Writing Desk with Only Hand Tools: Part 4, Drawers and Final Reveal

In this video, I fit the drawers, which involved dovetailing and a LOT of fiddling that I don't show. Seriously, it's just a lot of testing, planing away a little, and testing again.
Then, I glue up, bevel, and smooth plane the top, leaving it ready for paint.
Lastly, I put on some eggshell finish paint of a dark navy blue that matches the small, one-board bookshelf I built previously.

I am making a simple writing desk for my son's birthday. He doesn't really need one, but I promised my daughter I'd make her a vanity table/desk for her birthday, so that meant my son would have to have one, too. (FYI, the project was completed a little while ago, so it's already on my Instagram, see below)
As usual, this is a 100% hand tools project, not even a battery powered drill.
This will be a series, but not an extensive one. In this first part, I rough cut the main case components: the 4 legs and 3 main rails.
If there is interest, I'll make some sketchup plans, but in reality, it's not very necessary.
If you enjoyed, please consider subscribing, liking, commenting, etc. And please check out my other social profiles.

Unlike the machine jockeys out there, I love to see a fellow wood worker actually WORK WOOD with hand tools.

Unfortunately I missed the other parts in this series due to being busy (I'll look over them at a later time), but I'm happy that I caught the end. It's a beautiful desk Andrew 😊 Definitely something to be really proud of my friend 😊 ॐ

nice work. I recently completed a flip-top spinet secretary desk. It would make a nice project for the home office that uses a laptop or tablet.

Great video. How do you film the process? I like hearing the tool sounds. To me that's the best part of working with hand tools.
@TheHandToolery

Thank you! I used to do more voice over and such, and I still like to at times, but since I'm mostly just showing what I do (rather than trying to teach), I let the work and the tools and the sounds all speak for themselves. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!

Thank you! Soon, actually! I made one for him that I ultimately decided to paint and make for my daughter (it’s in my Instagram). But the chair is super easy to make-think the chairs Matthias Wandel has been making lately, but with a straight back.

It is really great! And You achieved it while using wrong hand all the time! (just kidding!) I never tried doing a desk before, so I have a question - wouldn't it be easier, if You glued drawer side rails while doing sides? Then You could make wider tenons on the lower front rail, and therefore - make it more stiff (it make take huge load, when the drawer is pulled out completely).
@TheHandToolery
@TheHandToolery 3 жыл бұрын
Ha! We can’t all be perfect 😂😂 About the drawer sides and the tenon, I think that the strength you gain in the tenon would be offset by the weakening of the leg mortise, since it would need to be larger too. Just my thought.

@@TheHandToolery Good point! I wish, that someday i would make my own desk. One drawer in center, and two recesses on sides, with access from above - with lids made with Rob's invisible hinges style, so it will look uniform - both front and the top! I think, that i would be able to do it, but first - I have to design it. So I watch videos and I try to gain some knowledge. I saw, that You've started new project - this could be useful, but not today - I'll definitely watch it some other time!

@@szymonz.7542 Oh cool! Do you follow "lacabraenlaescalera" on Instagram. He had a secret drawer recently, I believe? He does amazing work, and shows a lot of the design and construction process! Good luck with getting ideas. For me, that's the part where I get most stalled out. Once i'm settle on the design, I just move forward quite quickly. Cheers!

Such a great series, thank you for sharing this and everything else you've done. One question - did you just secure the top with screws? Will that allow enough flexibility for seasonal movement? Thanks!
@TheHandToolery
@TheHandToolery 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I had a blast! There is something about the simple style of this desk that I love. I did in fact use screws going through the drawers kicks at the top. The holes are elongated and allow for movement. 8 months on and still great!!

Hey! It’s a Stanley #45, combination plane. They are vintage and widely available but can run in excess of $100 for a useable one with a range of cutting irons.
