To be fair, wearing a leather jacket when you ride a motorbike isn't cliche-it's just proper safety equipment!

Yah XD. My dad wore a leather jacket, smoked, rode a motorcycle, etc. I think it's important to remember in some cases sterotypes do exist and it's okay to use them(carefully)

I agree. What I love the most about such intense yet realistic romance is NOSTALGIC feeling. The scenes, the love between the characters that keeps rewinding in my head, long after I put the book down.

Definitely Looking for Alaska. Miles is this 'good boy'-type who never did anything crazy, never smoked, never drank, never had sex and so on. Alaska is the opposite of that, drinking, smoking, having sex and so on. Basically, Manic Pixie Dream Girl, which is, imo, pretty much the male version of the good girl&bad boy-trope.

Great to see more people talking about healthier ways of writing romance as well, realistic can be sexy. In fact, for me as a reader it is more sexy than falling for cliche' or getting into the trap of writing hostage romance. Great informative video, you clarified important aspects of the writing process I think a lot of writers will find extremely helpful.

I get ideas for novels at the most AWKWARD times. Take this morning for instance... I was in the traffic and had a pen and paper no where near me... I grabbed hold of my phone and started basically filming on my lap (a fabulous and flattering view of my nostrils) and I spoke for almost 30 mins about the idea that I came up with before I lost it. The things we do for our writing ;) hahaha I loved this video as my novel is going to be a contemporary, romance, womens fiction - thank you for all of the advice. Instalove.... urgh..... agree, I hate it. I really love Colleen Hoover and am busy with November 9 which speaks exactly about hating instalove in books but it is so interesting because the couple in the book go through instalove without realizing it. I don't know - it was a lot more elegantly done than your typical instalove story. Pride & Prejudice is one of my favorite films - Kiera Knightly was phenomenal. The scene you mentioned really stood out to me too.

Sooo glad I found this video today. I hope this is a great place to put a question. Hi! In my story, there is a budding romance at the beginning of the story that my main character loses. The first kiss happens before the story begins and the buildup from that point to the "What next?" that relationships tend to get to. I'm not sure that is enough time to have the reader care about the romance though, because after the 'inciting event' the romance cannot continue. Since the rest of the story doesn't have this romance as a subplot, should it be abandoned? What would your advice be? Thank you so much!

Great tips! As far as the dialogues are concermed, I am of the opinion that if the dialogues are advancing the story it's perfectly fine like it happens in the movies that the dialogues help to advance the story. I am an author and two of my novels entitled: "The Twilight Love: A Psychological Mystery Thriller Based on Sigmund Freud's Theories" and "Rise of Dracula: Reincarnation" are live on Amazon. The major bulk of my stories are contributed by the dialogues.

I have a question (anyone can answer this) Is it okay to add time jumps in a story? I'm currently writing a fanfiction about two people and the audience I've directed my story at knows who the people are and how close they actually are together in real life, and in my story the characters have only started to get to know one another. I have ideas for how they'll get along for the next few chapters but I want to skip to where they're closer so I don't bore my readers but I don't know if a skip would ruin the story.

Thank you! I get so annoyed when there are romantic books or whatever that they just focus on love with just appearance. Love is from within, not on the outside. Also that it takes time, and shouldn't be quicked pace like how movies or books can make it be. If they have shown or explained how that has built to to friends, to crush and so on, then it makes it good like how you were saying. Since in reality, that's how true love works. Like how I said, it takes time to keep that love going and figure out why someone loves someone. If it's just based on physical appearance, then it's not true love. Must be deeper than physical attraction. Anyway, I know I'm repeating myself and I'm sorry. I explain things terribly. 😂

I have two main characters, whom haven't a clear goal. Both are just sort of in their own throws of life, and when they begin interacting with one another, this spurs a reshuffling of ideas, what it is they want out of life, each feeding into the character growth of the other....that ultimately leads into the seeds being planted of their own budding romance.... Is this appropriate? Is it okay that initially they haven't a clear goal, romantically at least, beyond their own forward progression in life?

Thanks, that was very interesting. I'm currently working on a romance novel aimed at the "Modern" slot. I've got an idea in the outline that I can't decide if it's good or bad. Viktor is the billionaire owner of a computer company. He takes on Jodie as a technical expert, but they both find they are physically attracted, and that leads to love. He takes Jodie as one member of a small team by private jet to negotiate a contract in Central America. Things go wrong and the dictator's son (Ramon) tries to kidnap Jodie. Viktor pulls a stunt that lets him rescue Jodie and get her on the jet disguised as one of the crew. She expects him to ask her to marry him, but he feels that after the rescue she'd feel pressured to accept, and decides to wait. She is so disappointed that later, when they are on the next trip in Cologne, Germany she writes a letter explaining that she is breaking it off, and she is going to stay with her sister in Vancouver before vanishing forever to the Far East. He finds the letter and manages to get to the airport in time to catch her at check in, explains that he really does love her and proposes in public. She tears the ticket up and they live HEA. Now I like it, but will anyone else? Thanks for any input you can give.

I had this question for a really long time and I haven’t been able to find anything that clearly defines the answer. If you’re writing a book that has A pretty good amount of low level swearing in it, but little to no sexual content and graphic violence, Can that still be YA? Or does the fact that it has a lot of swearing make it an Adult book? I’d love your opinion. I live in Mormonville and asking people here tends to skew the results.

hi! im a young recent writer (i am 13, and I've been working on my storyline for a few weeks now.). you, having more experience might be able to help me to decide a bit for the future of my story. I'm writing about a medieval inspired story. one where women have as many rights as men. but, as it is a romantic novel, I've got to ask how could i make it sound as if the male character was not in love with the female character, but you can feel that he is falling for her? i find it quite hard to do so. but to make it easier for you to help me build the chemistry between them, the story is about young queen who's fallen in love with a prisoner (who didn't commit a crime, but was taken a long with many others during a war between two kingdoms) as she looks for a motive to let them free, she finds herself into one of the prisoners, but he feels despise towards her. there are scenes where they have intimate relations, and he soon finds himself starting to care about her. then on, both the characters end up in a relationship, where she lets the prisoner from the other kingdom free, which is where the story would end, but a twist i added was that the queen herself was writing about her experiences as if it was her journal, and I'm sort of a narrator. what can i change, what can i add, and how do i improve it overall? thanks {:

WELL.... 😂 though, I did do the main heroine confection in the 4th chapter 😂 but it was played for laughs. she was like "hi! you saved my life once, therefore I love you!" -neeing down and giving him her hand- "will you marry me?" 😂 I love that scene. especially since she said it next to his childhood friend (who was inlove with him for ages) and she literally splashed the drink she drank right out of her mouth. only it was literally the first thing that my main heroine ever said to him upon second meeting 😂

It's funny that love is the only insta-feeling. Literally nobody has ever written a story with insta-hate. Probably because so few people have experienced love and those who have can't necessarily quantify the experience or how they got there. I find myself having difficulty with developing a bond between two characters that may turn into romance, but may just as easily be strong friendship. Being both male and an introvert I have two strikes against me when understanding human emotion.

I’m having trouble trying to make my male love interest not sooooo cliche. What would be your recommendation to make him not so “tall, dark & British?” Lmao

If there can be insta-hate then what’s wrong with insta-love? Why have such high, complicated criteria for loving someone and such low bar for hating?

I am writing this fictional romantic erotica. 🤔 the problem I have is how to build up the romance. I mean, it's easy to write the bed scene and stuff but writing about how they fall in-love is hard. I want them to take it slow, I want them to love each other like it's climbing steps. Man the scenarios....it's hard to think. I mean, writing dates, dude being a gent and stuff is too cliché.

Nice to know that in my teen years I was a cliche. Tall, dark, and handsome. Scared with tattoos. Troubled past. Speaks with an English accent. Rides a motorcycle and has a leather jacket. Yep, I was a majority holder in the bad boy cliche. (No tattoos, no motorcycle, and no leather jacket anymore either.)

I have a small story so far where there's a guy called Lawrance who had a husband and he's extremely far in depression because his husband died (like, cuts himself, starves himself, doesn't leave the house). He has an extremely good friend (the only one he trusts) who actually has loved him for a long time, but she obviously has never said anything, and probably never will. Then, I have another old friend which basically says "I have a sleepover. You need to get out of that house. So, come or I'll drag you there myself." So he has to go and when he does, there's two people he doesn't know. One of them, says hi, and immediately he knows he's got a big storm comin'.he knows he likes him but absolutely hates himself for it and knows if he tells him, like Savannah says "You'd be stuck in an endless drop, And Every time you reached for the top, The pain kept coming the tears didn't stop." I wouldnt count it as an 'insta romance' because the guy doesn't know he likes Lawrance yet. Lawrance has a few disabilities too... IM An InNoCeNt TeN YeAr oLd

Well, I am 17 years old, I had my share of girls and I know that you find that special girl when that girl starts to fart in the bedroom. That's real love ladies and Gentleman. The little Idiocracies is real intimacy such as a girl burping is cute. Girls trying to play video games is even cooler to please their boyfriend. I mean the book we should write should be realistic. Fighting should be done because of a mother in law for example... which is more realistic than a girl who fights about her boyfriend because of other girls. Sex is usually clumsy among teenagers and not sexy at all... So writers should write about one's struggles to please his girlfriend or boyfriend. In the beginning of a romance novel comedy is an essential tool that the male and female must use to get closer to one another. It is usually comedy that brings humans together, sexual appeal doesn't, because if I see a sexy girl, I probably would hesistate to even talk to her, while if I see a funny girl, I will immediately trust her and talk to her.

Wait, what kind of English accent? Sometimes authors misuse them it becomes really funny. I read a book recently where the British love interest was from Leeds and knowing people from there, the accent just really made me laugh.
