THE LAST WATCH author J.S. Dewes discusses her debut sci-fi novel. We explore her edge-of-the-universe world-building, its military/prisoner/found-family character dynamics, the "competence porn" trope, and her non-linear 'pantsing' writing method for the space opera adventure.

ABOUT 'THE LAST WATCH'
The Expanse meets Game of Thrones in J. S. Dewes's fast-paced, sci-fi adventure The Last Watch, where a handful of soldiers stand between humanity and annihilation.
The Divide.
It’s the edge of the universe.
Now it’s collapsing-and taking everyone and everything with it.
The only ones who can stop it are the Sentinels-the recruits, exiles, and court-martialed dregs of the military.
At the Divide, Adequin Rake commands the Argus. She has no resources, no comms-nothing, except for the soldiers that no one wanted. Her ace in the hole could be Cavalon Mercer--genius, asshole, and exiled prince who nuked his grandfather's genetic facility for “reasons.”
She knows they’re humanity's last chance.

I binged the hell out of this novel and it’s sequel. It wasn’t just the great world building but characters that hook you in. Such contrasting personalities that work so well together (Cav and Adequin make for great duteragonists). Loved it all. Mesa is best girl though. Also I am SO with you when you said you were pissed off at only being 150 pages in, I had to work and it REALLY pissed me off when I had to put it down

I've since read both novels in the series (so far) and loved them. Can't wait for the third one (which I think she is editing now).

Really an excellent book. Noticed it last second in a B&N this weekend, already had 4 books but what could one more hurt? The first 50 to 60 pages was still not sure i was digging it, but similar to Gideon the 9th, it just took off, couldn't put it down, finished it in 3 days. Strong characters, good action, interesting speculative science and technology, gave me some Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama vibes near the end. Anyway, highly recommend
