WTF Happened to Axl Rose?

As far as rock stars go, they don’t get much bigger than Axl Rose. As the front-man of Guns N’ Roses, he became an instant legend when their debut album, “Appetite for Destruction” was released in 1987. Spawning hits that are still iconic twenty-five years later (with the soundtrack for Thor: Love and Thunder featuring them prominently), including “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,” and “Sweet Child of Mine,” the album broke out from the hard rock/heavy metal genre to become one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Throughout the late eighties and early nineties, they were one of the biggest bands in the world, with “Use Your Illusion 1 & 2” also major sellers. Axl Rose was everywhere, especially when the band started doing ballads like “Don’t Cry” and “November Rain.”
Yet, after the release of their covers album, “The Spaghetti Incident,” Guns N’ Roses started to fall apart, with iconic guitarist Slash and Duff McKagan leaving acrimoniously. Rose would spend most of the next decade working on a follow-up album, “Chinese Democracy,” with an ever-revolving lineup of members, with the album in question a critical and commercial disappointment.
In the meantime, rumours about Rose’s behaviour and sobriety ran rampant. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we try to separate fact from fiction and celebrate the fact that Rose has since reunited much of the original band and that they still sell out stadiums worldwide.
What do you think of Guns N’ Roses, and what’s your favorite song from the band? Let us know in the comments!

Age is what happened. Jesus. Cracks me up when people immortalize celebrities. He's just a regular guy that aged. Like we are all doing. Gained a few pounds. Sang a million hours on stage and in rehearsals. So that takes a toll on the voice, body, mind and soul. Kudos to any of these old rock stars that are still out there. Whether they sound good or not, they are old but have the courage to keep going and open themselves up to criticism.

I was a touring musician for almost 30 years. No rockstar - just Vegas showrooms and cruise ships. Off the road I would get polluted. Acid and every other goody. 4 months out of the year for decades. I'm 59 and a physical wreck. I can't imagine what Axl has put himself through over that first 20 years of GNR. If he's making folks happy, God bless him. He will be in the American song book forever. Let the man do what he loves, for the folks that want to go have a blast. Shit, Alice Cooper is almost 80 and selling out shows. Very devoted fans spanning 3 generations at every show

I really love November Rain, it is good for healing the loses of our loved ones which we all lost many especially if up in age like Axl age. I will be turning 65 years of age it hard for me to grasp that age number. But really a person feels like oneself all through the years. You forgot to mention that Axl was (briefly) the lead singer of AC/DC too, when Brian Johnson was forced to quit touring due to hearing problems, Axl himself actually offered to step in and help them finish out the tour. Rumour has it that Angus Young made it abundantly clear to Axl that he was not to f around and turn up late to shows etc, and to his credit Axl didn't. He was a consummate professional and showed the utmost respect the legendary band he was stepping into, and actually smashed it as their lead singer! He even stepped aside while on stage to let Angus do his thing, understanding that this was very much Angus' band, and Axl didn't want to steal the limelight from him. There's footage of him performing with AC/DC on KZfaq, and he sounds fantastic! His voice was actually a perfect fit for their songs!

From mid '80s till the mid 90's, my teenage room was covered wall to wall with Axl posters. Almost every penny I could spare from my already poor allowance, would go into Gn'R albums, posters and various other memorabilia. Nowadays, with everything being so readily and easily available through the net, it is difficult to imagine how hard we had to struggle back then, to buy an LP, or even gather info on our favorite bands. Still a fan, after more than 3 decades, and I always remember those years as the best years of my life. G'nR defined and dominated almost all my adolescence, and Axl will always be an icon for me. He may have grown older, but he still rocks!

Until some irate adult would storm in and yell "Turn that f....n noise off before I smash that f...n record over ya f...n stupid head!". I think they'd call it "child abuse" nowadays. A phenomenal performer because he wasn't so much performing as showing up and singing what needed to be sung in just the perfect way it needed to be sung. Do you know how many people I have met that got migraines for years until I taught them 'Be Axl Rose' and sing You could be mine and MEAN IT. They have all this trapped anger and are usually people who feel that must always appear nice and understanding etc. At first they look at me like 'I can't do THAT and I CANNOT POSSIBLY SAY THAT!!!!!' Do you want migraines or not? When they allow themselves to go into it (I think we've seen that movie tooooooo/ Why must you find.... another reason to cry?) and even, for a split second, feel that one nerve release...Boom. No more migraines. I tell them that they will be laughing in seconds and usually, if they get to the nerve and let go, they naturally start bubbling up and having fun with it.

Played 2 songs never before played live. Axl dodnt sound like he did in the 90's but it was my favorite concert ever. Ive seen at least 100 big shows in 30+ years. Slash was on fire. Duff had one of the best base tones live ever in my opinion. Gnr wasnt my favorite band, but it was incredible. They dont need the money. They did it for the fans. They had something to prove and did, big time. People were putting axle down for gis voice. I didnt see one person complain, or more importantly, didnt see one person leave early, even running 2 hrs over. Baltimore got a real treat that night. Ill never forget it! Unfortunately 10 years ago, GnR was FAR beyond their prime and concert tickets for their "Reunion Tour" was over $1,000 for decent seats. I sure as fuck wasn't going to spend THAT much to see a Bloated, off key Axl Rose, and Steven Adler wasn't even involved with the "REUNION TOUR". Anyways, I always thought how fucking AWESOME it would have been to be at the "Live At The Roxy, NY" concert back when these guys were still a relatively new band. Of course singing incredibly demanding songs in their original form will lead to to some bad moments. Check out Live and Let Die from San Diego in 2016. Pure vintage Axl. Edit:$1000 for a ticket 😂 I've seen them 4 times for less than that. That includes a scalped stand ticket for San Diego in 2016 where I was in the 2nd row. Travelled all the way from Scotland and it was worth every penny.

@@lewismckenzie236 Well, here in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena during that So-called reunion tour, (That was how it was advertised on the radio here)seats from rows 1-15 were a no less than $1,000. Like I said, idgaf, I wasn't gonna pay that to see NOT the original lineup of that band, nope, no way, no thankyou. I'd need to force myself to take Steven Adler amounts of cocaine, and drink Duff amounts of booze to talk myself into doing that.

I paid $25.00 to see them in their prime in 1991 with Izzy still in the band. I didn't even accept a free ticket from a friend to see them on the reunion tour. That would have killed the awesome memory I had of seeing guns n roses when they were relevant and ruled the world.....

He's older! The man is a legend, and no vocalist can touch that range. A tenor who can hold notes 3 octaves higher, for as long as he does, or did, deserves the highest respect. I'm more into the heavier side of metal, but gnr was the first and will always hold a personal section of my heart.

I don't know about no vocalist reaching his range. Phil Anselmo definitely hit notes that seemed impossible. Especially when it comes to how deep and gruff his voice actually is when he speaks. Medicine Man from CfH has him almost shattering glass and that's only one of many examples. Axl's got a legendary pitch reach but I can't say nobody else can hit it. This Love from VDoP is worth a mention aswell with Phil's range but all of Cowboys From Hell shows more of what Anselmo can do when it comes to extreme range. Coma is one of the songs that proves Axl can hit low and high effortlessly but all of AFD would be the best example for that IMO. Edit- I have to mention Chris Cornell's phenomenal vocals in Jesus Christ Pose aswell. Absolutely eardrum vibrating pitch👌🏻🤘🏻.

You know how fans would cry for Michael Jackson. That is how I am with Axl Rose. Literally brings tears to my eyes because I was just 4 or 5 years old and admired him and so did my dad. True legend. Always

@@worsethanhitlerpt.2539 that isn’t fair, you don’t know exactly what went down between him and the others. Axl is more sensitive than people realise and obviously what ever specific events happened hurt him deeply
