First person and third person are equally brilliant, and there's no right or wrong. Masterpieces have been written with each. But for me personally, I prefer writing fiction in first person. Why? Well that's what this video is about. Which do you prefer?

Chris watched the video in disbelief. The mere concept of a first person perspective sent a volley of cold nails into his chest. From his omniscient view, he watched helplessly as the world around him crumbled away until there was only one perspective left: mine. Great vid! I love these.

Haha Chris this put a huge smile on my face! Maybe I should branch out into third person, it does give a really nice "grand" feel sometimes. At least we're not all limited to *second* person - imagine that! Glad you enjoyed the video :)

After dabbling and experimenting over the years, I've come to settle on third person limited because it's just the perfect blend of both aspects you mentioned. I much prefer the flow and the writing of third person, but third person limited manages to evoke that intimate feel of getting into the head of a specific character, and capturing that suspense of only knowing what the character knows in that moment.

That's a really good point, I didn't even think about third person limited versus third person omniscient! You've inspired me to maybe dabble in third person, as long as it's limited. Interesting!

even though i've written a novel in 3rd person, i noticed i've been writing a lot of short stories recently in1st person. there is definitely something really fun about 1st person and about getting inside the character's head. i think both are great!

It sounds like first person is calling out to you Eve! Have you read The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath? Probably my favourite first person book of all time, and a great example of first person done well. Definitely recommend.

I completely agree. Less room for interpretation of why and what the character was reacting to, but as you mentioned (can be unreliable source). I feel like the character is telling me (and only me) a story. It's so hard for me to get into a book like Game of Thrones. The tv show was more accessible for me. Can't wait to see what Amz Prime does with Wheel of Time.

I like your pub perspective of storytelling. I've struggled with the big POV decision myself because I usually prefer to write in first person, but some genre expectations are really that readers prefer third person. I've also had some teachers/professors who really emphasized thinking through the identity of the narrator, which can be difficult in the third person.

It's one of the more fun questions isn't it? They're both equally great, both surprisingly different, and there's no right or wrong. Even within genre expectations, maybe there's room for a bit of a twist by choosing the less obvious POV? I'm glad to hear that you prefer writing in first person Jeremy, I think we're outnumbered!

I do prefer the personality and thoughts I can add when using first. However my next idea may be for a younger readership, where third seems to have the edge, maybe because the reader can’t quite get ‘in the head’ of third.

I think you're right, third person can often work a lot better for a younger readership. There are a lot of great books for younger readers written in first and third, but third seems a little more natural doesn't it?

I usually write first person and have done for years, but sometimes I use third, will do it in the same book with different POV and such!

I love the idea of mixing them, I think that can sometimes be really powerful when used well!

Man, you said the convenience of third person and my mind was a little blown. I see your reasoning now, but all my life I’ve viewed first person as the convenient, easier route because it’s easier to form a connection to the main character. I never really considered the advantages of third in terms of describing the world and other things. I always write third, usually multiple POVs. I’ve tried first but it’s so hard for me for whatever reason. But I love reading first person. The difference in style is always so interesting.

Now that I think about it, I guess they're both convenient in different ways aren't they? Third is convenient from an external sense, and first from an internal sense. I really love both, and third is especially great when there's multiple POVs. Almost impossible to pull that off in first person!

I tend to lean towards 3rd Person. But I can see the use of 1st person.

I enjoy writing both. It honestly depends on the story. With 3rd person there is 3rd omniscient (all-seeing narrator) and 3rd limited (showing everything the character sees). Agree that 1st especially works well for unreliable narrators. "Into The Water" by Paula Hawkins (same author who wrote "The Girl on the Train") has chapters in both 1st and 3rd person. It's an interesting stylistic choice although it made the book a little confusing at times. But yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong in having a reading/writing preference. It all depends on how you want to tell the story. There is the ever-illusive 2nd person, now I'd like to see more of that...

I wish I'd spoken a bit more about omniscient and limited, that's a really good point. I think if I ever write a third person story, it'll be limited. I do actually use little bursts of second person in my latest series, and that's really fun in small doses! :)
