There is criminal and civil. This is a civil not criminal. Thus, you can be found not guilty in criminal court and found liable in civil court. The video was the entire case. Apparently, the jury saw it as a money-grabbing machination. The cops were quite incompetent so it could be argued that his complete lack of compliance helped expose their training deficiencies. A thank you probably would have sufficed but, for some reason, the jury decided to toss him a few grand for his trouble
