Moral of the story: Don't treat a brutal murderer like a hatchling with a broken wing. Some people are not to be trifled with or saved.

I am a retired probation/parole officer. One thing I have learned is that there is no such thing as rehabilitation of a repeat offender by any type of counseling or a "good woman's love," The only times I have seen repeat offenders going straight is because, and this is a direct quote, "I got sick of being locked up on Christmas, Thanksgiving, and my birthday."

Tragic. Good life strategies: 1) Learn to recognize toxicity and psychopathy so you can run away from it like your hair is on fire. 2) Don't start a romance with a convicted killer. 3) Understand that not everyone can be fixed.

This story will be on repeat until the end of humanity. It's frustratingly sad and pathetic.

I have been that type of woman. Thinking everyone can be “saved”. Shown a better life. You can make a difference in a child’s life, you cannot change a dangerous full grown man. You need to just avoid them.

I remember seeing an Oprah show with a woman with facial burns. She met a guy who was in jail for killing his wife. She thought that, as a Christian, she should give everyone a second chance and that she would give it to him. I don't remember what he poured on her, but she was sitting on the floor with her son when the man poured something on her that resulted in burns. She was able to shield her child. As a Christian myself, I cannot bring myself to believe that I'm the one who has to give criminals their second chance at the risk of my life, finances, or health. Some people cannot be saved - at least not by me.

1. Why would you live with a murderer? 2. Why would you believe a person with a history of violence would be changed? 3. Why would you loan an unemployed career criminal any money expecting to be paid back?

The typical “I can fix him…my love will fix him” mentality that so many people seem to have. We all need to stop feeling sorry for violent people…and stop making excuses for them. We can’t “fix” them or rehabilitate them.

It's crazy that he was only given a 10 year sentence, not a full length term or DP afterwards. Once somebody murders like this, I don't there's any chance of rehab.

That poor woman. She made a living because people were Interested in reading her perspective. She was insightful enough to have that career. It’s too bad that she couldn’t use any intelligence or objectivity when it came to protecting herself from this monster

Most murderers are sociopaths or psychopaths...keep far far away from ALL sociopaths and psychopaths.

I think people who fall in love with criminals tend to be the “pick me” type. Their ego gets boosted by the idea that they are so special, clever or lovable that THEY can fix the criminal when no one else can.

I know a guy right now, been in and out of prison since he was 16 now 32. He's on parol fo second degree murder. He did ten years. When he got out of prison he had a little over 20 grand cash. Practically brand new vehicle given to him. All the the stuff a person would need. He got involved with this church shortly after being imprisoned. They supported him the whole way through. When he got out completely took care of him, got him a job making $27 an hour... Fast forward year-and-a-half into his parole.... He's currently sitting in jail with about 29 aggravated charges... For Robbie 89 year old women that he went to church with him.. no he isn't on drugs or alcohol... He's just one of them pl. No matter how much you help them.. you're nothing more than a stepping stepping stone to use

My ex wife was in a long range relationship with a convicted killer in Vegas. I found filthy letters from him. It only got worse when I found out she was sending him money, our money.

My sister did something like this. She found her high-school boyfriend 20 years later on line. He was in jail on drug and fraud charges. She married him while he was in jail. He got out and took a whole bunch of money out in her name and took off. 🤦‍♀️

Thank you Dr. Grande for clarifying that loving someone and romance will not turn a psychopath into a virtuous person. My sister is on her 3 rd marriage, yet again to another addict. She even admitted this guy is her "project". Our father was a narcissist and even though she was his favorite child, he neglected and verbally abused her like he did the rest of us.

Thank you for telling us about these crimes. I married a man when I was very young and I didn't know he had been a youth offender and had done time in Lethbridge Canada. His mother let me know about it after we were married. He told me a few stories about people who had died, friends of his. Very early in that marraige he seriously beat me up. Worse than any of that was when our daughter was 9 years old I caught him naked in bed with her. That was the day I told him to leave. Now it has been almost 40 years since that day. Today I am writing a letter to warn the mother of my great grandaughter who was born a few months ago. I hope she will take the information I send to her seriously. Iwarned her of everything and told her never to leave her little daughter alone with him. I'm ashamed of how stupid I was all those years. I admit he was an advanced human who is incredibly good at manipulating others, lying, grooming and forcing them into keeping secrets in order for him to deceive. Still I must have the courage to write to her and try to stop these crimes from continuing in the family through another generation.I remarried many years after my children grew up. I have a good husband now. I've moved away from Canada. I wish I had been able to bring that bad man to justice but it was not possible. My daughters were loyal to their incestuous father. I understand. I have learned that is because it is difficult for children to understand when their abuser is their own Dad. Thanks Dr. Grande for making people more and more aware of how crime works to destroy people and their families. Hopefully with information and knowledge like you provide we will all be able to protect ourselves and others from crime.

The saying “What the heart wants, the heart wants” comes to mind. Once Louise let herself get involved with him, her heart (emotions) took over. It’s difficult to be objective when it’s your heart that’s the one entangled with the wrong person. Guarding one’s heart sometimes is considered to be putting up barriers so you don’t get involved. I’d rather be considered paranoid than deceased.

Reforming someone who writes bad checks and steal from other people....yeah, that can be done. Reforming someone who murdered 1, and most likely 3 women, at the time Louise took him into her home? No, I don't think a serial killer like that will be reformed, and in the rare case that they are, then such a killer would understand why it would be appropriate to keep them in prison for the rest of their life.

Media often glorifies this dynamic and it pops up often in crime shows and movies like Silence of the Lambs. If you love someone but they are abusing you, YOU MUST LEAVE. You cannot ever make anyone else change. If they want to change and are motivated and able to change, then you can help them. But when they become violent, cut all contact forever.

This is not the first and only incident of a female professional type associated with the criminal business finding herself killed by the guy she wanted to help. I don't understand why women do crazy stuff like this. I would never assoicate with them and I am a man.

Not sure why people believe they’ll be the magic exception, not everyone can or wants to be rehabilitated. She deserved better.

This piece of work got only 10 years for strangling someone. It seems Canada's justice system is as screwy as England's. Let violent criminals out of prison and disarm the citizenry.

Sometimes people make pets out of wild animals. They can dress them up or train them to act in certain ways, But the internal nature of the creature is still the same. The pet seems fine until something sets them off.

For a lot of people there seems to be this attraction For being a redeemer of another person in a romantic relationship. Guys often do you think they’re gonna make a good girl out of a gogo dancer and women gravitate towards troubled men.

Having worked in the state prison for 29 years--5 in a position where I had to scan incoming mail--I could write a book about prison romances. Mysteriously there was a lot of love letters to murderers from Europe and Australia. One inmate that received such letters killed a man to see what it felt like, then murdered another in the county jail. If these women "with limited choices in men" would put out the same effort on the streets as they do with writing inmates in prison--they could easily find romance where it would benefit them.

Perfect example of truth being stranger than fiction. I am sure there are people who insist he was wrongly convicted, framed by a corrupt system.

I feel very sad for Louise. She tried to see the good in someone who didn't deserve it, and I know how that feels from my younger years when I was more naïve. Marie is a boss for manipulating him back into prison where he belongs.

Oh No I haven't even watched the video yet. This was the strangest. saddest case. My dating advice would be, its probably best not to fall romantically for a convicted killer. Even a convicted killer who is 'innocent". Not worth the risk of ending up the same way. And Wow The PI who helped convict this guy should get an award for bravery.

I think it's worth putting effort into rehabilitating people who have violent/antisocial/destructive thoughts and urges. But once actually acted upon, and a line is crossed, there is no turning back. There is ALWAYS going to be the possibility they could do it again. Dealing with them is playing Russian roulette.

There must be some psychological divide between women who love bad boys and those who run a mile from them. Older now, but I wouldn’t ever have considered contacting a prisoner convicted of any crime, let alone letting a murderer move in and lending him money. So awful what happened to that poor, naive woman.

Some women definitely has a 'saviour complex': others are warning them not to get involved, the person is toxic, dangerous, whatever, but the woman disregards them all. She thinks that she can 'save' someone, even when all previous attempts have failed. It can happen & things work-out, but there are some tragic results.

Speaking from experience... in 2000 I got entangled with a guy whose mother I knew (nice enough lady, apart from the bit where she didn't warn me about her son). He'd been in prison and I thought it was for selling weed. Think Trainspotting, Edinburgh, where I lived at that time: I knew someone who fitted every character in the book/movie, so that didn't seem that bad to me. When the 'honeymoon' period was over he proceeded to terrorize me for the thankfully short duration of a few months before I managed to escape him, mostly physically unscathed, albeit one time he nearly killed me by strangulation. Turned out it was violent assault of an ex, biting her about the face and body. I was nearly physically sick when I discovered what he'd actually done. Oh I thought I was so smart and knew how to play the game. Did I chuff, and I learned the hard way. The mental scars are still healing over 20 years later. I'm not saying everyone who has been in prison is irredeemable, but I'd never entertain that again. There was a happy ending (for me, fuck him and who cares) though: through years of analysis of my own naive ways I got my shit together and finally got with the right guy. If anyone else has been through this kind of thing, know that life can be good.

How does one blatantly strangle a sex worker and end up merely indicted for manslaughter? Did he claim it was an accident during "rough sex" and they didn't have the evidence to prove otherwise? That's the only feasible route I can think of that would allow him to avoid the murder conviction he should've been dealt. Had this been a wife/girlfriend, I highly doubt this would have played out this way. Unfortunately, our justice system doesn't place any value on the lives of sex workers and/or drug addicts which opens up the path for nonsense like this. The wackjob should've been locked up for life a long time ago... and these other lives would have been spared.

Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. It’s hard enough to change ourselves; it is naive and somewhat arrogant to think we can change others.

This is a particularly striking example of delusional thinking on the part of the victim, but how many times do any of us give someone "the benefit of the doubt" when deep down inside we know we're taking a serious risk. Would this be considered "magical thinking" on the victim's part? I'm really glad that the second woman didn't get murdered by Morgan when she assisted the police...one brave lady there!

Should loved ones use reverse psychology when a person is in a situation like this? I’m definitely guilty of getting defensive and saying, “you just don’t know him!” …. and then eating my hat later. I have eaten so many hats.

It occurs to me as if that man would have received a much higher sentence in the first place if the first woman he killed wasn't a sex worker but a well respected member of society. Not only are sex workers poorly protected and oftentimes not taken seriously when reporting a crime they were the victim of, but also being harmed at that job, like assaulted, beaten, robbed, or killed, seems to be considered occupational hazard one should be aware of when "choosing" this line of work ("choosing" because many people working as sex workers only do so because they are under the impression of not actually having another choice). In this respect committing a crime against a sex worker is more likely to be viewed as accidental, or at least not as serious as committing the same crime against someone working in a less dangerous occupation, like hunting grizzly bears, or defusing bombs.

Dear Dr Grande, as they say a leopard does not change its spots. It's sad that she did not take his criminal history seriously. He was likely charming and engaging when on the make. But that Louise did not run when he first became violent cost her her life. An excellent analysis teaching us again to be extra careful regarding individuals with a history of violent behavior. I remember the David Millgard case. It was a horrible injustice. He was put away for over 20 years but was innocent and quite a lot of people knew it.

In 1996 a man brutally murdered both his parents in a Chicago suburb. There were too many puncture wounds on his mom to be counted. He was on parole after serving 19 years for a murder which the victim’s friend heard over the phone as he committed it. I truly believe these people are mentally disturbed and unredeemable.

I remember this story. Happened here in Ottawa. David Milgard was a miscarriage of justice in Canada. I encourage others who don't know this story to look it up. Louise went missing, Brett was on the media indicating he knew nothing about it. He was guilty of her murder. She was found in the hills in Gatineau Quebec, just across from Ottawa. I recalled thinking why on earth would this educated woman be involved with a murderer? Interesting you did this home town story. Great summary of what actually happened, Dr. Grande.

The sentences murderers get in Canada are pathetically weak. If you want to befriend a convicted murderer, you are rolling the dice,... loaded dice. Thankfully, brave Marie made a fool of the creep-o killer.

The “I can fix him” trait will always lead to misery and oftentimes fatality. You cannot fix or rehabilitate a violent man by showering him with love and affection. So many women need to understand this. Stay away from these psychos.

Tragic, though it may be, I find it difficult to feel sorry for her. We're all human and make mistakes in life, but moving in with a known killer is a special category of bonehead ideas. At some point you just have to throw your hands up and say ''Well what did she expect to happen ?''.

I saw this story about a decade ago. It put an end to a lot of my silly ideas about new age crap. I had a tumultuous childhood and was greatly given to magical thinking but thanks to stories like this I woke up.

Thank you, good doctor, for clarifying (I am paraphrasing) how one shouldn't try to heal those incarcerated due to severe anti-social behavior, leave it to the professionals. If I may add: don't be a martyr! We all love BUT if their history proves they are damaged encourage therapy and then RUN.
