet Union had purchased a license for the design, and the Shvetsov OKB was formed to metricate the American specification powerplant for Soviet government-factory production as the M-25, with the R-1820's general design features used by the Shvetsov design bureau for many of their future radials for the Soviet air forces through the 1940s and onwards. In Spain the R-1820 was license-built as the Hispano-Suiza 9V or Hispano-Wright 9V.[1]
The R-1820 was at the heart of many famous aircraft including early Douglas airliners (the prototype DC-1, the DC-2, the first civil versions of the DC-3, and the limited-production DC-5), every wartime example of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and Douglas SBD Dauntless bombers, the early versions of the Polikarpov I-16 fighter (as the M-25), and the Piasecki H-21 helicopter.
The R-1820 also found limited use in armoured vehicles. The G-200 variant developed 900 hp (670 kW) at 2,300 rpm and powered the strictly experimental M6 Heavy Tank.
D-200 Diesel
The Wright R-1820 was converted to a diesel during World War II by Caterpillar Inc. as the D-200 and produced 450 hp (340 kW) at 2,000 rpm in the M4A6 Sherman.
The Wright Aeronautical Corporation was formed in 1919, initially to develop liquid-cooled Hispano-Suiza V8 engines under license. The Corporation's first original design, the R1, was also the first successful high-powered radial in the USA. Funded by contracts from the US Navy for new air-cooled radials, Wright started a new design (initially called the P2) in 1924. The resignation of Frederick Rentschler to form the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company, along with several key engineering personnel, seriously affected the development of the P2 and it did not go into production.
In 1932, the R-1750 was developed to a capacity of 1823 cu in. This was the F model Cyclone, designated R-1820. This engine introduced a forged aluminum crankcase and was developed through the 1930s to reach 890 hp. It used a General Electric supercharger, and Wright concluded that this feature limited the potential power output of the engine. For the next development, the G-Series of 1937, Wright developed its own single-speed supercharger. The G-series was developed to deliver 1200 hp at 2500 rpm and made up the bulk of R-1820 Cyclone production during World War 2. It was installed in the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. The final phase of development of the single-row radial design was the H-Series at 1350 hp. A licensed, metricated variant was developed as the Shvetsov M-25.

DIRT CHEAP - I just bought one ! ! ! Can't believe it. I used to fly radial engined airplanes from Otters to C-47 and later the C-46. You are right as rain - on the inter webs this kit is priced like gold. But, for the price of a 1/24 car or truck kit I get THIS - NEW too. Thanks Atlantis and Thank You Chris for this build. Great job - both of ya.

Being an ex-mechanic who has built a lot of radial engines, I am not going to nitpick a thing. You built a lovely model and I have seen tons of radials that were custom painted. But I will mention one thing that you might like to know: the "exhaust" pipes as you called them, are actually the intake pipes from the carb manifold. It looks like the kit does not include any exhaust stubs.

Was wondering why the carb, was so close to exhaust manifold, oh it wasnt! Thanks for pointing out to us!!

Very nice Engine Model. I would display it next to a DC-3 model. I would like to extend the propeller to it's full size but the stand would also need to be taller. This one together with the Allison turbo prop engine are a must to have.

I believe Studebaker built the Wright 9 under license. Where I worked they built the B-25 engines. Which was a double row engine.
@6h471
@6h471 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they did. Years ago I saw the Sentimental Journey B17 at an air show, and looked at the crankcase builders tags. 1 was built by Wright Aeronautical. 2 by General Motors, 1 by Studebaker. The turbochargers were all labeled Allis Chalmers.

Wowzers, that's a handsome model. I'll definitely be looking for one as this was my introduction to engines at airplane school back in the day where we learned to tear them down and rebuild. We even ran them up in a test cell with a similar prop (and our fingers crossed). Good Times. Would be a real kick to build it.

That’s Awesome Cool. I like how you do the birds eye view of the preassemblies. Watching this video reminds me of a custom Monogram 1/48 B-17 I’m going to build, eventually. Although I know that all the details I’m wanting to add to it, won’t be seen, I’m still going to get all of the detail parts for it and build it as detailed as I possibly can. My grandfather Styve was a bombardier on B-17’s during WWII, over in Europe.

I have GOT to get one of these! It's been far too long since I built a model straight out of the box with only detail painting to come out with a nice, finished display piece! And that "Made in the USA" is the icing on the cake! That said, the comment at 3:30 should be amended to, ". . . have mom make you a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup." We didn't have "Hot Pockets" back in the day when this kit was new and I was just old enough to build a model this complex without parental help. Thanks for posting this review and build tutorial!

I know very well this lovely gluing kit and I bought it in Belgium in little shop handled by a nice old guy, early eighties but I don't remember if it was Monogram or Renwal. Fact is that I loved this model but everyone, including my ex wife, happily divorced, thought I was stupid or worse so accordingly they bashed it and I'm so happy that it is back in production and I will order it ASAP! Wish I could find other engines as well...

This is just like the radial engines that I 3D printed and designed in tinkercad for a B-17 that has a 12 foot wingspan but mine were around 30% bigger. Most of the components were created by eye plus a very detailed blueprint.

While I've never personally flew anything with a radial, nothing, and I mean NOTHING sounds like a loping radial, especially on start-up. This looks sweet! As usual, hat tip to your build. Great results, without the 30-coat color-sanded airbrush 500-hour project times. 👍

Madman I am, how about taking 2 of these kits and making a 3350 duplex cyclone? I will need to look into that! I noticed how long the axle shafts for the stand wheels were. Bet back in the day the instructions had you mushroom those with a hot screwdriver! A hallmark of those old Monogram kits!
