I think this is a great tip. There are a lot of chapters in a first draft I wrote recently that I need to go over, and it's much easier to do when you can look at a scene you're really proud of and then compare the two.

Thanks Eve :) Absolutely - it's so useful to have that kind of "comparison" scene you can always go back to. We've already done the hard work of proving to ourselves that we can do it. Now we just have to reach that level for every scene!

This is really good advice, I try to look back at scenes I'm proud of, and occasionally I will find whole chapters etc that I'm proud of!

Thanks Joey - I'm glad you look back on scenes and chapters you're proud of. It's helpful, isn't it? Sometimes I'm about to read an old scene and I think to myself, "this won't be as good as I used to think it was", and often I'm pleasantly surprised. Always fills me with motivation to keep trying my hardest.

Yo great advice bro! This reminds me of David Goggin's cookie jar analogy, basically where you look back to your past success and use them to motivate you in the present! This can be so powerful man! Keep posting:D

Thanks :) Oh nice - I haven't checked out David Goggins before, but I definitely will now. I think mindset is so important in writing, and very often it's just as important as the craft itself!

Yeah man definately! I think its especially powerful simply to get into a habit of it. I think Terry Pratchett wrote 400 words a day for 3 years when he was just starting out, just to get into the habit of it.

I think I need to practice this. I know some of the stuff I've written is really crappy because I've not got the motivation to write it, or I'm just trying to get the thoughts down even if they end up being a convoluted mess.

Hopefully you'll find it useful! I'm definitely not writing to my best ability at the moment, but that's okay because I can always go back, read my best stuff, and remember what I should be aiming for. Let me know how you get on :)
