I LOVE INKS! Have been housebound for 15 years, write to about 30 people, and have three journals I write in every day. I have 34 pens (inexpensive mostly like Metros, Plaisirs, Lamys, Kakunos) inked up in five small plastic stackable trays that I rotate through. I keep a small notebook to tell me which ink is in which pen. Don't need a fancy pen case because I rarely leave home, but they sure do look beautiful! :)

I keep 12 inked up. Rotating through two a day that way I can make sure everybody gets equal attention throughout the week. My only problem pen has been a bold Lamy with sheen ink in it, other than that all ink flows freely.

Nice, fun and informative video. Deciding what to travel with is a interesting problem to think about. This summer holidays, I am going to pack a 3-pen Visconti pen case which will hold a Pelikan M805 (silver, demonstrator) inked up before I leave; this one is for serious writing, in a Leuchturm 1917 notebook I never go without. The second pen will be a Pelikan M600, (this summer the White Turquoise). And the third will be a Sailor pro gear large size 21K nib, (this summer the Mocha Brown special edition). I will also take a Visconti travelling ink pot, (filled with Iroshizuku Asa Gao blue) and a Pineider travelling ink well filled with Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz brown- two of my all-time favourite inks. But for the beach, general carrying in a ruck sack, etc. I have two TWSBI Ecos (a 1.1 stub black and a medium demonstrator)... If I were travelling on business, I would take a more "office" pen, like the Pelikan M 805 Stresemann. And who knows, I might even buy a pen while on holiday!

I have about a dozen pens inked up all the time. Like Adrianne, I color code my notes at work. I have a pen for my gaming journal. I always have one with a nano black (TWSBI 580ALR). And a couple pens with interesting inks that I change out. Currently two Opus 88 pens with Lamy Crystal inks.

Opus 88 pens are hard to beat when it comes to traveling as far as the ink capacities are concerned. ....especially with the F or EF nibs. Then there are the Noodler's Ababs with the .308 cartridges as well (for traveling and ink capacities concerned).

@Adrianne I think the Pilot Kakuno is incredibly underrated. (I should admit I've never used a Plaisir though I have several Preppys) but I love the Kakuno. It has a great nib and it can fit the CON 70 converter which has a gigantic ink supply and is easy to clean and fill. Brian has videos on how to fill, but to clean you squirt water up the center shaft with a blunt syringe. I'm not sure if the ones Goulet sells is big enough, but I have some other blunt syringes that fit around the center tube of the CON 70. Then just squirt water up it until the water is clear. I carry about 18 pens between work and home in multiple Nock cases. Though admittedly I mostly only use 12 really regularly.

I keep my non-inked in the Monteverde 36 case, my currently inked is limited to what can be stored in the Giologio Oxblood 24 case. Day-to day, I travel with either my Visconti or Nock Lookout 3 pen case, and a Retro 51 Rollerball in a sleeve. I'll pick my 3 each day or for the week from the "currently inked" case depending on activity, theme, and/or outfit. For a pen meetup, I'll bring my 24 pen case instead. I have a Passport size TN notebook for personal notes and planning, and the standard size for work BuJo. For outdoor/camping then criteria includes durability and non-limited editions (Karas, Procyon, Safari, etc.) . For conferences/business, then a Vanishing Point, Visconti, and TWSBI are common.

I have only two pens that I use, I use them almost daily and they are both inked up. I have a Parker Duofold Centenial BB gold tip edition that rarely ever leaves my desk and stays at home that I have been using more and more over the past couple years. Because that pen is extra fancy and I don't want to risk losing it, I also got a Lamy Logo fine tip steel nib that I have been using as my daily driver which I take to work with me everyday. Love that one since it clips to my shirt although the stainless steel nib doesn't really compare to a gold double wide.

i keep 6 pens inked up, i'm a civil engineering student (lots of notes and multi page math problems). 2 in black 2 in blue 1 orange for noting screw ups and a green for noting fixes. i have been known to use all of them on napkin style tech drawings to identify different aspects clearly, just before i go build the thing of doodles. the most resent doodle is a possible solution to Eye dropper filled pens tendency to burp when they get low. hoping to print a prototype and test soon. What would be a good (common and cheap) nib/ size?

I have 2 Montblanc 149's at home (one with black and the other a blue black ink) that I use for Chinese practice (to encourage me to practice my characters), I have a Pilot VP extra fine on my desk at work. I carry two cases in my backpack to work every day: a Visconti Dream Touch 3 pen case that is the Major League and carries my current favs, and a 12 pen case that is the minor league, but only 6 of them can be inked at a given time, so if a pen falls out of favor, they get sent down to the minors and someone gets the call to come up to the Big Show. (I call it getting sent down to Tidewater on account of the minor league baseball team there, was a farm team for the Mets at some point, and I knew I guy who was sent there back in the 80's, so it stuck). So...its 3 in heavy rotation, 6 inked and in reserve and 6 not inked; that is what I carry. With the ones in a stationary location, the is 12 pens inked at a given time. Though the ones that travel can change from time to time, the ones at work and home are pretty much set. :)

The Over/UnderThinker ...Really interesting to hear. Only goes to show the passion and personal quirks regarding our pens and the way we use them that we fountain pen fanatics all over the world share. On another note, I have far more pens than I do inks. And I have decided not to buy any more pens for at least another year or more. I’m starting to dislike the idea of having splendid pens lying around unused. I’d like to use all my 49 pens..but I can’t say I have succeeded doing that recently. I don’t want to part with any of them either. So, I’ll stop buying and start using all of the ones I already have. My every day carry list of pens is a sizeable lot. Not a day of the year goes by in which I have not used at least one of my pens.

@@sajjadhusain4146 I find my tastes change over time and even though some pens don't get used regularly, in a few years they might be in heavy rotation. I sometimes think "didn't I have a ......" and then I find it and it moves to the top of the list, so don't despair. Live a healthy life and hopefully you will be around long enough to give each pen a good usage! :) but I certainly know how you feel. I buy pens for a year or two, don't buy any for a year or two, buy for a few months when I see something new, don't even look for a few months; I am pretty streaky and I need time to "digest" my acquisitions, so I put it on pause until I have gotten a chance to use what I have already bought. There are so many new and lovely pens coming out each year that if you look, you will want to buy! I bet that is their secret plan! ;)

The Over/UnderThinker ...Ha, I have spent a mini fortune on my fountain pens and inks. If this is an addiction and a vice, I console myself with the thought that there are myriad more and far worse vices than loving, buying and using a ton of splendid fountain pens. You give me hope with your advice to not fret too much over not using many of my pens. I won’t. It’s just that I was never a hoarder or a ‘collector’ - but a dedicated and avid user who loves to write with all my pens. I’m on the verge of ordering one final pen - the Aurora Duo Cart - from Gouletpens this week as soon as I’m alerted of its availability. Another ‘hobby’ which I’m really fond of is buying and using various DE (double edge) safety razors for my wet shaving. But let me not even start on that. 😀 Cheers always!

My inked pens keep expanding, so I may have to rein it in. I try to travel with about six inked pens: five are in my 3-Pen Nock holder (Sinclair?) and the other one in my shirt pocket. I also carry a cheap Bic Clic Stic ballpoint and a Uni Kuru Toga .07 pencil (but we don’t talk about those). My most reliable paper supply is a top-spiral Clairefontaine 21x14 notebook. Typically, I do not carry an ink supply until it is a few short, international cartridges. My next purchase will be a Hawaiian shirt like Drew’s!

I LOVE how Goulet folk love their pens! Nothing more assuring than to be sold pens (& inks,) by folk as geeky & knowledgeable as myself. I usually have 7 pens inked in different colors. 4 Pelikan 400's with matching inks. 2 Platinum 3776's with variable inks, and 1 Sailor 1911 strictly for black ink and bad (absorbent) paper & drawing. My current formula for travel is three large-capacity (piston or vac filler) pens: two fines and a fine-medium, one inked with black and the others with different shades of blue. On a recently 3-week trip to Asia I took a Pilot 823, a Pilot Custom Heritage 92 and a Sailor Realo in a Nock Lookout case. The CH 92 returned home empty, and the other two with small amounts of ink.

I have ten pens inked up that I carry with me daily. I probably use at least 6 different pens on any given day. At work, I'll select three pens and have them out for general note-taking and record-keeping activities. At home, I switch and use three different pens for journaling and doodling and practicing calligraphy. Not all my pens are "writers" - I carry a Pilot Parallel 2.4 mm stub. It's too fat for regular writing, but inked up with something shimmery, it lays down great lines. I always have paper on hand - at work it's Rhodia pads, while at home it's Goulet Notebook refills with that lovely Tomoe River paper. I also have a Rhodia goalbook that goes with me everywhere, and a Leuchtturm 1917 5 year Memory book.

While travelling, I will take my Lamy Safari and All-Star. For ink, it's cartridges only. Our trips can be busy and hectic, seeing many places in a short amount of time. Also, we mostly walk when exploring new cities (and some that we've visited before) and I'm carrying my camera (or 2) and a couple of extra lenses so I don't have the space for a lot of pens.

I have between 10-15 inked up and use the Giologieo ox blood 24 for these pens and I have a piece of paper in the case with the pen and ink details. This enables me to check the ink flow and keep a record for when I clean the pens. I always have at least one pen, usually a shark, inked with Noodler’s no feather so I can write on the cheap paper if there is nothing else. All my other pens are kept in Monteverde 36 pen slot but might have to find some other system as I have three of them and will need another soon..

So I have ten pens currently inked up and in active use. I've become a fan of color coding my work things over the past few years, so when I got into FPs, I needed to keep that up. Five TWSBI Ecos (Black, Red, Blue, Green, Orange) with matching inks, as well as a Lamy Al-Star purple with matching ink. The other four are not matched, charcoal Safari with a different purple (fairly permanent match here, unless I end up getting a purple pen that matches the ink color), and three random matches, Metropolitan with grey, broad Vista with Kon-Peki, and some Jinhao pen with Diamine Sunset. On top of those, I also have four pens inked at home that I don't actively use much... A turquoise Al-Star with matching ink (for a story I'm writing for every now and then), a couple pens with cartridges popped in so... no taking those out, and a TWSBI GO Stub with purple at the moment, but really whatever I feel like writing in a stub with. Last time I traveled, I took the same ten pens that I take to work. Granted, I think I only actually used one or two, because I don't color code as much in my personal life (or journal nearly as much), but I like to have the option if I feel like it. Got a plane trip coming up in August, and I'm thinking of just inking up those ten again to the max to minimize air and then just rolling with that. Maybe bring a couple of sample vials to refill the Lamys because those converters run out of ink a lot faster than the TWSBIs.

The others I'll use different inks in. At the front of each new journal I'll swatch out the pens and label the colors. Between new notebooks I'll do a new swatch page and add a flag.

I'm trying to minimize the number of pens I keep inked up but on average, I keep 3-5 pens inked up at a time.

I'm still new to fountain pens so finding my feet so not set on a specific pen. I have 12 pens of which 8 are inked... 4 Lamys with different ink and different nibs, a Twsbi Vac 700R, Pen BBS 309, Opus 88 Clear demo and Leonardo Momento Zero... all different inks.

I, like Drew, try to stick to having only three pens inked up at a time. I feel like that way I rotate through my collection more quickly and I find it more manageable to carry them with me. Sometimes I'll go over three if I want to ink a particular nib for a certain task (I usually write with mediums and broads, but will ink a pen with a fine nib if I know I have a lot of grading of student work to do) and I'm not quite as strict as Drew about having to clean out a pen to ink up another. I do try to get back to three as quickly as I can, though, when I'm over. For carbon copy forms and crappy paper, I carry a Pilot Metropolitan rollerball as a backup and I don't count that in my three. All that goes in a Nock Sinclair.

I use the Plunger-syringe Drew demonstrated to refill cartridges. Advice: Fill the cartridge SLOWLY, and always have a bright light in the background. I currently have 38 inked pens scattered around the house. I rotate through them by choosing one at random when I need to write something. I don't carry ink with me, but I always travel with a cartridge pen; I check to see that it is full before I leave. My notebook is a Day-Timer. The paper is not an ink-friendly type, so I always have a fine-nibbed pen with me, as well as a fine-tipped Pilot G-2 05 ball-point pen. These Pilots use gel ink & write very well. I don't use pen cases/kimonos. If one of my pens gets scratched or dinged, no big deal; I use them to WRITE with, not to display. I have a mix of both high-dollar pens and cheap ones. My rule is, they have to write well.

I never have any fewer than 6 pens inked up at the same time (and I use all of them). However, sometimes things go out of control and I find myself with 20 inky nibs, especially if I grab thinner pens and they all fit in my case xD

I do my best to only have 3 to 5 inked up at once. If its 3 they all get dry at the same time and cleaning is quick and easy. Right now I have 6. A very rare thing.

I don't have a large collection and I am relatively new to the hobby. I've fountain pens for almost ten years, but did not start collecting until the past few months. Went to my first show a this year. I did not want to get into the bad habit of having all of my pens inked with nothing to do with them. I do a LOT of writing, but I only have three notebooks that have fountain pen friendly paper. Some of the colors are no good for writing excerpts like Apache Sunset. So I have only four pens inked and I'm like Drew. If I decide to ink a new pen, I clean and store an inked one. 1. Lachieva EF Monteverde Emirite 2. Pilot Metropolitan F Noodler's Lexington Gray 3. Jinhao Dragon M Pilot Iroshizuku Fuyu-gaki 4. TWSBI Eco Transparent Orange 1.1 mm stub Pilot Iroshizuku Syo-Ro
