My Chinese grandparents can only sleep on these beds. They legit cannot sleep on mattresses. Traditional Chinese belief is that sleeping on hard surfaces is good for your back (keeps it straight) while soft mattresses make your back hunched. I am aware that western logic is the complete opposite.

Xia Zheng yeah, when I was a young kid back in China, I actually slept on a hard twin size bed with jade surface. It has been with my family for 8 generations. All kids have to use that bed until they are 18. Suppose to help us grow up with healthy spine. It was great in summer but kinf of cold in winter. Great memory.... Wish I could bring it to NY and let my daughter sleep on it.

Well western people are saying hard/firm beds are better for your back if you sleep on your back whereas hybrid soft/firm beds are good to sleep on your side. Soft beds (like memory foam) are not good to sleep in period and this is cited by western health orgs

wooden beds with either just a bamboo straw mat for cushion or else nothing is actually quite common in Viet Nam, although a lot of people have switched to mattresses to imitate the west. I think it's partially because of the heat, even during the rainy season, humidity and heat levels in Viet Nam tend to make you want to do everything in your power to keep anything insulating from sticking to your skin, and trapping sweat. Also depending on the wood used, it's actually pretty springy and not as uncomfortable as sleeping on the concrete floors of many city houses. Marble and Jade beds are lost on me though lol.

One thing you don't realize is that the entire time you are sleeping on a soft mattress, your body is working, it's always trying to balance itself. It's subtle and you don't realize how much work you are doing as you sleep until you have truly relaxed totally on a hard surface. Your body does not have to compensate on the ground, it just lets go into absolute relaxation. It tskes time to get there but it does actually happen.

Who has sex in a bed nowadays? Isn't that kind of old-school? Also, I'm from Romania, a part called Transylvania, and over here we all sleep in coffins. They are lined with padding and silk or velvet, so they are very comfortable. They are also pretty warm despite the dungeons (our sleeping quarters) being draughty. When I lived in Vietnam my bed was almost like this, but with a 4 in thick foam mattress on top, it was really strange definitely but I ended up actually loving it. My grandparents (Chinese) prefer those types of beds lol.. or at least they used to. Not sure about now.. Also, one of the main uses for it was in the summer. Before they had A/C, it'd be really hot at night. However, the mat was made out of bamboo and it didn't absorb heat, making it cool and cold.

This is the bed of my dreams. Seriously. After sleeping on beds with thick mattresses for 23 years, I realised I tended to gravitate towards the edges of mattresses. When I slept on mattresses on the floor, I would find myself on the edge of the mattress with part of my body on the floor. Weird, I know. Last year I realised I actually slept better on the floor. But my mom, who's Korean, insisted that the floor, which is marble, was cold in nature and therefore bad for the body. She argues that people in Korea can sleep on the floor because it's heated. Where I live, Singapore, the floor is never heated. So now I sleep on an ordinary wooden bed frame without a mattress. So, I COVET THAT BED. I don't know, maybe like Suzy I'm actually an old lady in the body of a 23-year old.

The super firm bed like that seems a little extreme but I kinda understand the draw as I sleep on a futon on my floor. I live in Alaska so its not exactly a popular style of bed (if they have a futon, usually people have it on a futon frame) but I love it! The firmness feels so nice to my back and its so nice to be able to fold up my bed and have such a versatile space. It took maybe a week or so for my back to get used to it but any other bed feels too soft now! FUTON FOR LIFE!

Funny thing. When I visited my aunt in Vietnam, I actually preferred sleeping on a giant, wooden table that doubled as a "couch" and kitchen table rather than the thin mattresses that were set up on the ground upstairs bc I would less likely be invaded by ants come morning. It was an experience.

This is mainly a camping/away from home thing, but I've slept plenty on thin yoga-mat type mattresses. They were there just to insulate you from the ground or floor which tends to be cold here in Finland. It is SO MUCH more comfortable on dirt or moss than a floor though.

I used to sleep on one of those beds that is similar to what you are showing in this video. It was a antique expensive wooden bed that they carved decorating details to the sides of it. My grandparents love that bed because in the summer time, when it's all hot and humid (I'm from Vietnam btw), it's really cool to sleep on this type of bed. It doesn't make you sweat at all! Although in the winter time, my grandpa did put a mattress on top of it cause the one we have doesn't have a heating system. And yes, i believe they still have it at home, we no longer sleep on it but it is now used as a sitting mattress for my grandma as she prays every morning. You get used to it and honestly, it didn't hurt my back at all (as a child. Lol).

beingWantable Ikea is good if you're on a budget, but the quality of some products went downhill over the years and its family-friendliness is just superficial. I've seen a video with Ingvar Kamprad and he's an unfriendly businessman. I also can't stand seeing the same pictures and sofas in every home. Be individual, buy your stuff somewhere else.
@beingWantable

You're right, but I am not saying that everyone should buy their stuff at IKEA because I also like individuality. However people still do, including me because it is cheap. Nothing more, nothing less. Also I don't care about the CEO of IKEA unless they get there stuff by having children work or treat their workers as slaves. Even though I probably would still do it because I'm (and everybody else too) a hypocrite. Your opinion is correct but I think it is slightly misplaced, don't say it here ;)"First" and "Sandstorm" comments will be flagged as spam

In Vietnam, my grandparents had these hard wood beds. They are very polished and shiny and has a cooling feel against your skin. When I was little, I absolutely loved this because the heat in Vietnamese Summer can get up to 41C so it was a nice cooling sensation against my back when I sleep at night. Also my grandparents were very against mattresses, especially for younger children because it doesn't help with your posture.

I have back problems, so I need to have a very firm mattress. Anything soft, I wake up in horrible pain. I have slept on the floor when my back really gets bad, so I would be interested in trying this. However, I wouldn't spend $1,000 for it. I would just sleep on the floor instead. I currently sleep on a mattress with a box spring. The mattress is ultra firm with very minimal give.

Squishy beds are horrible for your back. They literally cause bad back issues and spine getting distorted shape. Do yourself a favor and sleep on the floor with a light futon mattress. Or if you have the money to spare buy the stone bed. But firm platform is what you need if you have back problems. And you really can't sleep on hard platform except on your back.

When I went to my friend's house for a sleep over (in Winter), I thought her bed was going to swallow me...I was drowning under her thick quilt and soft mattress. I actually grew up with these back in Korea. My mother has a horrible back issues and the heating really helps her to relax. And when moving to Toronto, she managed to find an importer who brings these into Canada (Yes, the CANADALAND). To be fair, the Korean culture has a lot to do historically with sleeping on the ground. The floor was heated during the winter times and that acted as the heater for a lot of those traditional houses - this system still exists for a lot of old houses.

I spent a few weeks in South Korea last year and I LOVED the beds there! It was basically my ideal combination of extremely firm mattress with fluffy, fluffy bed spreads and pillows everywhere. The mattresses I slept on which seemed the norm in the various hostels and AirBnb's I used were so wonderfully firm. Perhaps not as hard as the one in this video and not heated but they had no squish or give at all. I think they were spring mattresses but they could have been something else, I'm not really sure. I injured my back/shoulder a couple years ago and the one thing that is absolutely 100% guaranteed to make it hurt again is sleeping on a bed that is too soft. Memory foam is the WORST and guaranteed to make my shoulder ache for days. The Korean beds were perfect! No shoulder pain at all after the first couple nights sleeping on those mattresses. I want to get a new mattress now that I'm settled again in the States and having a hard time finding one like the ones I slept on in Korea. But if anyone knows where I can find one (affordably) please let me know!

I visited my family in China, and interestingly enough, they also seem to prefer somewhat firmer sleeping support. I've never seen any of them sleep on the floor, but it's generally held that the harder the mattress, the "better" the bed. Since I'm a "spoiled" American citizen that prefers cushiony fluffy cloud beds, it took a long time to get used to, but I have to say, once I got used to it, I can see how it does have its benefits. It's definitely much more supportive, and when I wake up in the morning, I feel a lot more... aligned. It's hard to explain. >.< But long story short, China also seems to support the concept of a floor bed.

I lived in our Beijing apartment over the summer and the bed had a wooden frame with a very thin mattress (it was really just like two inches of padding), but I got used to the firmness so when I got home to the States and slept on my mattress, which is the most comfortable in the house, I almost died. It was like lying down on a marshmallow. I hated it for weeks before I got used to it again.

Everyone in my family over the age of 30 owns a marble bed. Sleepovers were the worst. But its pretty comfy after you cover them with 5 asian blankets. Particularly the ones with tigers or some kind of flower on them.

They actually have beds like these now available in Canada. Harder beds are actucally better for your back because it's flat and straight so it'll straighten out your back as well, mainly used by people who have bad backs. Soft matresses on the other hand molds with your body when you sleep so it doesn't provide the same support.

I have a pillow top mattress on a box spring. It's cushy and soft. That bed looks like my nightmare. I've slept on hard floors before and they hurt by hip so bad because I'm a side sleeper. I'd die sleeping on that thing. Also, if it gets cold, pile on a bunch of blankets and bury yourself in a warm cocoon like I do in the winter time. When it's really cold I have three comforters on my bed and just burrow under them like a rabbit. It's so warm and snugly.

We used to sleep on a Japanese futon on the floor, but after months of saving, we bought a Tempur-pedic and it's wonderful! It's a thick memory foam mattress with cooling gel in it, so you don't get very hot or sweaty (we live in a swamp-like climate). It sits on a solid foundation, which sits on a metal frame on the floor, pretty much like every American bed I've ever seen?

Soft mattresses make my entire body hurt, oddly. I live in the States, but occasionally travel to Bangladesh to visit family. They've got the hard platform-style beds as well, but generally cover them with a thin mattress pad (very dense cotton padding, no more than 1"-2" thick). They're so uncomfortable at first, but after a day or two, I find I get better sleep on that than I do my softer mattress at home. I'm forced to sleep on my back, because anything else hurts, but my back feels so good until I start sleeping on my own cushy bed! Plus, it's very cool in sticky, humid, hot summers.

In the Philippines we have these flat mats either made of dried bamboo leaves woven together to make the mat (traditional) or the one that's made of woven plastic material. They work opposite of those beds coz we need the flat mat against the cold floor or on top of a bamboo floor to make it comfy to sleep in a hot tropical night.

I'm Chinese and I actually grew up sleeping on a wooden slab with a thin padding on it. My parents eventually bought me a mattress, but it was still pretty hard. When I asked my parents why couldn't they buy me a softer mattress, they responded with "Sleeping on hard surfaces in good for your back and posture". I'm not sure if there's much truth or science behind this, but it would explain why even our family sofa is hard.

Simon is so annoying now as a you-tuber, all the time in these new videos all he does is complain about how Korea doesn't have the same types of preferences as the U.S. I mean seriously its a different country, of course the preferences are going to be different, and for one to ridicule those ideas or preferences it just shows how ignorant people can be. So if you don't believe me, are these comments really necessary? :41, 1:02, 2:18, 2:30.2:44 (although i know its a joke and is meant to be funny, mostly all these new videos are just Simon screaming things like; WHY!?) Martina is awesome though

Justin Yu Well, not everyone is going to like everything. Im sure he has a ton of things that are from Canada and the Unites States that he finds interestingly unusual like this as well. Just like any other person in the world. Clearly he has accepted the Korean culture and its totally okay that he and anyone else doesnt like or understand how certain things in the world make sense to some. Thats kinda how human beings are. It doesnt mean hes ignorant.

Justin Yu FYI, he's Canadian. I have never once heard him mention the U.S. in this video. so I don't understand where you got the idea that he compares korea to the U.S?! since he's from Canada it makes sense that he and other foreigner's are going to find some things different or strange. it's okay to find things different and strange as long as that person is not being rude about it. Simon wasn't being rude or ridiculing. he didn't insult Koreans or their culture. he's just talking about how hard and painful the bed is and making jokes about the bed. what is insulting about that? look around nobody is bothered by it but you. so the problem is you and not Simon. if you know he's just joking and trying to be funny then why does it bother you? it shouldn't. relax and have fun. don't take things too seriously.

Yes i did say he mentioned the U.S and I was wrong. Although my first comment was very crude I do have likes on it, so that does mean others feel the same. If you have a problem with me just saying how i feel about Simon, then you have the problem and should calm down. After all that's what the comment section is for. P.S: I un-subbed after the video, so you wont see my comments on any of their newer videos =)

Ok, so Eat Your Kimchi, I watch all your videos and have been following you for a while as a fellow Canadian and one thing I've noticed has been really prevalent in the last little while of your videos. Simon, you interrupt Martina A LOT. You need to slow your roll. It's rude and you're not respecting Martina and her opinions. You basically dominated this video and a lot of people would like to actually hear Martina's side of things. You also talk over her when she's finishing her thought. She'll be finishing up what she's saying and you'll barrel in with what you want to say. I'm sure you're not doing it maliciously and you guys make a great couple, but it's really starting to wear on the videos for me personally. I'm not even 100% sure you will see this, but I wanted to say that. Thanks!
