This film depicts the early exploits of the founder of Tai Chi, Chang Zhang Fong. The story starts with Chang staying at the Shaolin temple and stumbling upon the secret manuscripts that lead to his expertise in the Crane and Snake styles of kung fu. When the local baron, To Ka-Kan (Cliff Ching Ching) passes through a town and is nearly assassinated, he employs a disgraced monk (Tin Ming) with an axe to grind to root out the offenders. A bevy of swordsmen and thugs clash in a series of battles that lead to a thoroughly intriguing plot

Every Kung Fu Movie "Polly" has played in, they are all among the best, she does not play in second rate martial arts flicks...She is a Legend right up there with "Angela Mao" and "Chia Ling"

Totally agree. Polly Shang is a legend. There's an extra scene in this upload featuring Polly Shang when she kills some henchmen which I've never seen before. I'm guessing it was cut from the official version. Thanks, Wu Tang Collection for the upload plus this bonus scene.

In adding with description: After Shaolin scene, starts off with an excellent sword fight. "Na Lung" (Champ) and (Sze) join together is a restaurant fight, then (Polly) joins in. Chang Zhang Fong murders a guard and they are after him. "Tow Kar Kan" is the head of the villains after Chang. At Shaolin Chang goes thru a tunnel of obstacles. (Somewhat like Carter Wong has). An Chin is Tow's son and the wild card. Chang escapes Brother Lee and big fight. Tow is a big handful for fighting at the end with the crew eventually showing up to deal with him. PS: Very nice bonus was (Tien Feng) restaurant owner & (Polly's) father, his wife shows up for the fighting at one point. Takes you by surprise ! Film quality is great too.

The way they film these movies have to be studied, and valued; some very interesting shots/angles/lighting/colors/zoom in, zoom out, freeze frames, etc.. the set designs are always phenomenal, everything is just designed so well.. but, it always has this grindhouse/spaghetti western type of tone.. which I’m certain those genres came about due to one legendary director that made Samurai 7. Fascinating film makers that rarely get talked about.

I met Polly Kwan in 1988 . Carter Wong ,my Sifu introduced me. Polly regards Carter Wong as Brother. They have been in many many Hong kong features together. Very nice ,and incredible Female martial artist.

As much as I have respect for the classics, some or a certain percentage still have to be scrutinized for their value as an action film with political plots and revenge plots. Most of the 70s and 80s wu xia pian (sword fight films) and kung fu flicks fall in this category so there isn't much to go around with regards to the story unless they apply twists and sub-plots. (Shaw Brothers have been adept and excellent at this having very good and creative writers at their employ). But really, the same formula goes on and the gist of every film in this category would simply be following the same line of heroes defeating the villains. So now it''s left to the action part or the action choreography to make things interesting. If this aspect fails (and believe me, many DO FAIL), then the film decreases in value, no matter how many action A-listers or stellar actors they employ. But I digress. Question: why do the protagonists use their blades (if ever at all) so late in the fight and only after they've sustained injuries inflicted by their opponents WITH BLADES? Wouldn't logic dictate to use your weapon immediately to defend yourself against getting wounded by the enemy? And wouldn't you use the very weapon your enemy uses after you disarm him, to gain advantage and win? Somehow this logic isn't in this film.

I have noticed that most of the movies I've watched in the past (and I've watched so many since the 80s, so much that I might just be repeat-watching some of them) coming from the era of Polly Shang Kwan's popularity, I feel that the fight choreographies range from lackluster to just plain mediocre. This film comes up with a super villain who's got a magic hand that can instantly fatally injure his opponents and the fights seem really intense, but very unconvincing. Only a child with no understanding how kung fu technics/styles work would buy it. Sure these were great when they first came out due to the shock value of the fights but I've seen much better and nearly more realistic ones. Besides, if we treat the choreographies as more of an art employing logic and some science and symmetrical beauty, this particular movie (and others like it) fail the grade for being just a hype in terms of brawl type fist fights with a lot of vaulting/jumping up in the air. I've seen this film back when it was shown in the 80s and I was unimpressed even with the lackluster theatrical defeat and death of the villain. Furthermore, the only Shang Kwan film memorable to me is the classic and iconic "Dragon Inn", and even then the fight scenes/choreos lacked the theatrical and cinematic appeal of a Tsui Hark touch. With that said, even for entertainment I fail to get it from this movie.

2:25 Man is sparring with himself, foley (sound effects) is adding a sound for the fellow because he is wearing a loose fitting shirt. Our fellow is not wearing any kind of shirt. This point is a clear indication of poor production design. I won’t be watching this film. 6:04 A flutist plays music. Then he want to help clean the library. At this point he is not playing the flute, but carrying it in one hand. But the flute music continues anyway. Another reason to skip this movie. 11:07 4 men reach the top of a building, in order to join battle with their leader. This is done by falling down from the roof, and the editor reversing the film. And it is obvious. Another reason to ignore this film.
