Part 2: • Axl Rose in court (Par...
Slash and Adler met their future Guns N' Roses bandmates when they placed an ad in The LA Times searching for a bassist for their band. Duff McKagan responded to the ad, and later worked with Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin in Hollywood Rose, who Slash had originally auditioned for, before merging with LA Guns (Rob Gardner, Tracii Guns and Ole Beich) to create Guns N' Roses.
The three joined Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin to create the most famous and "original" line-up of Guns N' Roses. Adler drummed on the first two GN'R albums: the multi-platinum Appetite for Destruction and G N' R Lies. Adler's work also appeared on one song on Use Your Illusion II, the opening track "Civil War", although his drum track is said to be heavily edited.[5]
In late 1987, while Guns N' Roses was on tour, an intoxicated Adler broke his hand when he punched a streetlight after a barroom brawl. Fred Coury from the band Cinderella substituted on drums for several shows until Adler recovered.[6] At the 1989 American Music Awards, where Guns N' Roses performed their latest single, "Patience," Nobody filled in for Adler on drums because no drums were planned for the song and it ended up being acoustic only song. Officially, the absence was attributed to a case of the flu; it was later revealed that Adler had actually been in a drug rehabilitation program at the time.
Problems continued in 1990, as the band recorded "Civil War" for Nobody's Child, an album benefiting the Romanian Angel Appeal. Axl Rose has said in interviews that "Civil War was recorded a good 60 times" due to problems with Adler[citation needed] ; Slash, in another article, stated that the band had to edit the drum track to "Civil War" simply to be able to play along with it.[5] By Adler's own admission, he tried to play the song "20, maybe 30 times."[3] During the recording of "Civil War" Adler was still trying to stop using drugs.[4]
Adler was briefly fired from the band, but was reinstated after signing a contract promising to stop using drugs.[7] In July 1990, he performed with Guns N' Roses at Farm Aid IV in Indiana. It would be his last appearance with the band. When problems in the studio continued, he was formally fired on July 11, 1990,[8][9] during the recording of the Use Your Illusion I & Use Your Illusion II albums, and replaced with Matt Sorum. The official reason for his departure, according to various members of the band, was his heavy substance abuse which impeded his ability to work. Geffen A&R rep Tom Zutaut, who worked with Guns N' Roses, corroborated this claim, stating in a 1999 interview, "Steven Adler would show up at the recording studio completely high. Recording sessions would abort for several days when he couldn't put it together."[10]
In October 1991, he filed a lawsuit against his former Guns N' Roses bandmates, claiming that they were responsible for his drug addiction and that the contracts he had signed actually took away his financial interest in the band.[11] In a 2005 interview he stated, "Doug Goldstein called me into the office about two weeks later. He wanted me to sign some contracts. I was told that every time I did heroin, the band would fine me $2,000. There was a whole stack of papers, with colored paper clips everywhere for my signatures. What these contracts actually said was that the band were paying me $2,000 to leave. They were taking my royalties, all my writing credits. They didn't like me anymore and just wanted me gone. That's why I filed the lawsuit - to get all those things back."[3][9]
Adler's lawsuit against his former Guns N' Roses bandmates was settled out of court in 1993. He received a back-payment check of $2,250,000 USD and was granted 15% of the royalties for everything he recorded prior to his departure.

I like how, in court, Slash is referred to as Slash as opposed to his legal name.
@SINC0MENTARI0S
@SINC0MENTARI0S 11 ай бұрын
That's for ease of reference. For instance, other witnesses might not be acquainted with Slash's legal name. Also the rest of the evidence most likely mentions "Slash", and thus sticking to that name would make it easier for the jury to keep up with the evidence.

@@David-ix1uvGenerally speaking, one purpose does not preclude the other. This case, though, wasn't a dispute between Axl and Slash. It was between Steven Adler and GnR. You need to be mindful of the context. Saying "Slash" merely to impress on the jury the notion of trouble would be pointless there. It's even likely to backfire because Slash and Axl were on the same side of the lawsuit.

Look up the lyrics to all those songs and tell me what drug reference you see. And the last one, Nightrain was specifically stated by Slash that it is "about a walk in the park" and has nothing to with drugs. Mr. Brownstone is the only song on the whole Appetite album about drug use. Stop posting ignorant comments about stuff you clearly know nothing about.

@DashaA4572Mescheryakova Brigades Right?!?! Axl’s range is beyond! He had a very hard childhood from what I understand and as awful as it was on a child … I’m sure it molded his ability to sing through the roof. The times that were so hard he had to dig down and pull that voice from deep inside. It became his gift and his ability to write songs and sing. I’m so glad he “made it” out and his gift is shared with so many. I’m sure he lives with the scars and that is tragic. Selfishly his fans gain from his pain in a way…. His vocal range. His stage presence. It’s clear many many people appreciate his talent. Thank you Axl for making your way up to share with many. I've watched many interviews with "Axl" and he's the same man in that courtroom chair. Calm, reserved, charming, thinks before he speaks and when he speaks, intelligent and graceful. He reminds me of another band frontman who also thought deeply and spoke with a quiet, intelligent demeanor but was a demon on stage. Morrison was the same in his interviews and, of course, in court. I respect both of them greatly and wish I could've been a friend and hung out with them. They seem to be very honest and kind, but also uninhibited and unapologetically their true selves which I envy and strive for in my own life. Axl is and always will be one of the coolest motherfuckers to have graced the planet.

Technically, that's William sitting in that Courtroom chair, not Axl. 😀😉😏 Axl would have been gyrating, singing, crawling on the floor, cussing, dancing, flipping the bird, etc. William is calm, cool, collected, mature, rational, in control. 😏😉😀

While known for being volatile on stage, He's quite a bit more reserved in court... quiet, definitely not stupid; he knows how not to answer questions that haven't been asked, and to not volunteer any information that doesn't need to be. I don't know if the attorney questioning him is his own counsel or the opposing side's, but he's smart enough to pause and occasionally remain quiet after being questioned, to make sure that the attorneys battle it out between themselves before he jumps in with an answer. The guy might be a powder keg on stage, but he's either been coached very well for this deposition, or he's intelligent enough to know how to act. His quiet demeanor here isn't an accident. He knows what he's doing.

He was arrested numerous amounts of time in Indiana. He was shuffled through the system/court his first half of his life. The judge was going to lock him up for good and that's when he fled to L.A. So I'm not surprised and how he handles himself and answers these questions.

Thank God he escaped Indiana. It says a lot about a place when one is harassed and assumed to be a criminal. He was treated like a human being in California, and that is why Guns and Roses exists. For all the expense, California is still a magical place. Indiana is not much more than farms and factories and closeted homosexual Republicans.

Garry - There's certainly no doubt about what you say, that some states are easier than others when it comes to certain laws, (like CA.), but I'm not so sure that this video is of him "on trial" though... it looks more like a deposition. Please. We're talking about colossal amounts of money here. And artists don't see near what they deserve for the art. It's the record comapies and the lawyers. And he was well coached by lawyers. Period. A "really intelligent" person would know better not to incite a riot, something he was given two years probation for doing. I know in your hero worship world, he can do no wrong. But he was extra stupid for what he did in St. Louis, and then storming off stage when he thought security didn't back up his stupid move good enough? Classic.

It was pretty ridiculous. But Adler felt he had the right to get his royalties..and actually I agree. I personally find Stephen Adler to be sad and obnoxious, but fair is fair. I know Axl is really the genius behind the band, did the best songwriting and of course was the front man and vocalist, who is therefore irreplaceable. I don't know all the details because I wasn't there. I'm sure A LOT happened between the band members because they had such a crazy and wild life, touring, writing and recording music, filming videos, and then having their own drug/alcohol/sex issues with their groupies and girlfriends, etc.

This is why I love Axl. Even though it was painful for him to say it, he didn't hide his disgust with the drug use that continued long after he himself had quit (as he stated in COUNTLESS interviews). Even Slash referred to Axl as the most honest person he'd ever met. Add that anxiety to the freak-outs he used to have regarding his horrific childhood and it's no wonder he showed up late for shows and reacted the way he did to situations like the ones in St Louis and Montreal.

Fair, but when James Hetfield caught on fire he didn’t need to stop the show and sit on the riser like a baby and barely sing. He could’ve been the hero for the show, I get his horrific childhood and I love him and the band but, still he’s a singer and his voice starting to hurt was not an excuse

+Lydia Reymer he didnt aged gracefully, some people have hat on their pockets, like John Bon jovi , for example and probably he has been on some kind of legal drugs his entire life and that adds on the weight department, I think his looks degradating is a reflection on his strugle inside , he was sooo beautifull unique looking and very intimidating in a seductive way.

It's called getting older. It happens to all the pretty young flowers. Axl was GORGEOUS when he was young. Yeah, he has bipolar disorder and I think he was taking medications which caused weight gain and bloating. Young girl, someday you will be OLD! (That's a quote from another great musician from a song by Morrissey)

Axl is staring at that mic after the prosecutor asked about Duff's drug use and he was screaming inside... Axl was and is a very intelligent guy. He didn't want to sell out his bandmates. Steven Adler was a junkie 15 years after GnR... It's not their fault. It was the road and the life. He couldn't handle it.

It's interesting how he looks straight forward while making an answer. No clue about he is remembering, or creating a lie. But maybe he was remembering what he and his lawyers had practiced to say in court.

Axl is doing a perfect job on the stand by means of taking his time to think about what he will say and how he will say it.... very smart and also allows his lawyer the maximum opportunity to object or Interject something.

Honestly, I think he behaved really well for the way the man badgered him about drug use. He kept his eyes on his lawyer and patiently awaited someone to excuse him from his answers. Additionally, I didn't really realize that Mr. Brownstone went that deep. I can't believe he had the creative liberties in his song stripped down so deep. At least he cracked a smile when the judge make the hum joke but I just feel so offended that they put him on trial and treated him like he was a spokesperson for the entire band and their drug usages on tour. I just wished it would've been a more relevant interrogation because it sounds like the public offender didn't have much to go on at all.

Public "offender"? what does that mean? The 2nd part of this video suggests that this testimony was in regard to Adler's lawsuit against GnR. Most likely the one examining the witness (i.e., Axl) was Adler's lawyer. Although there's nothing wrong with asking a witness about his peers' drug abuse, I agree that this attorney's questions are pointless and a waste of "judicial resources".
