This week I've been trying to find the balance between plotting and pantsing. I enjoy both, and I've found a nice happy medium. Whether you're a plotter or a pantser, I hope you'll find this useful.

Very good point about making characters not just give information. Plenty of times we lie, hide, avoid, but that's not always happening in books because the author wanted the reader to know something. Knowing your characters and what their choices are helps tremendously in having a conversation unfold naturally - organically as you put it. I think it's fun when I'm reading a story and I spot an inconstancy between what two characters said and know I know one is lying, but figuring out which one is where the real fun is.

It's a fine balance isn't it? Sometimes there's an important piece of information that we need to get across to the reader, but if the character states the information in an on-the-nose way, it can feel really forced. Having characters who lie and avoid can be a really fun way to achieve it.

I do pretty well with dialogue but I do find it easier to pants it and then later think about whether it needs to be cut down etc.

I think that's a good way of tackling it! Pants first, edit later.

I loosely plan my stories. I only have one that I haven't planned.

That sounds similar to me. A plan, but a loose one.

I was thinking about the same thing earlier while I was writing. I asked myself what events or conversations have to happen to tell the story. I came to the conclusion that I can summarise what needs to happen, and then write the scene and plan along the way. It's a realisation i came to recently.

Yes! I love this. If I plan out the whole scene in detail in advance, I just get so bored of writing the scene. It's nice to have a roadmap, but still get to explore.
