The weight of the logs is way too much on the trailer...not enough weight on the truck to have good traction...

As a Log truck driver (from Northern California) its simple why this truck didnt make it up the hill....yes lockers to help and should have been engaged(if hill was straight with no turns...if hill did have any kind of a turn in it with lockers fully locked in truck wouldn't be able to steer and would just push straight) so theres 1 reason...2nd..this guy didnt have enough speed built up for the hill...3rd reason and most importantly of all...the truck was loaded too heavy on the ass end and not loaded heavy enough up front on the drivers(drive axles)...I've climbed thousands of hills...steep ass hills...and the trick of the trade is to put as much weight up front as possible by having the "butt" ends of the logs up front and keep the trailer lite....plus as i said...having speed built up for the hill and having all lockers locked in if hill is straight.

The problem is simple-- no lockers in the differentials... A truck like this should have 4 of them. However, thanks to the US Army's policy that it is better to be Dead than to have one in a truck-- you get this situation all the time.

@brandonwinquest3 жыл бұрын
This truck has lockers. Drove one for 2 years. You need to activate emergency mode. There is no low gear in these trucks, just that damn allison 5 speed. But anyways, emergency mode locks all 8 in and drops tire pressure down to 10 psi. 💯💯
@mountainguyed673 жыл бұрын
Some people think all “Emergency” does is tire pressure. It has a dual purpose, depends which light is lit. If “Mud Sand & Snow” is lit, but the knob is pointed to Emergency, you’re in “Mud, Sand, Snow” tire pressure, and all ten wheels are engaged.

@ericl29694 жыл бұрын
@@73Datsun180B As others have said, the lockers are there, but either are not engaged or the actuating controls are broken. That said, hardly anyone knows that an unlocked diff doesn't cause the stationary wheel to be useless (as you are implying). The torque on the right and left axles are always equal with an open diff, and thus, the tractive effort applied to the ground is exactly the same on both sides. the tractive effort is NOT zero for the non-slipping wheel. The non-spinning wheel IS helping just as much as the spinning wheel. That's not to say lockers don't help. They do, but this is also why lockers do the most good when the spinning wheel has poor traction (limiting the tractive force applied to the other side to that same, low level), but only help a small amount when the spinning wheel has good traction (where the non-spinning side with an open diff is already contributing quite a lot). I know most people won't understand this, but some will. I'd have to write pages to explain exactly how/why this is.

Vehicles with brakes at each wheel can use them like a limited slip. Press brakes with only enough pressure to stop the free spinning wheels. This more evenly distributes the power and keeps it from only using the path of least resistance.

How dafuq are separate wheel breaks controlled? Do you just... flip some switches? Or have a pedal for each
@njinthemj523 жыл бұрын
@@MrCh0o regular brakes, single pedal. It's all about making it so that each wheel is as hard to turn as the rest. If one is much easier to spin than the others, power will only go to it.
@MrCh0o3 жыл бұрын
@@njinthemj52 Yeah, but then the wheel that makes better contact with surface will still be harder to turn, won't it?
@njinthemj523 жыл бұрын
@@MrCh0o yes it will be slightly more difficult, but the engine will overcome light brake applications. The goal is having each wheel about as easy to turn as the rest. For example: (arbitrary numbers used) Slipping wheels takes 5 units of force to spin Gripping wheel takes 20 units of force to spin Pressing the brakes adds 100 units to every wheel. So, with brakes applied slipping wheels needs 105 and gripping needs 120 units to turn. 20/5 is 4 120/105 is about 1.14. The ratio of force needed to spin each tire is now much closer than without the brakes applied.
