@@lostlakepictures7378 still, she was clearly uncomfortable about it and tried repeatedly to say they don’t intervene in each other’s work in a significant manner. She literally says at the beginning they are separate entities. This guys is just infamously bad at reading the room, he always seems to be a stickler for his own series of questions and hardly ever lets the conversation between some of the best in their field to flow freely.

People criticising Taika about putting Hitler in this film are missing some massive points. First, the whole movie is about a little boy who has been brain-washed by Nazi germany into thinking that Hitler is a good guy, and without a dad he allows that to infiltrate his thinking. In an age where young men are being radicalized left and right from a variety of extreme ideologies precisely because of this, we should be eager to explore this problem. In addition, Taika is himself a visible minority in his home nation of New Zealand, his people a victim of cultural imperialism, systematic racism, etc, so he is hardly making light of bigotry. And futhermore, there is a long history of putting Hitler in a farcical role in order to mock his over the top, riduculous character.

Agreed. Hitler and Nazis are comedy gold ("Are we the baddies?" from Peepshow). But wow is it tough to find a way to get the power brokers to allow that comedy to reach audiences through their gates. And it's vital to shut that fascist thinking down hard via mockery, because society will always have people attempting to rally around ideologues who espouse fascism as a solution to any number of national problems.

The moderator didn't ask Bo in the 2019 roundtable about Lorene's contribution to his work. Yet, he asked Lorene about how Bo helps her. It's not a big deal, but it's telling how men see women in this realm - really.

completely agree with you there. see how we have to add things like "it's not a big deal though" to these types of observations? it's frustrating to keep towing this line. because if she was feeling sassy and decided to quip about it instead of just carrying on normally, it would have played terribly. she's an accomplished writer in her own right, not a groupie. I think it was an incredibly thoughtless question, but ultimately just spoke to the mod's incompetence. she handled it pretty gracefully.

I get the strong impression that these screenwriters either never saw JoJo Rabbit or just didn't get that Hitler is merely an imaginary friend ala Harvey the Rabbit, who happens to look like Hitler because the boy's cultural hero is Hitler. It's not that the child knows Hitler, understands Hitler, or would like Hitler if he met him. He's a construct, not Hitler. OBVIOUSLY

Obviously more eyes more money but they have their own thriving market so it's understandable they may not feel the need to get on the Hollywood reporter if their work isn't pushing to an American audience.

Galloway did not ask Burnham how Scafaria helped him write Eighth Grade. Journalists have a history of insinuating artists' male partners are at least partly responsible for their work.

It was obvious to me that Scafaria was not fond of these series of questions. It wasn’t like he asked one question; he kept pushing and each question was blatantly clear he was putting Scafaria in a position that put more weight on Bo than her (does Bo read your script? has he given you notes? What were they? Vs do you two collaborate? Do you find him to be helpful in this process? Do you two have a working dynamic to your relationship? Do you critique his work? Have you given him notes?)

I'm very biased having seen all of Taika's films, long and short. Plus I'm a New Zealander, a Maori, and I recall a personal interaction with Taika in Wellington decades ago... The messages/values he wished to convey could never have resonated so deeply, without the safety-net of humour carrying them in a most palatable and accessible way.

I am all of these things too (but only part Maori) and find his recent work to be a little watered down. His films are very sweet, his framing is very centered and the colors are punchy and rich - his humor can be hit or miss, but mostly it hits. He works better when he isn't writing a story that is out of his depth. Jojo rabbit was out of his depth. Sorry, but it's honestly true. The writers in this interview all seem to have small problems with the way he wrote that film. When this film first released, it had a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. Taika has no interest in putting in research or creating themes. He just wants to make fun movies that warm your heart and make your eyes water. He's great at that. But that's it.

Taika Waititi is by far the least pretentious of this whole group but has the most cause to actually be pretentious. I find it comforting that the guy who's made a movie for the smallest budge ( $1.35 million) in the lot, while also having a Billion dollar movie under his belt is the most humble of them all.

Taika Waititi and Anthony McCarten represent two ends of the spectrum when it comes to the New Zealand narrative. Waititi calls out NZ for being 'racist AF', McCarthen feels he has to 'fight' for the freedom to write a script for a African American female character. Waititi is intolerant of systemic/objective/passive discrimination and McCarthen is positively bloated with entitlement. If you want to know what it's like to be from in NZ, these two men embody the dichotomy that IS New Zealand culture. I think because New Zealanders have to grapple with these two opposing mind-sets every single day it makes us wildly complex, powerfully discerning people. The endless grappling, while exhausting, creates compelling writers indeed.

I’m not even 5 minutes in and I can already tell that Taika is on edge whenever someone mentions Superhero or Marvel... even tho there is another Marvel director in that discussion which is Destin (Just Mercy guy) who will be the director of Shang Chi.

Yep. Waititi completely misrepresented Scorsese's argument too. There was a similar moment in the Actresses' roundtable when Johansson was asked about Marvel vs. the independent films she's been nominated for and she was clearly uncomfortable with the question.

Well he can't bite the hands that feeds him. Nolan was the only person who I felt did not end up just making another comic movie to please DC. I also expected Ryan Coogler to elevate black panther story from it's source. But that movie was no different from what Marvel would promote.

As good as BH was, it’s popularity is almost a disservice to itself. It’s not as good a dramatic movie as it’s numbers would indicate and I think the musical performances created a mass appeal effect that impacted the take away from the film. It is almost as though it had that big action movie euphoria in a dramatic film. Movies that can do that do not need to resonate AS deeply emotionally or with the story because people enjoy the films for other reasons as well as those basics of storytelling.

A year late but Lorene Scafaria also directed all three of films; Hustlers, The Meddler, and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Despite her previous credits, she still had to fight to direct Hustlers! The industry is so disappointing and she seems utterly brilliant.

Short Term 12, mentioned at around 16:30, is one of the finest films to come out of the US certainly in the past decade. I can't recommend it enough.

I wholeheartedly agree. After watching it I wrote my first feature length script. It ushered me into my writing career and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve probably seen it over 20 times now.

Really like Taika Waititi's description of his writing style as that's what how I am trying to write my first screenplay. Fascinating insight into the world of screenwriting. There is a market for original content in the film industry, not everything has to be based on real life, nor does it have to be about CGI and colours and explosions. It's an exciting time to be a writer.

He's stating that writers shouldn't be forced to write solely about their own demographic/experiences. If we want a world of understanding, it might help to grant people the right - which we already have and should celebrate - to explore perspectives outside their own. However, as far as Bohemian Rhapsody the film goes, I must agree. It was quite a wash.

Listen closely to how he said “I was involved with Bohemian Rhapsody.” Involved with. There are numerous stories out there about the script being practically written by the studio heads and according to the demands of the living Queen members. McCarten could divulge everything that transpired behind the scenes in a heartbeat, if he had the permission to do that.

He's arguing that a writer's background shouldn't prevent them creating characters from other cultures, which is a perfectly reasonable point. As for Bohemian Rhapsody, much of the film was written in a sanitised way to meet the demands of the surviving band members who had a large amount of creative control, as did the studio.

The only thing about this that irritates me is that I'm seeing it 2 years later. Taika Waititi will go down as the Mel Brooks/Spielberg of our era and the fact that he is a person of color changes the narrative for entertainment and I'm all for it

@Iris Miller Some marvel fans absolutely hated Thor: Love and Thunder, it got a lot of bad reviews saying it's over the top silly with disjointed plotlines. Haven't seen it yet personally so withholding judgement, but even if it's godawful it won't take away from my love of Jojo Rabbit and OFMD

If youtube is going to be about corporate media now, it should at least be media like this. Enough with the 57 year old Late Show format crap. That's a TV shaped media in an Internet shaped hole. This is better than anything on TV. These are consistently enlightening, charming, interesting, and surprising.

I think the idea that superhero movies are somehow a new concept is insane. Like Taika said, it's just new mythology, but because they come from comic books, another relatively new concept, and a very new artistic medium compared to other mediums, some people just see it as cheaper in some way for that reason. But really, it's just the new action movie. In the 40s through the early 80s, it was the adventure flick. In the late 80s to early 2010s, it was the cheesy but sometimes gritty, gun-porn, action thriller where one brooding guy with a dark past kills rooms and rooms of henchmen before facing off with the ultimate threat- the equally generic bad guy. Concluding with the drive off into the sunset with the most generic character archetype of all time, the damsel in distress love interest. But really, it's jus the new action movie. With some exceptions. Some are good, most are just explosive eye-candy. Idk why people like Scorsese seem to think it's new. Certain genres just capture the mainstream for about a decade. The 60s had westerns, the 80s had slashers, now the 2010s have comic book movies. There's nothing wrong with that. The mainstream blockbusters will always get flack

@@armanimartinez8105 There are 23 MCU movies. I don't think there is 23 of anything that's good. Line up any 23 people and some of them will be shitty. Some MCU movies are good (Iron Man, 2008) and some just suck (Thor II), some solid (Winter Soldier) while the rest were acceptable. But Scorcese didn't care about that nuance. Because in truth, he hated that they were fantasy fare. He would have preferred boring movies set in the real world than exciting fantasy ones. Like it is in television. There are about a thousand cop dramas an equal number of medical dramas, most of which suck. But no one says anything because they are set in the real world. And that's why the streaming services are dominating entertainment now. Because they don't subscribe to that mentality. They don't believe that the heightened reality of medical dramas and cop dramas is somehow more mature than fantasy. They accept that fiction is fiction and that is that and judge stories based on their own individual quality.

I'm pretty sure that Taika think otherwise. Paul Thomas Anderson, Yórgos Lánthimos, Richard Linklater, Spike Jonze, Bong Joon Ho are masters and there filmography is much bigger than Taika's (except Bong Joon Ho). Maybe someday

On the one hand, fiction needs freedom. On the other hand, writing a fictional Hitler from the pov of a 10 year old is dangerous. I am guessing these salty writers didn't see Jojo Rabbit in its entirety. It was satire done perfectly. This is what I dislike about the 'woke intelligentsia'. They'd rather not tell stories instead of trying something new.

Considering Taika is very much a part of the 'woke intelligentsia' (even if he isn't insufferably pretentious about it) I don't think that's where the problem lies. His fellow kiwi who wanted to 'hold his feet to the fire' comes from a very different background. When you've lived a fairly privileged life it's hard to have an instinct for what's right and what isn't, so you try to poutily 'overcorrect' while completely missing the point. It's like the sort of people who saw the #metoo movement and said 'Well maybe we shouldn't hire women at all.'

Taika lets mythology remind us that we come from somewhere and evolve. I'm not sure about the other writers, but it seems mythology is such a powerful concept that it can withstand actors ad libs.

Alexander Chee comes to mind in this conversation. He said before exploring characters outside of your life experience, ask yourself, as a writer: Why do you want to write from this character’s point of view? Do you read writers from this community currently? Why do you want to tell this story? In the context of Hollywood and writers' rooms, it would also make sense to consult (if it's a singular project like most films) or work with writers of different backgrounds, whether or not the story is about an African American lawyer or four sisters from Massachusetts during the civil war era. It's not just about conducting "research", different perspectives add to the depth and empathy of a story, period.

Interesting how Anthony McCarten said “I was involved with Bohemian Rhapsody.” Involved with. There are numerous stories out there about the script being practically written by the studio heads and according to the demands of the living Queen members. McCarten could divulge everything that transpired behind the scenes in a heartbeat, if he had the permission to do that.
