Guys, as I explain in the video I was raking fast ON PURPOSE to have a TEDDING effect. Even raking very slow this still leaves lots of hay on the field and broken tines. The tines break because the rake was mangled by a previous owner and is no longer square on the frame, so any bump causes the teeth to jump and catch a bar (and break off).

That isn't what that rake is for. If you were on a tractor you would have been able to easily roll the wet on top without it blowing and wrapping up. Just something to think about.

@@This1LifeWeLive it leaves hay because it's not set right. I'm talking about being able to roll the hay on the ground not flipping it into to the air. Sometimes the job gets done faster by going slower.

Used bar rakes for years. Maybe replaced a dozen tines. Never pulled with a truck, used a tractor, kept speed down. Any older tractor that runs good can be very useful around your farm. Pull bale tubs, rake hay, a lot of smaller easy jobs. And, our old rake was a JD, but several years older.

My yorky took years to get used to riding in a car, summer was easiest, as I would turn the AC on her and that worked great...well almost great, than the wife asked me why I ran the AC for the dog but she had to argue with me to roll the windows up and turn on the AC. Two things, slow down with the bar rake. At the speed you were going you are doing damage to the rake as well as beating the leaves off the crop. The idea of those is to gently turn the crop over and windrow it, not act like a tedder and beat the crop up. The other is that it looks like you have it set too low. You want the teeth to almost touch the ground to miss less hay but not actually touch. When they touch it tends to rip the rubber and you lose teeth. Power wise a nice small tractor around 20-25 hp would pull that rake all day with no issues.
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive 3 жыл бұрын
The teeth I showed to be 4in off the ground, so if anything it was set too high. the rubber teeth were getting knocked off because it's very mangled and not straight frame-wise, so the slightest bump causes the teeth to hit the bars. Yes I was for sure going too fast, but that was the idea was to use it like a teddar ;)

I have been running bar rakes for 50 years. New Idea, New Holland with front wheel, then back to New Holland without the front wheel. In dry alfalfa you just don't need the wheel running in the hay knocking off leaves. Not a fan of the rubber mounted teeth. Typically don't like to chop behind the rake, you run the risk of picking up rocks rolled into the windrow, and a broken off rake tine would be very bad, both on the chopper, and you sure don't want metal in the feed! On the last New Holland rake when it was new, we had it set up with 3 tines per set. 2 on normally, one on backwards. It really did a nice job, but there was no room for error. If the extra tooth got bent out of position at all, it would be hitting something in the basket. So over the years most of them have been taken off. Still does a nice job in most conditions. Never owned a wheel rake, always felt they put too much dirt into the hay. I often rake pretty fast, generally a high gear with the engine throttled waaay back. Have raked with the truck in a pinch, but didn't feel right, and you can't turn short enough.
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think I like the front wheel either, makes a pain to back up and put away (crazy heavy too). I've also opted to put some on backwards, and some slots could fit 3 but some only 1.

Double rotor is a best rake because they Pula a hay and not roll the hay make it like power poles to Bale
@grassylakefarm890
@grassylakefarm890 3 жыл бұрын
I use a rotary rake. It does a beautiful job. It fluffs the crop so air can get at it to dry. One problem with the side rake is that it rolls crop up like twine. Thus it doesn't allow the air to get at it to dry the crop down. The issue with the v-rake is that it is ground driven. Which then picks up too much debris or ash and doesn't produce a clean crop. A rotary rake is the way to go.

I've heard lots of guys love their rotary rakes. WE considered getting one, but they are FAR more expensive out here, and the New Holland dealer said they work great with thick crops like straw or alfalfa, but not so much for thin hay crops :( Hence why we bought the wheel rake

That's a fantastic way to burn your car and hatfield to the ground, I had a friend who done this in a pickup truck got hay wrapped around the drive shaft and got next to the catiletic converter and burned truck, rake, bailer tractor and field up!!! There is a reason why you use tractors in the field, keep learning

The tedder will work better than that rake . Run the tedder at low pto speed ,will not throw hay ever where and run the tractor at what speed you want by running in higher gear. Thank you for your videos. Are you still happily married hope very thing is fine.

Hay looks nice! I think them single wakes are nice only in prefect square fields, and waking really thick hay for single rows which that's why it calls a single wake..lol but for bubbling we hate it at least I do, always messing up your outside winows.. but what's nice about them single wakes, you can flip it upside down to dry to perfectly where the V wake at least that's what we call them, inerways they literally rotat the hay, back in to it's button side, so the it doesn't have a good chance to dry out unless you don't have a good enough breeze😉. Cute little doggy😍no she wasn't happy, she's like LET ME OUT OR I'LL THRWPU ALL OVER you NOW moma..Lol but she's cute. And it was hard to make out, if your kid a boy or girl with that much hair on his head..lmao 😂 other than that good video.

I don't understand why you are losing so many tines on your bar rake. My dad used one for 20+ years and I don't remember ever losing one. The main danger is that one could puncture a tractor tire, which would ruin your whole day.
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive 3 жыл бұрын
part of the issue is that it's not straight. previous owner at some point "ran it over" so the frame is pretty bent up. I tried fixing it a few years ago, but no luck. every bump causes the tines to whack the cross bars.
