WTF Happened to The Warriors?

Walter Hill’s The Warriors is a cult classic. Since its release in 1979, audiences have returned to this tightly woven tale of a gang of rebels stuck on a rival territory following a big gang meet-up gone awry. There’s so much quotable dialogue (“warriors, come out to plaayyyy”), and it kicked off a fantastic run for director Walter Hill, including 48 Hrs, Streets of Fire, Extreme Prejudice and even the recent Dead for a Dollar. However, the film was rife with issues, including a leading man being fired early in production and full-scale riots that erupted after the movie opened.
We examine all this in WTF Happened to The Warriors, which is edited by Juan Jiminez, and written and narrated by Dave Davis.
Can you dig it?

Nah, this is one of my favorite cult classics of all time. I'd be pissed if it were remade. You can't remake the vibe, the time period nor the authenticity of diversity. LEAVE IT ALONE!

@@wiseguy617 The whole thing was diversity plus in the book they're kids. Like 12-16 years old. Also in the book they're the Coney Island Destroyers, they wear straw hats with mercedes hood ornaments on them. Really easy to differentiate.

I was in Thomas Waites acting class in New York City for three years, and I can tell you firsthand he’s helped me grow not only as a performer, but as a person as well. He loves to tell stories about being on sets, he looks upon them fondly despite some unfortunate circumstances, he has a genuine love for the stage and screen. He admits that he made mistakes in his youth, some due to his struggles with alcohol, but his experiences have given him wisdom which he’s passed onto his students for three decades. He continues to be a mentor for me today, I’ve learned more from him than I did in 12 years of public school. I can not recommend his class enough. A great actor and an even greater human.

One of the best movies ever made. Simply an outstanding work of art. On the level of alien, aliens and blade runner. Everything from the cinematography, costumes, concept, action, acting, casting, and moody, depressing atmosphere. And especially the score of the soundtrack. Even the ambient background pop rock bands chosen to give the scenes the omnipresent realism and authentic feel of the time. It's an insurmountable piece that is for me a must watch every now and then. Seeing it in the right mood puts me on the edge of my seat like predator. Never disappoints. Absolute classic 👍

One of the best movies ever made. The locations, fight scenes, wardrobe, etc. It all came together with the realistic fine acting of a group of young actors that with their dedication, they put together a memorable project. They did their own stunts, some got injured but they pressed on even knowing that with real gangs out there they could be in danger. It's hard to imagine that there were so many issues and challenges that had to be overcome to make this movie. Because the finished product was so good and enjoyed tremendous success over the many years. I loved this movie, it seemed real enough and a couple of generations have become fans. I spent time in NYC in the early 90s, didn't have any issues while there at all. Had a great time.

An absolute classic! I always like to imagine The Warriors takes place in the same universe as A Clockwork Orange. The ads for The Warriors were quickly taken down off of NYC's public transportation because of the amount of complaints. Imagine you're on the subway at 2 am in New York City in the late 70s after a long day's work and you get paid cash so you've got your entire week's salary, then you look at a poster with a huge group of threatening gangmembers staring back at you with the tagline, "These are the Armies of the Night. They are 100,000 strong. They outnumber the cops five to one. They could run New York City." From what I've been told of New York City during the 70s, it wasn't just "The City That Never Sleeps," it was "The City That Never RELAXES."

Friends and I saw this at the theater in spring or early summer of '79 -- three times. I had no idea until this video that the movie had been pulled from theaters. It was an amazing cinematic experience considering the small budget. Although the effects were nothing special, the big screen gave this production an encompassing, diving into the world of the Warriors feel. There were four of us the first time -- then like 10, then a group of 20 or so. One of my all time favorite movies and experiences.

I saw this in the theater in Brooklyn, New York, in 1979. I've wanted to be a Warrior ever since!! This is my all-time favorite movie. I always hoped there would be a sequel.

I first seen the movie in the early eighties. At the time I hung out with quite a few other teenagers , all from broken homes . Watching this movie was mandatory if you were in a "gang" in the eighties. I think some part of me said this is what family is , those who choose to stand with you no matter what. The come out and play line will always give me goosbumps

I'm stoked that I got to see this when it first came out! I was in High School, on the baseball team and we were blown away by the reality it portrayed, with all the hidden confrontations and the masterfully coordinated violence...not going too far, but being ugly and aggressive enough to make us understand how these type of people existed. I wish the producers would've given more working cash to the directors!

D.P. Kelly came up with the iconic line from when he was a kid the neighborhood bully chased him home and stood in front of his house chanting “ come out and play “

It was an annoying neighbor of his as an adult. And it was the tone, not the line itself.

Yeah, this is one of those movies you just leave alone. It's just great AS IS. No updates needed. It just works. I do just remember the news about the gang action in the theaters. I saw it first on broadcast TV, and even there they were forced to add some shots of police cars ostensibly going to arrest the gangs at the end of the movie. So oddly enough I think I only just saw it entirely uncut when I found it just waiting for me on Amazon Prime Video! SUCH a great film!

I got into this movie in early eighties England on VHS.Loved it.Thought Id never visit NYC and never, ever ride the subway.Eventually moved to the eastern U S and have visited NYC over 100 times, riding the subway most visits. That first visit and especially that first subway ride brought the movie back to me in dramatic fashion...

I remember watching this film as a small kid, and that moment when David Patrick Kelly is taunting them to "come out and play" with those bottles...that stick in my mind... he is a musician and maybe that is how he got the idea to use those bottles, and his face is such, that scene has particular quality...

Trivia fact: The Main theme "In the the City" was written and sung by Joe Walsh, but the song was intended to be on a Eagles album. There was a console video game made of "The Warriors" as well. I never played it though.

This movie really does hold up having grown up in the nineties and the VHS era many obscure movies that lots of young people nowadays have never heard of and will probably never see or truly be able to feel the impact or experience the movie because of the outdated visuals anyways one of the best gang movies of all time to say the least iconic

This movie is awesome. Then and now. My dad gave me an old vest from his suits for work. Picture this! A huge fan of Dukes of Hazzard. I'm wearing my vest jumping home made ramps on my bike. I'm trying to sound like the General Lee. I did some weird stuff as a kid. But I had a blast.
