the hunt for the truth in fly fishing is continuing. We all got brain washed by a foolish concept that does not rerflect the truth nor help anyone to become a better caster.
The loop is nothing but a poser tool to intimidate people and to make learning to cast even more difficult.
FlyQ focusses on knowledge and understanding from the past to the future with the goal of reaching the flow state in fly fishing. The conceptual mistake of the loop is a hindrance to do so. If you want to learn how to execute control on the hghest level with a fly rod and line, I recommend to forget about this bro sciental concept and stick to something with more substance in the future: the science of control theory.
FlyQ stands for Questions, the flyfisher intelligence and the personal learning quest in a sense of growth mind set.

Tack Michael. Det är det bästa jag någonsin sett under alla år (24) som jag har tränat flugkast. Vadhar du för kamera när du filmar? Tack för att du textar då jag är dålig på det engelska språket.

Well I started from E1 after your reply. Can you show/explain what exactly is this loop that is a bad thing or do you explain it somewhere and I've missed it? Overhead casting is bad and everyone should use cool cast and wave spey? Is scandi spey or underhand cast ok? Of course I'll be trying the cool cast tomorrow, wave spey I've been using for few years, saw some video where Klaus Frimor does it. Or is it the fact that when you lift the line for most spey casts you sort of have to get the timing right to make it work. If that, then OPST and their continuous tension skagit cast is already there and Byske cast has been around forever, just reset it as many times you need and cast it out.

Putting the line on the rod is completely unnecessary. It's down to physics, tighter loops are more efficient at penetrating the air at speed.

I do not understand why you are slandering casting instructors and present the concept of loop as a complicated and an obscure phenomenon that nobody can explain. Here is a very fundamental and simple explanation: In fly fishing, the lure (the fly) is practically weightless with a lot of drag potential, so one cannot effectively and instantly transfer enough energy to the fly to throw it to a long distance. The next best thing is to attach a considerable mass to that weightless fly and energize the big mass. This way the fly can piggyback to the energized, moving mass and can go to a distance. However, we also want certain style of arrival at a distance. We do not want locomoting mass to crash into the water and make a big splash. Afterall, we are fishing, and we wouldn't want the fish to run away from the fly. One way to perform smooth landing upon arrival is for locomoting mass to gradually loose its mass/energy on the way. At the end, only fly arrives at the destination with little energy and makes a smooth landing. In fly fishing this gradual reduction in mass/energy is made possible by implementing the locomoting mass as a long (usually 30ft) supple line. For simplicity let's imagine we are not shooting any line but just casting the 30ft head (the locomoting mass) and the fly. With the rod we are transferring energy to this 30ft long mass. The mass can even be piled up on the ground and we can catapult it. However, in that case, we would transfer only the energy generated by our arm during catapulting and most of that energy would be wasted making the pile (locomoting mass) airborne. If we start with the line already in the air going in the opposite direction, we can use the energy of the line and our arm together to load the rod (store the energy first in the rod) and transfer this total to the line to send it in the forward direction. This is the reason we backcast first. However, this is not that important. That is, whether we start with a pile on the ground or perfectly aligned line in the air, the idea is the same: We will energize the mass (line) with the rod and as soon as we stop the rod, the portion of the line attached to the tip of the rod will stop as well. However, since the rest of the line is in motion, the tip stopping will cause a protrusion. By controlling where and how you stop the tip, you can control the shape of this protrusion. But, whatever its shape is, this protrusion has two "legs", one is attached to the tip of the rod, the other is attached to the fly. The leg attached to the tip is pulling to stop the line, the leg attached to the fly is free and moving. As the tip stops more line, the locomoting mass and its energy get less and less until there is no forward movement and the whole thing collapses. (casting complete.) At the completion of casting, (just before collapse) we want the line to be straight and the fly to be the furthest out with the least amount of effort. This is possible by minimizing the fight against the gravity and the air drag. That is the reason we want the protrusion to be a tight horizontal looplike shape. The wider the loop (or more irregular the protrusion) the higher the forward-facing area so higher the drag. The more upward or less horizontal the loop, the more fight against the gravity. Both will result in shorter distances, or require more energy to achieve the same distance. So tight horizontal loop is a good thing. And it is achieved by stopping rod in a certain way.

How is energy transferred? And why do you have to stop a fly rod? Find that out and you ll understand why I slander instructors and also why the loop is a conceptual mistake. Here's another question for you: did the loop ever do something for you to improve your casting? The trickiest thing to understand is that the loop is always only a delayed feedback to what u just did. Delayed and not real time. That's why it's so difficult to improve on the loops foundational thinking. It does not reflect the reality. And instructors became useless. Useless because they stopped asking questions and revising themselves and the sport and the effects of the teachings of the loop. The loop is nothing but a poser show off tool intended to impress people to trick them into buying new gear. A marketing gag like santander claus. Works well? The science of control theory would actually classify the loop understanding as insanity loop of addiction. One of the core questions is Why do you have to stop a fly rod? Go and ask that the next instructor u ll meet. Cheers and thanks for your time and commenting.

@@coolcaster Energy is transferred through the bending/unbending of the rod. Not much different than a catapult. The rod has to stop otherwise unbending will never occur. The question is when and how to stop the rod. You do it in a way that the line forms a horizontal tight loop. This minimizes the drag and maximizes the distance.

I actually think that stopping is unnecessary.. because the only thing a bend rid does is become straight. Totally without any stop.

@@self-taught_angler I don't think we are ever going to reconcile with Michael. How do you NOT stop the rod - wave it around in mid air forever? I know how to make tight or open loops but don't get hung up on them. I cast appropriately for what I want to accomplish and don't worry about exactly what the loop looks like. Where the fly lands is what counts.

I don't understand your hang-up with loops or stopping the rod. Seems to me you were stopping the rod and forming loops yourself as it is difficult not to do when fly casting. How do you NOT stop the rod? Stopping the rod does not have to be the exaggerated stop you showed. No matter how you do it you are forming a loop with every cast, forward or back, good or bad. You did a lot of talking but not much showing so I never really got to understand just what your big problem with conventional casting instruction was other than the vague loops and stopping the rod inferences. I enjoyed viewing your videos more for amusement than education

I doubt the loop in itself. It makes flycasters look in the wrong direction and it is senseless as nobody can tell where the loop is coming from, when it starts and ends. Where to measure it's tightness is another uncertainty and if you ask yourself honestly what the loop is good for...you ll find what I say. The loop in itself is BS, my man. Why could Alexander grant outcast us for 100 years without a loop? Because its not there. Made up fake wrap to make you believe u need a new rod or line or both. I only uploaded another episode wherevi talk about that ff is out of control . The loop is a big part of that problem. Because it doesn't help to increase the control over the system at all.

I didn’t understand anything from Michael at first, but also I was stuck for 20 years chasing the instructors hoping that someone would give me the key to a good loop control, yes I got it, but at what price, I didn’t enjoy fishing for 18 years the same way I’m doing it now after leaning more in to the vibration form and not in to a shocking form, remember mastering the acceleration in to a stop is the primary goal to a good LOOP/cast, I think we shock the stop because we can’t control how much it’s too much acceleration we put in the rod blank 🤔when in reality the way I see it, it’s about funneling the rod blank vibrations to the fly line from the tempo not from power or effort they both must form a balance part of the cast but they should never be mixed but go together in order, effort in one side and tempo in the other, tempo helping to tame the vibrations created from the effort or force, they separate, like oil and water they can be contained in the same bottle, but they will never be mixed if we don’t “shock” the bottle, this vibration form concept it’s a better path to control the end of the fly line hands down😊 That’s how I see it now and that’s how I enjoy fly fishing more than ever before… f*** catching 🐟 - 🫶FLY Q Keep up the good work Michael, storm it’s coming !!😎👏🫡
